Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I would describe my sound as soulful pop vocals with contemporary R&B flair.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) I draw from the old and new school: Whitney Houston, Troye Sivan, Brandy, Lionel Richie, Betty Who, Donny Hathaway and Kehlani are some of my favorites.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Flexin’ My Vibe.”

A) “Flexin’ My Vibe” is about everybody being somebody – worthy of taking a selfie!

Q) How did you come to work with The Selfie Kid?

A) I took a selfie with Ryan (a/k/a Selfie Kid) at the end of the red carpet at the 2018 iHeart Radio Music Awards and he ended up being seated next to me. We hit it off and the next time he came back to LA we went into the recording studio to create something fun.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think the fans enjoy the combination of Ryan, who’s never released anything musically, with the catchiness of the music.

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) With the exception of the opening scene, it’s all self-made – shot in selfie mode. It gives Ryan a chance to show a different side of himself.

Q) What did it mean to you have the song featured on Tigerbeat

A) It was super dope to have the song featured on Tigerbeat because it’s a cute, positive outlet that I enjoy myself.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) My songs are a moment in time. They capture the feeling, thought, memory and/or emotion I’m feeling at that moment. Sometimes songs spawn from an idea or lyric or sometimes we start with the track and build from there.

Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) I am very hands on and almost always involved in the production of my music. I love collaborating with my producers to craft the sounds that support the message/vibe of the song.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Rayvon Owen performance?

A) You can expect to laugh, to cry, to think, but mostly to have a good time vibing out to good music. I want to create a welcoming experience where people can let loose and escape reality, but walk away with some realistic hope.

Q) Will there be an EP or full album coming in the near future?

A) One hundred percent coming in the very near future. [wink]

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) I love performing at colleges and really love Pride festivals. Pride, in particular, is always a welcoming crowd and everyone is just happy: celebrating life and freedom and how far we’ve come as a community.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) Tayla Parx because she’s an incredible artists, writer and human being

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) The album We Need to Talk by Tayla Parx for reasons above

Q) What did you learn from your time appearing on “American Idol?”

A) Being yourself is the best thing you can do personally and as an artist.

Q) What advice would you give to others looking to enter the music business?

A) I hate to repeat myself here, but BE YOURSELF. Don’t recreate/copy what you think is cool because you probably can’t do it better than the person you’re copying. Own your own sound and vibe. Tweak it and make it the best it can be and take every opportunity you can within the entertainment business.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) As much as social media can be toxic, it is beautiful for staying connected with the people that have voted for me and supported me. It’s definitely worth it when you can give someone the representation that they may not get to see otherwise.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) To all my fans, my Raybaes… y’all are the reason I get to do what I love. To me, that is true love. Thank you for loving me.
