Q) How would you best describe your sound?

A) I would say it’s kind of a bit of soul, little bit of psychedelia, sprinkles of lots of different things, all mixed into a nice hot soup.

Q) Who are your Top 3 musical influences?

Thom Yorke – He constantly is pushing the boundaries of music, and I just think he’s a genius.

D’Angelo – He would have to be my favorite vocalist of all time. Even just Voodoo itself was a faultless album and I still listen to it quite frequently.

Dirty Art Club – Incredible sound designer, sampler, beatmaker. I love every record he’s put out. I draw a lot of inspiration in how I want to produce from the way he mixes and how complex and in-depth his soundscape work is.

Q) Tell us the story behind your current single “Reelin’.”

A) “Reelin’” was made quite quickly one morning in the studio. It just felt easy from start to finish, the music wasn’t super labor intensive. It’s about the dichotomy of being in a relationship and feeling those high highs and low lows of being with someone.

Q) What message do you hope listeners will take away from listening to “Reelin’?”

A) Hopefully a song they can listen to again. That it feels good in their heart and soul.

Q) Your album Everything’s Fine was recorded at Rainbow Valley Studios, which you founded. How has having complete creative control from the mic to the mixing board helped you gain better understanding about the music industry?

A) There’s a huge difference between understanding sound engineering, production and songwriting and the music industry. And I am lucky to be in the position to have a deep understanding of both worlds and bring them together.

Q) Which song was your favorite to write and record for Everything’s Fine and why?

A) Honestly, it’s too hard to choose. It was pretty rapid-fire making song to the next. It’s quite hard to even remember the creation of each one individually.

Q) What track(s) did you find challenging to create – whether emotionally, recording or listening back to it?

A) “For Real” was the most challenging. I wrote it specifically about a close friend of mine, and I was scared to show him the song. It was really weighing over me when we finished it until I actually showed him.

Q) In addition to a new album, you are also set for some North American tour dates in October. Which city are you most looking forward to visiting during your tour?

A) I am excited to go to Nashville because I actually haven’t been there, and I’ve heard great things.

Q) What song(s) is your favorite to perform live?

A) Probably “For Real” or “Reruns” from Everything’s Fine. They don’t feel labor intensive, just feels like it happens.

Q) Back in 2007 you were the runner-up on Australian Idol. Since your time on Idol, what was the best advice you were given that has helped you with your music career?

A) The best advice was go and do it yourself.

Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters of your music?

A) I guess just thank you for taking time out of your life to explore things that I’ve attempted to make for you all. I don’t take it for granted. If the music has touched you in some way, that’s success to me, and it’s very fulfilling and humbling.
