Interviews
Sarah Silva – Lazy
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I describe my sound as soothing and tranquil yet wild and natural. Like a roller coaster going up and down. Having different tones and textures.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I have a few. To name a couple I’d say Sabrina Claudio, Kali Uchis, Omar Apollo and Paloma Mami. It’s great to keep up with the people that you admire, watching their success inspires you and motivates you with your own goals.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Lazy.”
A) “Lazy” is a romantic/sad Latin pop song. So many of us have that love or that person that we love unconditionally and for whom we feel everything, but this feeling is not mutual. We become so attached to this person that it makes us “lazy” as the song says, to look for someone else because you know that you will not find anyone like that person.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I’ve been wanting to write a song about this because I feel like it’s a topic that many of us can connect with and it feels so beautiful when you can deeply identify with a song. I think my fans really connected with ‘Lazy” exactly because of this. I also think that what is appealing to them is that the song is 50% in English and 50% in Spanish and that it’s a very chill, relaxed song.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) In the video I’m everywhere. Literally like one second, I’m in outer space and the next I’m in a cartoon. This ties into the song because when you are so into someone you’ll go anywhere and do anything for them. At the same time, throughout the entire video I’m wearing blue and in general there is a lot of blue everywhere. This could signify feeling “blue” because the other person doesn’t feel the same.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I don’t have a specific writing process. It’s really more about how I’m feeling at the moment. When inspiration comes, it comes and it catches you off guard. When my mind starts flowing with ideas, I just start writing them down and recording them on my phone wherever I am. Also, when I am prepared, I’ll either write with a guitar or piano or sometimes my producer has a really cool beat and I’ll just start writing to it. [laughs]
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) For the most part I like starting my songs from starch at the studio and my producer and I start building from there. We get ideas and play around with different sounds and chords as we go.
Q) How do you shake off a long day in the studio?
A) Long days in the studio can be very tiring but always very gratifying. They usually end late at night so all I want to do is snuggle up in my bed, but I do always get some food before ending the day which is always nice.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) As of now I’ve been releasing singles only and I think I’m keeping it like that for a couple more months, then I’ll see about releasing an EP or maybe even an album. As of now I really enjoy putting out singles.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I really love performing in Argentina. Well, really all of Latin America. The people are so sweet and so supportive. It’s just such a good environment to perform because the energy is always there. I’d also say my hometown in California – it feels so special.
Q) With live performances currently on hold, do you have any plans for any live streaming events?
A) Yes, I have been doing quite a few the past months for different social media outlets and for my own page as well on IG Lives. I do them very often so keep an eye out for them on my socials. [smiles]
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I have so many artists I would love to collaborate with in the future, but to name a few I’d love to have a song with Carlos Santana. His energy when playing the guitar is so contagious and it’d truly be an honor to work with such a talented person. Also, I’d love to collaborate with J Balvin. Apart from the fact that he’s one of my favorite artists, it makes me so happy to see that a fellow Latino has had such a powerful impact on one of the biggest and most difficult industries, the music industry. For me, as an upcoming Latin artist, it’s amazing to see how the doors are opening for us little by little because of these innovating artists.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Social media became a big part of our lives very suddenly and changed it completely. It’s given opportunities to so many and it’s connected us in a way we never were. For example, with the whole pandemic going on we were able to stay together and strong because of social media.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I’m eternally grateful for everyone and I thank God each night for all of them. Can’t wait to start performing for them again!!!
