In a flashback, Young Jonathan (Jacob Skiba) arrives in Edom, and Lilith (Anna Hopkins) approaches him. He tells her to stay away from him, but she tells him there’s nothing to be afraid of. Jonathan asks who she is, and she tells him she’s his mother and that Jocelyn isn’t his true mother. Lilith tells him that her blood makes him special and she promises to never let anything back happen to him. She grabs his arms and he screams at the burning of her touch. In the present, Lilith tells Jonathan it’s time.

Clary Fairchild (Katherine McNamara) portals a possessed Jace Herondale (Dominic Sherwood) and herself back to the city. He leads her to Lilith, but Clary stops and demands to know if he killed Isabelle Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia) and Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario). Jace tells her he doesn’t take orders from her, and Clary asks to speak to the real Jace. He tells her there is no way Jace will come back, but Clary tells him that she’ll never give up. Clary tries to run, but Jace runs in front of her, and tells her she belongs to Lilith now.

Elaine Lewis (Christina Cox) tells a Uniformed Officer (Samora Smallwood) that a vampire attacked her daughter, Rebecca Lewis (Holly Deveaux). She insists she’s telling the truth, but the officer doesn’t believe her. Isabelle tries to assure Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende) that the attack wasn’t his fault, but he insists he ruined Rebecca’s life. He asks her to have Charlie check on Rebecca, but Isabelle tells him they’re not together anymore since mundanes and the shadow world don’t mix. Simon goes to visit Rebecca, and takes in her condition.

Detective Dwyer (Conrad Coates) asks Luke Garroway (Isaiah Mustafa) why he was found with a crossbow, and Luke tries to play it off as a hobby. Dwyer accuses him of obstruction of justice in Ollie Wilson’s (Alexandra Ordolis) murder investigation. Luke suggests that Ollie is being framed, and Dwyer tells him he’s under investigation as well. Dwyer ask questions about all of the suspicious disappearances and murders around his investigations, and Luke tells him Clary needs him. However, Dwyer asks Luke why Clary disappeared as well.

As Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.) prepares for Asmodeous (Jack Yang), he tells Alec that his father owes him a favor after everything he’s done. Alec suggests they wait until Lilith is under control, as two free greater demons are worse than one. Magnus is confident that won’t happen, as the spell he’s preparing is to send him to Edom instead of summoning Asmodeous. Alec refuses to go let him go through with it, but Magnus tells him it’s the only way. When Alec still thinks it’s not worth it, Magnus challenges him to tell him that Jace isn’t worth it. Alec doesn’t answer, and Magnus starts the spell.

Before Magnus can step into the flames, Alec grabs him and tells him to come back. Magnus tells Alec that he will as he has him to come back to. They kiss and say I love you before Magnus completes the spell, arriving in Edom. Clary forces herself to trip and takes some broken glass from the ground. She asks Jace to stop, but he activates her stamina rune and forces her to keep walking. She cuts herself with the glass, leaving a drop of blood on the ground.

Rebecca wakes up, and asks what happened, remembering as she feels her neck. Rebecca asks if he did this to Elaine too, and Simon assures her he didn’t. Simon apologizes, and Rebecca asks how long until she turns. He tells her she won’t, and explains how he turned. She is horrified he went through that alone, and tells him that his behavior makes more sense now. Rebecca questions how she didn’t find out sooner, and Simon tells him about Raphael’s hypnosis. Simon offers to do it again, but Rebecca tells him that she wants to be there for him. Rebecca declares she’ll love him no matter what, and asks how Elaine took it. He tells her what happened, and she asks what they’re going to do about it.

Magnus steps into Asmodeous’ lair, and Asmodeous’ disembodied voice demands to know who entered. As Asmodeous appears, he is surprised to see Magnus and embraces him. Asmodeous is impressed that the high warlock of Greenwich is in Edom, but reminds Magnus that he doesn’t call when Magnus corrects him. He asks Magnus if he’s come to his senses about banishing him to Edom, claiming that he’s responsible for who Magnus is today. Magnus replies that he’s who he is because he came to his senses and won’t apologize. Asmodeous asks why he came, and Magnus tells him he needs help. However, Asmodeous gets angry and pushes Magnus away with his magic.

Dwyer demands answers from Luke as Maryse Lightwood (Nicola Correia-Damude) walks into the station. Luke sees her and tells Dwyer that he doesn’t have the time for the interrogation, but Dwyer tells him he’s suspended. Luke puts down his badge and gun before walking away. Maryse informs Luke that Jace has Clary and they’re in the city. Jace brings Clary to Lilith, who comments on the family resemblance between Clary and Jonathan. Clary replies that she doesn’t see it, and Jace presents Lilith Valentine’s rib. She puts the rib on the plate and it is absorbed before she kisses Jace to give him energy. Lilith orders that Clary be changed for Jonathan’s rebirth and Ollie takes her away.

Simon tries to talk to Elaine, but she backs away and begs Simon to not kill her. He assures her he’s not, but tells her that he has to do what he’s about to do. Simon hypnotizes her to believe that he died, and tells her that he will never stop thinking about her. He tells her he will always love her, kisses her forehead, and leaves. Elaine starts sobbing and Isabelle embraces Simon outside.

