Sasheer Zamata & Stella Meghie – The Weekend

Q) This was a really expert film from the story to the really great comedy throughout the entire film with much-needed representation in feature films today. Talk about the importance of representation for you?

Stella Meghie: Thank you. I want to see myself, so I make films about girls like me and my friends. And, so there needs to be varied and layered and a wider breadth of black women on camera.

Q) And for you, Sasheer, what was it like being a comedian portraying Zadie who is also a comedian?

Sasheer Zamata: It helps that I’m a stand-up and I guess I understand what it’s like to be brutally honest and Zadie is definitely that. She’s kind of like an unfiltered version of what I aim to be. And, yeah, it was very fun to play someone who is unapologetically herself.

Q) This film’s premise makes for a very awkward weekend for Zadie, but more-so for her ex and his current girlfriend, doesn’t it?

Sasheer Zamata: She doesn’t feel awkward, I don’t think. She does make people around feel very awkward though, which [laughs] can be fun. But, yeah, usually I’m on the other end of that. Usually I feel the anxiety, but it’s fun to dole it out a little bit.

Q) Imagine this were a real-life situation where you were that close with an ex, would you have ever gone on a trip like that?

Stella Meghie: I would never be caught dead in any type of situation like that. [laughs]

Sasheer Zamata: Yeah, no way. I don’t really keep exes around that long!
