Q) You got to direct in this first part of the season.

Melanie: It was very intimidating. You’re the first person to ask me that. It was very intimidating, not so much because of the directing since our director really trusted me. It was more about it being the first episode and we had the rest of the season to shoot. So, if I lose the respect of the crew…I’m in a lot of trouble. So, that was the pressure. I remember on the day it was maybe the last scene of the day. We were running behind so it was a stressball. I got to direct later in the season. People trusted me at this point. “Oh, you didn’t screw it up the first time.” So, then it was a lot more fun. For the first episode it was like…[heavy breathing]

Q) Now that you’re a new mom, both on screen and off, what does that mean for Wynonna?

Melanie: I think for both of us I think we got right back into the saddle of things (literally for Wynonna). I know for me and Wynonna it was and is really important to stay busy because when we stay busy we can’t think too much. And Wynonna really was in a lot of pain last season and in such a dark place. Her way of avoiding it or dealing with it is to work. It keeps her mind busy and focused and that’s a lot like me. It was tough. I have two kids, actually. So, being away from them and shooting there was a lot of guilt, but at the same time I know what I’m doing is really important. Maybe not as important as what Wynonna is doing…[laughs] But it’s so important and in a way it’s a gift. So, I think we both used our work in the same way.

Q) Talk about what is in store on the romance front.

Melanie: Bella, our director, has a great way of talking about Wynonna’s relationships. When Wynonna is at work she’s like a soldier fighting in a war where there is always so much pressure and the stakes are so high. It’s that moment of connection between two people that just needs that moment of relief. So, I think for Wynonna these two men are a moment of relief. They are both so important to her for different reason. Dolls (Shamier Anderson) is like the guiding like and aspirational and who she aspires to be good enough for. Doc (Tim Rozon) is just as fucked up as her so it gives her a sense of solace and a sense of “I’m good enough for you because you’re just fucked.” So, I don’t want to make her choose.

Q) Can you tease a little bit about her relationship with her mom and how becoming a mom has changed that relationship?

Melanie: Well, what is the most interesting thing we’ve seen is that Wynonna Feels like she was left by her mother when she needed her. Wynonna has her daughter and so now it’s like I wonder if she realizes yet that she just did the same thing her mother did. For different reasons of course, but it will be interesting to explore that. Two flawed women who gave up their child – what does it look like when they interact? Is there forgiveness? Is there understanding?

Q) Is them working together against Bulshar going to bring them closer?

Melanie: Possibly. I think it will bring everybody closer together. But Mama Earp (Megan Follows) is very much an Earp.
