Nashville – (Now and Then There’s) a Fool Such as I

Last week on “Nashville” the James/Conrad/Claybourne family had taken in a homeless girl from the streets that Daphne (Maisy Stella) befriended one day when she skipped school. Zach (Cameron Scoggins) fired Bucky (David Alford) and Deacon (Charles Estin) was not happy about it. Maddie (Lennon Stella) got the first single from her new album ready to release with the help of Juliette (Hayden Panettiere), who took the stage for the first time since the plane crash. Scarlett (Clare Bowen) told Damien (Christian Coulson) that she’s carrying his child and he couldn’t have taken the news worse. Gunnar (Sam Palladio) still doesn’t know where the baby news leaves his relationship with Scarlett and with Damien back in the picture she’s not being very forthcoming with information.

This week Juliette is obsessed with being out on top again. She wants number one songs again. Since her gospel album was a total flop she needs to start writing songs and having songs given to her that will be number one singles. At Gunnar’s home Damien stops by to tell him and Scarlett that he’s so excited to co-parent with them. Say what? Who said anything about co-parenting? Damien tells them that he loves them both. Is he high? Or maybe drunk?

Bucky is at Highway 65 packing up his office when he answers the phone. The Bluebird is calling and is wanting to know if Deacon wants to play Writers in the Round the following night. Deacon isn’t sure if he should. He hasn’t picked up the guitar since Rayna (Connie Britton) passed. Bucky tells Deacon that Rayna would want him to do it and Deacon tells Bucky that he’s right so he agrees to go. Deacon tells Bucky that he’s so sorry about the way things turned out at Highway 65 and thanks him for everything he’s done for them.

Maddie is nervous that no one is going to play her new single. Clay (Joseph David-Jones) suggests that she sing the song she’s been working on and she asks him to sing it with her. Maddie’s phone starts going off with text message alerts from Daphne and when they go unanswered, Daphne finally calls. She’s calling to tell Maddie to turn on the radio. Maddie’s new single is playing on the radio!

Scarlett is knitting a blanket and Gunnar asks her how he fits into everything. She tells him that she doesn’t know. Scarlett tells Gunnar that it’s not about any of them, it’s about the baby. Gunnar tells her that figuring out what she wants would take a team of shrinks and mind readers. Ouch! Scarlett tells him he’s not wrong about that. Scarlett, you’re lucky that Gunnar is still there since you’re pregnant by another dude.

Juliette is not getting any good music coming in for her to record. Then, Glen (Ed Amatrudo) shares that she was bumped from Kimmel. She’s furious about that. Glen tells her at least she can get started writing right away. Juliette says that the door is slamming on her career. She asks about Travis Stroud (Stacey Hinnen). They’ve written together before so she’s hoping that they can write together again.

Maddie does a radio interview. She thinks it’s supposed to be about her, but the host interviewing her only wants to talk about her mom. He wants to know how she feels trying to fill her mom’s boots. At home, Deacon is getting ready to go to The Bluebird and Daphne and Liv (Odessa Aldon) have clown makeup on. Deacon tells them they have to get ready to go, but Daphne tells him they don’t want to join him. He reluctantly agrees to let them stay home without a babysitter.

Deacon really enjoys playing again. They introduce a new singer, Jessie Caine (Kaitlin Doubleday). Her voice is gorgeous. She knew Rayna and Deacon back in the day, but has been gone from Nashville for a while. On the way home from the interview Maddie and Clay are pulled over. Clay is a black male in a white neighborhood being stopped by white cops. He does everything right, lets them know what he is doing at every turn.

Maddie begins filming and asking questions. They ask Clay to step out of the car and Maddie keeps persisting. Clay exits the car like he was asked to do so, but so does Maddie. Since Maddie did not get back in the car like she was asked to do so she was arrested for failing to follow the officer’s instructions. Clay was also arrested, yet we’re still unsure what he did wrong. Maddie has to call Deacon to tell him that they are heading to jail.

