Murder Mystery
By: Michael Sun Lee
Netflix’s film Murder Mystery is a “whodunnit” tale starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston reminiscent of an Agatha Christie story. An exotic European location, kooky characters, and of course murder make this movie so fun to watch! In fact, this movie is more like a “who-fun-nit” because Sandler, Aniston and cast really bring the funny on this one.
Sandler and Aniston play working-class New York City couple Nick and Audrey Spitz, who while on their way to a long-awaited European vacation, get invited on a yacht by the wealthy, dashing and debonair Charles Cavendish played by Luke Evans. While on the yacht, Cavendish’s rich uncle dies (Terrence Stamp) minutes before getting married. The juxtaposition is obvious and the Spitz’s are right in the middle of it.
While the local police investigate the Spitz’ get stuck in France and become the prime suspects, but they determined to solve the mystery on their own. Their vacation becomes an “investication” if you will. Sandler and Aniston are terrific together as they encounter strange characters and dangerous situations. They are foreigners in foreign land trying to make sense of what has happened to them and boy is it hilarious.
The beautiful backdrop of Italy and supporting cast in this movie provide a very entertaining ride. Kyle Newacheck’s directing and James Vanderbilt’s writing is on point as they allow the chemistry of the characters to effervesce like expensive champagne. Gemma Atherton, Adeel Akhtar, Shioli Kutsuna, Luis Gerardo Mendez, Dany Boon, John Kani and Victor Turpin round off the cast.
Who lives and who dies? Well, then you must watch “Murder Mystery” on Netflix to see Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston back on screen together again for a very fun and entertaining time!
