Interviews
Natalie Stovall – Can’t Love You No More
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Fun and soulfully country.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert, Reba, Aerosmith, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Can’t Love You No More.”
A) I love having fun, uptempo songs for the summer. Summertime makes me want to dance and be outside. This song was born from the idea of celebrating the things we love, and how I couldn’t love this person any more than I already do! It’s swampy and swanky which is my favorite place to live in music.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) People have told me this song is “So Natalie” and I think that is because it has a lot of my natural personality in it. Lyrically and musically, it’s playful and got some swagger to it – and everybody loves that fiddle.
Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) It’s truly different every time. I am still surprised the way song falls into my lap. Sometimes the idea comes with a melody, sometimes it’s only a melody and others it’s just a lyrical idea sitting in my phone or journal for months on end. Songwriting keeps me on my toes, for sure!
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) The right producer is SO IMPORTANT. I have been lucky to work with a few that have been instrumental in helping me get my ideas out into a musical form. I always am very active in the production process. It’s super fun, but I also need someone that can help keep me focused. I get so excited by musical ideas in the moment, but there’s just simply not enough time to chase down every single idea that happens in the studio. Working with the kind of producer that can help me decipher which ones are good ideas and which ones are wild goose chases… that’s crucial for my creative process.
Q) You’re out on tour now. What can fans expect from a live Natalie Stovall performance?
A) A tornado of blonde hair and fiddle strings.
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?
A) I am working on all kinds of new music right now, but I’m not at a point yet where I know what the next project will look like. I can say that I’m always thinking in terms of my next album. It’s been a long time coming.
Q) You’ve performed for The Grand Ole Opry to Oprah to the White House. Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) Man, there’s nothing like the Opry. Playing at the White House was one of the most surreal moments of my life. Another was playing “Devil Went Down to Georgia” at the Bridgestone Arena with Charlie Daniels for his 40th annual Volunteer Jam. I’ve closed my own shows with that song for years and it was a dream come true to get to play THAT song on THAT stage with the man himself. I can’t even imagine the feeling of playing Bridgestone for my own show.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Bruno Mars
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Lucie Silvas’ new record is UNBELIEVABLE. I’m such a fan: her voice, her songwriting, the production – it’s all there. She’s also a stellar human being.
Q) We loved seeing you on “The Voice.” Have you kept in touch with your former coach Blake Shelton?
A) We haven’t actually seen each other since the show! He’s in LA most of the time these days and my schedule hasn’t gotten me back out there since I wrapped up filming with “The Voice.” I’m sure we’ll run into each other soon.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I LOVE social media and the way it allows us all to keep in touch with our fans. I’ve always been a camera-happy person and now I can immediately share stories and memories with anyone and everyone that wants to follow along. It’s also a way where I can share my heart and say thank you to people and I love that. I still like to keep certain parts of my life private, but I’m mostly an open book. Social media is just an extension of my life.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) THANK YOU for listening, for lifting me up, for giving me inspiration and for giving me a career. I have only scratched the surface of what is possible with music and where it will take me. Having support and people who cheer me along keeps me going. I’m always so amazed when people drive hours and hours to come see a show. It’s humbling, and it makes me want to work even harder.
