Mahkenna – One More Time

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I find this question amusing because I go to a music school and everyone’s like, “Oh, my sound is like Rihanna and Bruno Mars had a baby, but it was a dude.” But I don’t explain it that way. I make EDM music as of now, but I think what makes my music different in a way is the tone in my voice. I would like to think I have a different kind of voice, and by majority of what people have told me, I believe I carry some unique tone in my voice.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) My top three influences are Ariana Grande, Blackbear and Billie Eilish. Each of these artists are incredibly unique and I listen to them on a daily basis. They have inspired me to be a true artist and work for YOUR craft, don’t let anyone change you because it’s YOUR art.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “One More Time.”

A) “One More Time” is my latest single. How it came about is my writer, Alicia Madison, had lost someone she loved very much and spilled her loss into the lyrics. Although the song sounds like a break-up song, it has a deeper meaning.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) It can be interpreted many ways. In pop culture songs, a writer has to make their songs applicable to all different types of people’s lives.

Q) Will there be a video coming soon to accompany the track?

A) As for “One More Time” I don’t believe there will be a video. But on my next single in January, yes, there will be!

Q) What is your song writing process?Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) You have to be prepared for both. But I like writing lyrics without any composition for fun. I find myself doing that more than writing to tracks.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) Lately a lot more! Thank you, Jared Lee Gosselin! I finally get input of my tracks and Jared truly listens to me and believes in my music. I have worked with him a lot in the past, but kind of stopped working together when I started doing EDM. I wanted to switch it up and maybe do something still in EDM, but a little less progressive, but nobody was listening to me and then I talked with Jared and I’m releasing a song in January that I’m super proud of.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Mahkenna performance?

A) I’ve been DJing a lot lately. So, probably some heavy drops and jumping in the crowd with me behind my board.

Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming soon?

A) I hope so. I’ve been working on some new things and I want to get the presses started. It’s a dream of mine so I’ll make it come to life if it’s the last thing I do. [laughs]

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) I don’t have a favorite place to perform. I guess what matters to me is the vibe of the crowd, that what completes my performance.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) I would want to collaborate with Billie Eilish because she is just so honest and talented. Her mom and brother are apparently musical geniuses, so I think it would be really fun. The other artist would be Blackbear. I’ve listened to his music almost every day for like two years now. I think his lyrics are so unique and the tracks are just so interesting, each one of his songs are so different from the other, but Blackbear’s voice is so original, it puts them all together like, “Oh yeah, that’s Blackbear. Duh.”

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Logic’s newest album just released, and my boyfriend has had it on repeat and I just got more of an appreciation for his work from that album alone. I had no idea what his story was and his life, his story, his raw talent is in that album and it’s crazy.

Q) You are part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) Because sometimes it’s the only place I can, I try my best to get real honest content with still getting high quality pictures. Lately I have been DM-ing every day in the mornings and before I go to bed just talking with them.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Thank you, I really do appreciate all your support and the fact you’re supporting me now is crazy because we got some really good stuff ahead of us, don’t you worry!
