Interviews
Lois Robbins – Younger
By: Taylor Gates
Q) What are the recent projects you have been working on?
A) in the last year I have done four movies: One Nation Under God, The Aspern Papers, Shepherd and Kingfish. I wrote the play L.O.V.E.R., which I did up at The Schoolhouse Theater last spring and then had the world premier here in Los Angeles. Of course, life is what happens when you’re making other plans so…as luck would have it, I booked the recurring role on “Younger” when I got out here and have been flying back and forth to New York weekly for twenty-four hours at a time to film it!
Q) What was the audition process like for “Younger?”
A) I auditioned on camera in my agent’s office because I was shooting another film that day and had very limited time! Fortunately, since I had auditioned for the show twice before, they knew me and finally agreed to cast me!! Yay!
Q) Were you already a fan of the show?
A) Yes! I had been binge watching it for about two months prior to booking it!
Q) What was it like joining the cast in the show’s fifth season?
A) Everyone has been so welcoming! The cast is amazing and it’s a wonderful supportive environment. Kudos to the crew as well! They are awesome!
Q) What can you tell us about your character Penelope?
A) Penelope and her husband Luca are described as being like Stephanie Seymour and Peter Brandt. My clothes are fabulous!!
Q) Your character shows an interest in Maggie’s work. What was it like to work with Debi Mazar?
A) I love Debi Mazar. First of all, it’s hard to take your eyes off her. She is incredibly beautiful-inside and out. A total pro.
Q) Your character is an art collector. Did you do any research about the profession or about art in general to prepare?
A) I myself am a collector and a New Yorker so my preparation was to learn my lines and live truthfully in the moment.
Q) What were some of your most memorable moments from filming “Younger?”
A) Most memorable moments of working on “Younger” has to be when Darren Starr was on set and had me add things spontaneously to the scene we were working on. That was really fun!
Q) You’re very involved in the theatre community and are currently starring in your own one-woman show. Can you talk a little bit about what L.O.V.E.R is about and how it came to be?
A) L.O.V.E.R. is an adult woman’s coming of age story. As she recounts her sexual history from childhood to adulthood, she ultimately discovers that the most important relationship she has is the one she has with herself. It has been an extraordinary journey for me from that first draft to where we are now. I think it’s been empowering for me as a person as well as an actor. It’s given me the courage to finally be my authentic self-no holds barred.
Q) You also wrote the script for L.O.V.E.R. Would you ever want to branch out and try directing or producing as well?
A) I would never say never to anything. Life is about challenges and being open to new experiences. Directing and producing…I say..bring it on!!
Q) What do you feel are the differences between performing onstage and in front of a camera? Which do you prefer?
A) Ultimately, I just love working, creating. Stage is thrilling because you have the audience right there with you. It’s energizing in a whole different way. TV and film have their own rewards and challenges. The hours are far longer and you have to keep your energy going for very long periods of time. Having said that, I love being on set and the intimacy of the camera. Work-that’s what I love!