Deacon picks up both Maddie and Clay from the police station. Neither Maddie or Clay was charged. Even Clay seems to be upset with Maddie when she says she was just standing up for their rights. While we can see why she did what she did, Clay has a point. If she had just stayed quiet, the situation may not have escalated the way it did. Clay was being polite and following directions. It may have gone a totally different direction.

Juliette goes to meet with Travis and instead of something for her he gives her a song for Maddie. Damien takes Gunnar and Scarlett to see a house that he’s put an offer on. He wants them all to live together in order to co-parent. He also wants to name the baby Rupert. Rupert? Poor child. Gunnar is totally freaking out and now talking in an English accent.

Deacon reminds Daphne that Liv can’t stay with them forever and Daphne gets defensive immediately. Deacon tells Daphne that they just need to find out her situation to find out their rights and her rights. Maddie yells from the kitchen and they discover the video of her being arrested is online and also on the news. The phone starts ringing. It’s the press is calling wanting a comment on the story. Maddie is devastated.

Damien is so proud of the house. He tells Scarlett how sorry he is about how he reacted when she told him about the baby. Damien tells her that he thinks this can work – him, her and the baby. Wait, what about Gunnar? Damien wants to build a family with Scarlett or so he says. Scarlett goes to the window and sees Gunnar standing in the yard. She tells Damien she has to think about things but will she really? Has she already chosen?

Clay is getting stopped on the street by reporters. He tells them that he and Maddie are just friends and to leave him alone. Juliette goes to see Maddie at Highway 65 and she doesn’t give her Travis’s song. Juliette tells Maddie that if she feels alright about what happened with Clay and the police then she should own it. There’s no such thing as bad press. Juliette tells her it’s going to be fine, she promises.

Scarlett tells Gunnar that Damien wants her and the baby to live in the house with him. Gunnar asks Scarlett what she said, he tells her to tell him the truth. He asks her if she has feelings for Damien and she says yes. She tells him she doesn’t know what’s right. Gunnar tells her that he knows that she has to give up something so just let him know when she decides. Scarlett goes to see Deacon and instantly starts bawling. Scarlett tells Deacon she never understood how people could love more than one person, now karma is getting back at her. Deacon tells her to just be honest with herself.

Maddie finds Clay at a bar to talk to him about what happened. He tells her that there are reporters outside his house and he can’t get home. She asks Clay what he’s been telling reporters and he tells her that he told them they’re just friends. Maddie asks Clay why she would tell them that. Clay tells her that’s what he needs them to be. Clay tells her that they live in two different worlds. He understands that she was trying to stand up for him, but he could have gotten shot. Clay tells Maddie that he needs some time to himself right now. Where are the tissues?

Scarlett meets Damien and tells him that she knows he would like to be that guy that wants to be a good dad and live in the house. She says that they know he’s not that guy, is he? Damien tells her that’s why he loves her. She doesn’t know him that well and he already knows him better than any woman ever has. Damien tells Scarlett that he really is going to try to be that guy and Scarlett replies, “But you’re not that guy, are you?” Damien says if he’s being honest, he’s not. Scarlett tells him to walk away from her and she turns and leaves.

Juliette is listening to the song Travis sent Maddie. She calls Travis and tells him that she gave it to Maddie, but she didn’t want it. Girl, no you didn’t! You thief! This is looking a lot like the old Juliette. She’s come too far to do something like this again! Maddie is completely devastated that Clay broke up with her. Deacon tells her that it’s not such a bad idea that they take some time apart. He tells her that she hasn’t ruined everything, life is long and things change. Deacon tells her that if it’s not meant to be, nothing can make it happen. What a good dad talk!

Scarlett tells Gunnar that things are over with Damien but we’re not so sure. She’s crying over the whole thing and she is pregnant with his child. Gunnar leaves the room because he doesn’t want to watch her cry over another guy. Juliette almost does the right thing and sends the song meant for Maddie to Maddie then she chickens out. Get it together Juliette. You’re better than this and we all know it!

Maddie does the only thing she knows to do to heal her heart: she picks up her guitar and sings.
