Michelle Mylett – The Complex: Lockdown
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) Please tell us the premise for The Complex: Lockdown.
A) The Complex: Lockdown is about a woman named Amy Tennant who has developed a technology that could change the way we treat injuries especially in those with limited access to hospitals and doctors. Unfortunately, it gets into the wrong hands and is being used in the evilest way imaginable. The movie follows Amy and her estranged boyfriend/partner Rees (Al Weaver) as they are forced to work together to figure out how her technology was taken, who stole it and how they can stop it from creating further harm.
Q) What made you want to be a part of this film?
A) I was very intrigued by the choose your own adventure element of this film as it’s such a new format. I had recently watched the episode in the series “Black Mirror,” Bandersnatch and found the experience really immersive and so fun but that was basically my only point of reference. After reading the script and speaking with our director Paul Raschid, we really vibed on who Amy Tennant was and I was so impressed with his clarity and passion…I knew we were all in beyond capable hands and I was excited to be part of it!
Q) How was your role as Dr. Amy Tennant originally described to you?
A) She’s serious. She has a mission and she is dead set on seeing it through. She’s so accomplished at such a young age and is questioned often by people older than her. She has to work hard to be taken seriously which is something I know a lot of people, especially women, can relate with.
Q) Was there anything you added to this character that wasn’t in her initial breakdown?
A) I mean, I definitely wanted to show the sides of her that weren’t just the super cool brilliant doctor lady. [laughs] She’s just a human being like everyone else…uncomfortable in her own skin from time to time. I wanted her to have moments where you see how socially awkward she can be. She’s not great at jokes. [laughs] She gets flustered sometimes, etc… I added a touch of awkward to her which was fun to play opposite Al Weaver who did such an incredible job playing the oh so charismatic and confident Rees.
Q) Dr. Tennant is facing quite the moral dilemma here. Outside of her own life, what are some concerns she’s focused on?
A) Her number one concern is stopping her technology from being used for evil.
Q) How familiar were you with your costars before working with them on this movie?
A) I had never met any of them personally before the rehearsal. I’m a huge “Game of Thrones” fan so hearing Kate Dickie was playing Nathalie Kensington was so exciting and thank god she’s hilarious and kind and so talented in person as well as on camera! Everyone was an absolute delight to work with.
Q) What advice did director Paul Raschid offer that you took to heart?
A) Keep hydrated, have fun, and don’t be afraid to ask questions because this script is very confusing!
Q) What were some of your favorite scenes to film?
A) Crawling through the air vent was a highlight.
Q) With such a heightened storyline and intensity to each scene, how did you shake off a long day of filming?
A) A hot shower and sometimes a glass of red wine! I’m from Canada and I was introduced to onion and cheese sandwiches, which I have to say…I probably ate one almost daily? They’re bomb.
Q) What do you think it is about The Complex: Lockdown that will make it a fast fan favorite thriller?
A) I think it’s a fun, fast moving sci fi thriller with an eerily timely plot considering everything that’s happening in our world at the moment.
Q) You are a part of social media. Are you looking forward to the fan response you’ll be receiving to the movie?
A) Already people have reached out to say how much they enjoyed watching/playing The Complex, which is so nice! It always means the world to hear positive feedback about your work, but it hits differently in 2020. Everyone’s feeling much more isolated than normal so to hear that something you’re part of gives someone else joy…a break, a laugh…whatever it may be, is a wonderful feeling.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and your work?
A) I guess I would just say thank you to anyone who has EVER taken some time to say something nice about my work to me on social media or in person. It reminds me how lovely humans can be and we all need to be reminded of that from time to time. [smiles]
