Interviews
Mia Grace – Stuck
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would describe my sound as being a fusion of my upbringing. [laughs] When my album drops, I’m excited for people to hear how I combine different elements of different genres. On the album there’s definitely pop and R&B at the forefront but also flares of hip-hop, afrobeat, Latin music.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Minnie Riperton and Aaliyah influence lots of things in my life creatively. I even think about their styles when I get dressed. Michael Jackson is also a huge musical influence of mine as well as Brandy. I love the way they layer harmonies and add rhythm to when they sing. Their vocals are always dynamic.
Q) Growing up the daughter of famed musicians, what advice did they offer before entering the music industry yourself?
A) I think the best advice they gave me was actually unsaid. Just observing the way that they handle themselves and stand by their opinions, I respect and admire them so much. They always made me proud to be myself and whatever that meant at the time. I think musicians especially need to embrace this. It’s ok to change your mind or do something different. That’s how you evolve.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Stuck.”
A) I’m so happy about “Stuck.” I wrote it because I have a fascination with the moon and stars. I just wanted to sing about it in a song. “Stuck” is a subdued moody love song that’s a fun play upon words and emotions.
Q) What do you hope viewers take away from this song?
A) There’s nothing wrong with being “Stuck.” There’s certainty in being uncertain and it’s a beautiful thing. Honestly, I just want people to get good vibes from it. “Stuck” is a huge play on words with multiple meanings.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The video isn’t out yet, but it’s a performance. That’s all I can say for now.
Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) My process varies. Sometimes I just hear things in my head then I find or create the track with another producer. Sometimes I play the piano and find melodies id like to sing or a track starts to form in my head. Other times I listen to the music and come up with lyrics.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) A lot. I like switching up the arrangements and adding or taking away elements.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Yes, a second single will be coming out soon before the album drops.
Q) You’re still in college and have a booming music career! How do you balance the two?
A) I’m just honest with myself. When I wake up, I think of everything I have to do and just start knocking things off my list. Part of my daily routine is that I can’t move on until the previous task is completed. This keeps me motivated and in check lol.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I don’t have an answer for this yet. I just love to sing and I haven’t performed in a long time. This is my first single and I’m looking forward to when the time comes that I’ll get to perform it live.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Phony Ppl! They are an amazing band. They perform live, amazingly! I love their style and sound.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Since I already mentioned Phony Ppl, I’ll have to say Ugh, Those Feels Again by Snoh Aalegra. I love this album. I won’t skip not one song.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I think it’s a fun way to connect with anyone really. But social media is really cool. I can connect with people who listen to my music and hear their feedback. People who listen to my music can talk to each other. There are just so many ways people connect online.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thanks so much!