Clary asks Lilith is Jonathan is worth all of the murder, and Lilith justifies the things people do for their children. Clary asks how she’s going to take her heart, and Lilith mentions that it involves taking her lifeforce. She tells Clary that Jonathan’s death was painful for her, and Clary is surprised that she loves him since demons aren’t capable of love. Lilith tells Clary she has a misguided perspective, and Clary tells her that monsters like Jonathan should stay dead. Lilith strikes her and bounds her hands and feet with fire pokers, telling her that Jonathan isn’t a monster before storming off.

Magnus begs Asmodeous to help him, but Asmodeous questions why he would want to, as Edom is better without Lilith. Magnus asks him to name his price, and Asmodeous asks him to rule beside him. Magnus replies that he shouldn’t have come, but Asmodeous insinuates he enjoyed their time together. Magnus replies that he was a child, and asks if there’s something else he can give. Asmodeous tells him there’s one thing. Luke tells Maryse that she deserved to know the truth about Jace, and she remarks that it’s a problem for another day. They find Clary’s blood drop, and figures that Clary did it to herself to help them track her.

Luke and Maryse tell Alec that they tracked Clary to a mundane building, and Alec tells him that Magnus might not be able to help them. Maryse suggests that Magnus will make a dramatic entrance, and asks for a blade to help. Alec recommends she not join the fight for him, Isabelle, and Max, and Luke adds that Jace is going to need her if they rescue him. Isabelle tells Simon that they need him, as Lilith has Clary and his mark has proven effective against Lilith. Simon declares that he can’t lose Clary too, and agrees to help.

Simon tells Luke, Alec, and Isabelle that he found no sign of her in his search of the building, and Isabelle activates a rune to see supernatural energy in the building. She sees that Lilith has put up portal wards and redirected laylines to the top of the building. Luke warns them that Lilith will use Jace against them, and Simon tells them that he can’t control his mark if Jace attacks them.  Alec hands Simon a stele, and Ollie informs Lilith that the mundanes are evacuating the building due to a fire alarm. Jace determines that there’s no fire, and Lilith questions if Simon is with the shadowhunters. Clary questions why Simon’s presence matters, and Lilith orders her disciples to avoid Simon and kill the rest.

Luke tells Isabelle to try and avoid the disciples so they can try and free them from Lilith’s possession and informs Alec that the building is clear. Jace jumps from the top of the building to the ground in front of Alec. Alec points his bow at Jace, but Jace warns him that Jace is still in there. Alec tells him that the real Jace is willing to die, but Jace freezes the arrow in midair before it hits him. Jace taunts that he wants the real Jace to watch as he tears Alec apart, and attacks him.

Lilith’s disciples surround Luke and Isabelle, and Alec escapes Jace’s grip before drawing his blades and engaging in hand-to-hand combat. He stabs Jace with his blade before sticking him with one of his arrows. Jace kicks him away and they start punching each other. He grabs Alec by the throat and breaks his hand. As Alec lies on the ground, Jace taunts that the real Jace is begging him not to do this before attempting to stab Alec with his arrow. Alec stops his hand and tries to appeal to the real Jace, telling him he forgives him for his possessed actions. Jace drives the arrow into Alec, reminding him that the worst pain a shadowhunter can feel is the loss of his parabatai.

Before Jace can deal the final blow, Magnus arrives and calls out to Alec. He shoots a spell at Jace and Lilith cries out at the action. As Jace struggles, Magnus runs to Alec and tells him to stay with him. Jace vomits out demonic energy, and Alec comments that Maryse told him that Magnus would make a dramatic entrance. Free of his possession, Jace runs to them and tells Magnus to help Alec. Magnus tells him he can’t, explaining that he gave up his magic in exchange for Asmodeous’ help. Jace pulls out his stele, but Alec tells him that it wasn’t his fault. Magnus tells Jace he’ll help Alec, and Jace declares he’s coming for Clary.

Clary tells Lilith that everyone is coming for her, but Lilith is undeterred as she starts cutting into Clary’s chest. Lilith draws a symbol into her chest, and the same symbol appears on Jonathan’s body. She explains to Clary that now Jonathan will live as long as she does. As Luke and Isabelle fight the disciples, Ollie starts punching Luke when he’s on the ground and calls out to the disciples to rise. Some of the disciples start convulsing and winged demons burst out of their bodies.

Jonathan’s heart starts beating while Simon arrives and begins untying Clary. Simon suggests they leave, but Clary tells him they can’t let Lilith resurrect Jonathan. Clary clarifies that Jonathan and Sebastian are the same guy, and they form a plan. Simon hands Clary a stele, and Jace arrives to take out the winged demons. Luke tells him that Clary’s at the top, and he and Isabelle resume fighting the disciples. Clary orders Lilith to get away from Jonathan, and Lilith asks why she would do that. Clary puts the stele to her throat and reminds her that Jonathan can’t live without her. She starts cutting her neck, but activates her sunlight rune as Lilith approaches. Simon runs to Jonathan, and starts to break the coffin.

Jace fights disciples on his way to Clary, and Lilith runs to Simon as he continues attacking the coffin. She attacks Simon and is thrown back by the mark. Simon is thrown out the window and Clary cries out as he falls. Jonathan grabs Clary’s wrist, and Lilith turns to dust and explodes. The disciples stop moving, and Luke and Isabelle determine that Simon stopped Lilith before the disciples awaken. Jace runs to the top of the building, but can’t find Clary. Jace assures Simon that it’s the real Jace, but Simon believes that Clary died in the explosion.
