Interviews
Mike Taveira – Karma
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My sound has been changing recently, but the new vibe that is coming is confessional new-wave funk fantasy.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Recently a lot of 80’s new-wave sounds have been influencing me a ton.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Karma.”
A) “Karma” is the breakup anthem for anyone who feels like their ex has yet received the karma they deserve. It’s for those of us who have been left broken and questioning the entire relationship, only for our ex-partner to seemingly move along in the world with no trouble.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) All of us have been heartbroken one way or another and lots of times it is out of our control and not our fault.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The dodgeballs represent the feeling you get to constantly receive karma on your end.
Q) How did you come to pair up with Lemon for the video?
A) I showed Lemon the demo one day while we were hanging out. We went to a coffee shop (pre-COVID!) to discuss a concept for the video and came up with it!
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) No, I sometimes will randomly wake up in the middle of the night with a melody stuck in my head and sing to my voice memos. It’s very random for me but having a beat can always help as well. But I could also just have myself and my notes app/voice recordings and I can write a song.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) A lot. I like to make sure I can get the full potential of the song and sounds that I’m feeling when I’m hearing the track.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Possibly an EP.
Q) With concerts currently on hold, what do you miss most about performing live?
A) I still never got the opportunity to perform my music live, so I’m really hoping to be able to do that in the near future when COVID has passed.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) There are so many artists I’d like to collaborate with. Currently Tinashe would be someone I’d love to have on a track.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Ctrl by Sza is something I listen to daily.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s a place I can share my journey with the people that care about the music I write and that’s the best part about social media.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I’m so grateful that you even listened to my music and cared enough to share my work with others. You continue to support me and I’m forever thankful for that. Thank you for being here early.
