Two women dress Clary Fairchild (Katherine McNamara) for her execution. Jia Penhallow (Francoise Yip) calls forth Charles Freeman (Christopher Tai) as Clary joins the other soon to be executed prisoners. After stating Freeman’s crimes, Jia asks if he has any last words. He expresses his support for the Circle, sparking some cheers from a few of the assembled inmates. Clary watches as Brother Solomon (Voytek Skrzeta) executes Freeman by burning him alive.

Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende) yells at Jordan Kyle (Chai Hansen) when he tries to console him, telling him they’re not friends and that he heard his conversation with Maia Roberts (Alisha Wainwright). Jordan tells him that the mark on his forehead is the Mark Of Cain, and Simon recognizes it from his Hebrew studies. Simon suggests using the mark to break Clary out of prison, but Jordan asks if he wants that blood on his hands. His fangs come out, and Simon realizes that he has no blood in his fridge. Jordan tells Simon he’ll get blood for him, insisting he do it as his roommate.

Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) tells Isabelle Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia) that the Clave won’t tell him their plans for Clary, and Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.) tells them that he’s been up all night researching a way to free Jace Herondale (Dominic Sherwood) from Lilith (Anna Hopkins). He explains that if he harnesses the strength of a dozen warlocks, he can break the mental prison Lilith has Jace trapped in. However, Magnus needs the high warlock, Lorenzo Rey (Javier Muñoz) to coordinate the spell.

As Jia sentences Trevor Hayes (Bradley Hamilton), Dr. Iris Rouse (Stephanie Belding) approaches Clary, assuring her she can’t hurt her. Rouse tells her that she doesn’t deserve this execution, and Clary declares that no one does. Rouse mentions that her execution was moved up because she refused to resurrect Valentine Morgenstern (Alan Van Sprang). Clary asks why they want Valentine resurrected, and Rouse tells her they wanted to interrogate him about Lilith.

A possessed Jace brings Lilith a weapon to prevent Simon from impeding her plans, a confused Heidi McKenzie (Tessa Mossey). Lilith assures her that she’s safe now, and tells her that Simon killed two of her disciples. Heidi defends Simon, but Lilith tells her that she should never kneel to a man. She tells her to do what she says, and Simon will kneel to her. Clary steps up to be executed, and Jia reads her crimes. When asked if she has any last words, Clary tells her that she is able to bring Valentine back to life with a rune. Jia brings Clary into the Clave’s morgue, and Clary begins drawing a rune on Valentine’s body. She feels some resistance and the lights in the room go out. Jia orders her to stop, but Clary refuses and finishes the resurrection, causing Valentine to wake up screaming.

Luke Garroway (Isaiah Mustafa) meets with his pack, and tells them they are going to break Clary out of Idris He tells them his plan, and reminds them that Clary saved their lives by killing Valentine. Russell (Noah Danby) tells him the pack isn’t doing a suicide mission, but Luke tells him it’s an order. Russell tells Luke that they’re not his personal army, and asks if Clary’s life is worth more than theirs. Despite Russell’s warning that going through with the rescue will lose him his pack, Luke leaves.

Valentine asks where he is, and Jia tells him his return is temporary. Jia tells the Clave to escort Clary away, but Valentine tells her Clary is the only one he’ll speak to. Jia agrees to let Clary do the questioning alone, but warns him that the Clave will be watching. Alec talks to Lorenzo about Lilith, and explains the plan Magnus came up with. However, Lorenzo doesn’t want the warlocks to make enemies with Lilith. Alec tells him that Lilith is the one who corrupted the laylines, and threatens to tell the other warlocks that Magnus was the one who actually fixed them. Lorenzo promises to speak to the warlocks about it, and shakes hands with Alec.

Simon calls a rabbi and asks him about the story of the Mark of Cain. He is disappointed to find that the mark in the story wasn’t removed, and hangs up. Simon gets a call from an unknown number, and answers it. Heidi tells him she left the Praetor and that she’s as his house, mentioning his baby pictures. Simon runs to his family’s house, and Heidi remarks how fast he is. Simon sees that Elaine Lewis (Christina Cox) and Rebecca Lewis (Holly Deveaux) are being held hostage with duct tape over their mouths. Heidi tells Simon to have a seat, and Simon begs her not to hurt them. She tells him that she’s not mad at him, and nothing he can do will make her love him less. However, she questions if his family will feel the same, and asks him why he hasn’t told them his secret, suggesting they find out how his family will react.

Valentine is impressed by Clary’s newfound abilities, declaring her his greatest creation. Clary tells him she was never his and asks how he knows Lilith. He plays dumb, but Clary tells him he must know what she’s planning since it involved digging up his grave. Valentine asks if she’s going to use the last minutes of his life for the Clave’s purpose, and she tells him it’s about doing what’s right. He confesses that he used Lilith’s blood to inject Jonathan, and that she got a child in return.

Catarina Loss (Sophia Walker) tells Magnus that Lorenzo forbid the warlocks from helping him, and that she can’t risk leaving Madzie alone. She apologizes and Magnus understands. She reminds him that there’s someone else that can give him the power he needs, but Magnus refuses, deciding to try and talk to Lorenzo. Jordan goes to the Institute and requests to speak to Isabelle. Identifying himself as Simon’s Praetor protector, he tells her that Heidi escaped the Praetor and he believes she has Simon, handing her Simon’s clothing.

