Interviews
Serena Foster – Eruption
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My sound is definitely is electro-pop. I really like sounding different than any other pop artist out there right now. My voice adds a lot to that and the way I sing is different than a lot of other similar artists.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I have so many musical influences in my life, but to name some top favorites of mine, I would say Julia Michaels, Bebe Rexha and Kygo.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Eruption.”
A) “Eruption” was originally inspired simply from the idea of writing a song about anythingother than love and relationships. I find myself writing a lot about boys, dating, crushes, etc., which of course there is nothing wrong with, but I really wanted to write about something other than that. When my producer Raz Klinghoffer and I were in the studio working on this in the early stages, this song particularly just had a feeling of hope and positivity, so it seemed fitting to write about loving yourself. “Eruption” is a self-love anthem for anyone that needs a pick me up or a reminder that they freaking rock.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I have noticed lately a lot of my fans have been messaging me and telling me how this song has helped them through a rough time and helped remind them to love themselves before anything else. I love giving my fans music that they can jam too and feel strong after listening.
Q) The video is crafted within two single shots. How does it play into the message behind the song?
A) So funny story…we actually planned on doing a one-shot music video initially, but as we were shooting we realized that just like life, nothing is perfect. So, we decided to make it two shots, just to mess with the concept we had initially planned just to really play on the theme of the song. The video speaks to people because sometimes you need to just look at things in one point of view without a bunch of distractions and so many people were able to get that from the music video. I start on the first floor of an empty parking garage and at the end of the video I am on the top dancing and twirling around. This was my way of showing that you can overcome challenges and end up on top, just like a literal volcanic eruption of our very own self-love.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Hmmm yes and no. I can write any way, it depends how I was inspired at the time.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I am not actually behind the computer myself making the beats, but I am a part of it for sure. I am blessed to have done my last four singles (including “Eruption”) with the amazing and genius producer, Raz Klinghoffer, A.K.A. Hamster.
Q) What can fans expect from a live Serena Foster performance?
A) Ask anyone of my fans, when you come to my show, all insecurities are left out the door and we are having a blast together. I live for performing for my fans.
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?
A) Hmmm maybe…That is a secret for now, but I’ll just say stay tuned.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I loved performing at the Hotel Cafe recently. It has definitely become one of my all-time favorite venues right now because of the intimacy I felt there on stage with the audience and my fans.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I would absolutely love to collaborate with different genres and make music with artists you wouldn’t expect. Florida Georgia Line, Quavo and Imagine Dragons? Any of those would be dope. I hate staying in one box, why not go in all the boxes.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been playing Bebe Rexha’s new album Expectations right now non-stop and loving every second of it.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) YES! I love this question because social media has changed the way of the music industry where I can connect with my fans in such a special way. I am grateful to everyone that supports and follows me on social media and I love keeping them in the loop.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I love you all so much and I would be nothing without every single one of my fans. I love love love love love you all. <3
