Rizzoli & Isles – A Shot In The Dark
By: Natasha Collins-Lynn
We open on gas station in Maine where a young woman steps out of her car. A State Trooper pulls in behind her and gets out. He is interested in the plate and dusts off mud caked on it. The young woman is eyeing him slightly from inside. As he rounds to check on the vehicle’s front plate, he finds the same thing and knocks on the passenger window. When it is rolled down, a gun sticks out and shoots him. The store clerk grabs a gun and starts towards the door, but the young woman breaks a bottle over his head and takes the gun outside. She watches as the car pulls away and drives off without her. Looking around at the dead trooper, she takes the gun she has and sprints into the woods.
Switch to Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and Isles (Sasha Alexander) in a park ordering coffee. Jane says she isn’t sleeping because she is troubled by the fact that Alice, the only lead on who burned down her apartment and hacked her accounts, has gotten out of jail. This woman has a connection to the man who kidnapped Maura and the woman who burned Jane’s apartment down. Maura tries to help Jane explore her feelings about it, but Jane hasn’t spoken to this woman since the police academy. So, why her? She has no idea.
Back at BPD, Jane is looking over the connection board for the crimes against her. Korsak, Frankie and Jane are discussing the case when Frankie (Jordan Bridges) states that Alice was released into the same type of car we saw in the opening. A BOLO (“Be On The Look Out) goes out for it. There was no video for who picked her up and Korsak (Bruce McGill) says he wants protection on Jane now that Alice is out. She refuses and because we learn that Korsak is getting married today, it seems that Jane has won.
Narcotics tells Jane that they caught Alice on luck because she was pulled over with enough cocaine in her trunk to bring her up on distribution, but that she has never been in trouble ever before. They came up with nothing on an organization she works with, but Jane is certain there must be one.
Korsak decides to talk to Alice’s dad, a legacy officer. A hit on the car comes in as being involved in the murder in Maine. A woman named Wendy Allen (Jaimi Paige) is the owner, who happened to be Alice’s cell mate. Jane and Frankie head to Maine. After some tension with the local troopers, Maura declares she wants a sample of the mud from the dead trooper’s nails so they can know where Alice Sands was before she got there. As they get a hit on Wendy’s location, Maura takes the samples back to Boston.
As the officers close in on Wendy, a K9 officer barks in the distance and is shot. Jane and Frankie come up on him. Meanwhile, Korsak is meeting with Alice’s father. He is very distraught about Alice and doesn’t know what is going on. He says she quit the academy. He hasn’t talked to her since she was arrested. He also gives Korsak the lowdown on everything from Alice’s childhood.
Korsak leaves and heads to the Dirty Robber where his wedding is set up and waiting for him. Jane will be late and Maura is running tests until Vince calls. He phones Jane in Maine and as she ends the call she keeps looking for Wendy, who ambushes her with a gun to her head. Jane tries to fend for herself, but Wendy declares that Alice loves her and isn’t using her. Jane tries telling her that the woods are full of angry troopers and Wendy isn’t a killer. With such a convincing plea, Wendy gives her the gun.
Nina (Idara Victor) phones Jane to tell her that Wendy’s family owns a cabin about forty-five minutes from the Canadian border and she’ll send the coordinates. Back in the ME’s office, Maura is analyzing the sample and discovers it comes from the banks of the Charles River. Jane, meanwhile, is trying to convince Wendy that Alice is using her for her cabin just like she used Joe Harris. Wendy keeps repeating that she loves her. In the argument, Wendy lets it slip that Alice has a son and Jane sets Nina on the look near the Charles River.
Korsak’s wedding is postponed just as Jane gets back to Boston. Nina shows them photos of Alice who has dyed her hair to look like Wendy Allen. Therefore, no one is looking for her. She was also spotted in Canada as of two hours ago. Maura has created a psychological profile of Alice. She’s smart and driven. She comes from a family of decorated police officers, but in the academy she didn’t excel because Jane was there and better than her. For her, anything less than number one was a failure. In prison, she had to blame someone when things went wrong so she blamed Jane. Thus, she isn’t going to stop coming after Jane.
Alice’s son, Eric, is discovered by Nina. He visited Wendy every week while she was incarcerated. When she was released, he visited the woman who replaced her in Alice’s cell. He is also a student at Boston Cambridge University, located on the Charles River. He is brought in and talks about how Alice saved him and set him on the right path. He says the cops framed Alice. This guy believes everything she’s ever told him.
Frankie comes in with info – Alice is cornered in Canada and Mounties are moving in. Kiki (Korsak’s fiancé) calls Vince to talk and Jane decides to have Nina check out the businesses of Alice. Turns out, the wedding is happening in twenty minutes to stop interruptions from postponing it. Everyone rushes to get ready. Meanwhile, Nina is pulling up Alice Sands’ businesses, which do not seem legitimate. As news of the wedding reaches them, Frankie tells Nina his new girlfriend is coming and there is a moment where we realize that there is tension between the two of them. Perhaps this new girlfriend won’t last because of this thing that has been blooming between them for a season?
The wedding is happening and it is beautiful. As the couple shares their first dance together, Kent (Adam Sinclair) rushes into the room in full dress kilt regalia. Flash between the celebration and a New Brunswick woodworking truck coming into America. A box in the back of the truck is suddenly unsealed from inside. Something is not what it seems. As the truck pulls up to the wedding, we know that something bad is coming.
Inside, everyone is talking and drinking. Jane gets up to make her Best Man toast. She speaks from her heart about their love and then Kent begins to play the bagpipes to everyone’s chagrin. Inside the truck, a high powered rifle is being assembled. Everyone is spilling out of the bar to throw rice at the couple as they leave, unknowing of the gun so close to them. As they exit, Jane notices what no one else does: a red dot dancing across Kiki and Vince. It is a rifle’s targeting laser.
The laser lands on Korsak’s chest and it registers with Jane. She frantically is moving towards him as she yells, “Gun!” A shot rings out as the screen goes black.