Heidi tells Simon that his family deserves to know the truth. Simon tells her that they wouldn’t believe him, and Heidi tells him he’s not giving them enough credit. Simon begs her not to tell them, but Heidi tells them that Simon is a vampire. Heidi removes their duct tape, and Elaine asks who Heidi is. Simon tells her that Heidi is a vampire like him, but Rebecca calls Heidi a lunatic. Heidi slams Rebecca’s head repeatedly on the table, and tells her not to be rude. Elaine tells Heidi that she just committed a felony assault, and offers to get her sentence reduced if she lets them go now. Heidi cuts Rebecca’s neck with a knife, and Simon fights the temptation of the blood.

Valentine tells Clary that Lilith wants to reunite with Jonathan, and Clary tells him that Jace killed Jonathan. He asks her if she thinks death would stop Lilith, and Clary realizes Lilith intends to resurrect Jonathan. Jia comes in and announces that the interrogation is over. Valentine comments that he has more to say, but Jia assumes that Lilith wants a part of his remains for the resurrection.  She orders the Clave guards to kill Valentine and incinerate the body, but Valentine breaks free of his restraints and grabs Jia. He declares that he’s not going back, and takes her with him.

Valentine orders everyone to step aside, as Jia orders them to kill him. Clary orders him to let Jia go, and he asks if she’d prefer burning to death to escaping with him. She tells him she does, and he insinuates that she’s just like him. Clary declares she’s nothing like him and stabs him to free Jia from his grip. A guard shoots an arrow into Valentine’s neck, but he pulls the arrow out and declares he can’t be killed. Valentine grabs Clary by the neck as she attacks him, and throws her before escaping.

Magnus confronts Lorenzo, accusing him of lying to Alec. Lorenzo tells Magnus that he promised to speak to his people and he did. He tells him that he told the warlocks to stay away from his vendetta, but Magnus tells him that he’s trying to save lives. Lorenzo accuses him of only trying to save Jace, and tells him that Jace’s death is not his concern. Magnus warns him that Lilith poses a danger to everyone, but Lorenzo insists that he took over as high warlock because Magnus couldn’t handle the job.

Lorenzo accuses him of letting his heart dictate his actions, and refuses to help him. Magnus strikes him with his magic in anger, but Lorenzo throws him into a car with a stronger blast of magic and tells him that attacking his superior is grounds for banishment. Magnus declares that the only thing superior is his ego and they fight each other with magic. He blasts him, and Lorenzo declares he’s done before walking away.

Simon struggles to fight his urges, declaring he won’t feed on his family. Heidi tells him it’s the only way they’ll believe him. Simon asks what her plan is, and she tells him they’ll start a new life together. He asks why she would think he wants to do that, accusing her of being obsessed with him and telling her that she doesn’t deserve his love. She points the blade at him, and he urges her to do it. However, Heidi tells him she knows about the mark.

Elaine asks Heidi to take her instead of Rebecca, but Heidi pushes Rebecca towards Simon despite his begging to stay back. Rebecca continues to approach him, insisting everything’s going to be okay. Unable to fight, Simon bares his fangs at her. He bites into her, and Elaine screams at him to stop. Heidi runs away as Isabelle and Jordan arrive. Isabelle tells him to stop and he pulls away. She takes Rebecca away and determines she’s still breathing. Elaine grabs a knife and orders Simon to get away from Rebecca, declaring that he’s not her son and a monster.

Luke is unable to reach Magnus, but leaves a message requesting that he make a portal for him. Detective Greere (Alex Mallari Jr.) and Detective Mendez (Rachelle Casseus) approach him and ask why he hasn’t been answering his radio. Luke tells them it’s family business, but they are suspicious and tell him that the Lieutenant wants to talk about Ollie’s disappearance. During his escape, Valentine kills the guards and frees the prisoners. After killing Brother Solomon, Valentine addresses the prisoners and the Circle members cheer for his return. He activates the circle rune and declares they’ll escape.

Alec checks on Magnus, and tells him they have no leads on Lilith or Clary. Alec asks if something is burning, and Magnus tells about his fight with Lorenzo. Alec blames himself for being too selfish to kill Jace when he asked, declaring he has to kill him. Magnus tells him there’s another way, and explains he can summon his father. Isabelle consoles Simon, but Simon blames himself. She reminds him that Heidi manipulated him, but Simon reminds her he fed on his own sister. Isabelle tells Simon that Rebecca will be okay, and Simon realizes he’s unable to live a normal life. Simon tells her that Elaine was right about him being a monster, but Isabelle calls him a good man and tells him they’ll get through this.

After murdering several guards and inmates, Valentine attempts to open a door but is unable to. Clary tells him it won’t work, but Valentine declares he won’t let her stop him. She tells him she’s coming with him, but he tells her that offer has expired. Clary tells him that her friends need to know about Jonathan’s resurrection, by any means necessary. Clary opens the door and undoes the resurrection rune, declaring he’s not coming with her. Valentine warns her she’ll never be rid of him, declaring her a Morgenstern. She agrees that she is, but she’s also a Fairchild as Valentine dies. A guard approaches her and she surrenders, asking him to destroy Valentine’s body. However, he pulls out a piece of Valentine’s flesh and reveals himself as Jace. He tells her that Lilith needs Valentine’s flesh and Clary’s heart, taking her with him.
