Speechless – H– HEY, YOU

The DiMeos all tell Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough) that he needs to stop greeting all of his previous flings by hyper-sexually saying “hey you” in a suggestive manner. Kenneth argues he has romantic needs and is just recognizing a beautiful past encounter, but they stand firm on their rule.

 

Mr. Powers (Jonathan Slavin) tells his film class that they have to make a romance movie. He recently got dumped and if their film doesn’t make him believe in love again, they’ll receive an F. JJ (Micah Fowler) and his partner Aaron (Christian Lees) rack their brain for ideas before Ray (Mason Cook) tells them they should cast him and his crush Izzy (Kayla Maisonet) as the leads. They agree, figuring they have nothing to lose.

 

However, when Ray and Izzy arrive, it’s clear Ray exaggerated their chemistry, as Izzy doesn’t even recognize who Ray is and has absolutely no interest in him. During the scenes, Izzy tells JJ she can’t act something that isn’t true, so they rewrite the script with Ray as different characters until she’s attracted to one of them. Izzy finally admits she thinks the script is bad, which infuriates JJ.

 

Izzy goes over to the house that night while JJ brainstorms new ideas for the script. Ray still tries to impress Izzy, going to make her some dinner. JJ and Izzy go for a walk, and Izzy asks him why this project is so hard for him–she saw his other movies and thought he grasped human behavior in those wonderfully. JJ is touched she watched his past projects, telling her she’s now open to her input. She admits that the love interest shouldn’t be perfect. Rather, he should be real and someone who has trouble putting themselves out there but does anyway. Though Izzy successfully films the romantic scenes with Ray, it’s clear the real spark is between her and JJ.

 

Maya (Minnie Driver) and Melanie (Sarah Chalke) practice the pitch for their adaptive clothing line on Kenneth, who thoroughly enjoys the presentation. The two hug, telling one another they’ve each been a godsend.

 

The next day, Melanie is completely unfocused and forgetful, and Maya immediately realizes its because of Kenneth flirting with her. Maya demands that Kenneth stop interfering with her business, but Kenneth tells her to calm down and that everything will be fine.

 

Unfortunately, things go from bad to worse with Melanie preoccupied and Kenneth planning a surprise weekend getaway for the two of them. Maya takes Melanie to a dog show that she lies and says is a women in business conference, but when she opens the hotel room, Kenneth is there with a rose waiting for Melanie.

 

Kenneth and Maya argue, coming to the consensus that Melaine needs to choose one of them. Melanie says that she’s just getting to know them and, if she can’t have both, she chooses neither. Maya laments the story to Ray, who tells her he needs to fight for Melanie and not take no for an answer. JJ says that Izzy pointed out that’s a toxic trope, but Maya does it anyway.

 

Because Kenneth has boxed Maya’s car in, she hops in his Jeep so they will show up at Melanie’s house at the same time.

 

During the car ride, Kenneth tells Maya that she’s never seen him in a relationship because his life has been all about the DiMeos since he started working as JJ’s aid. He wants something for himself, too. Maya runs out of the car and tells Melanie that she thinks she might be able to have them both, but if that won’t work, she should pick Kenneth.

 

Jimmy (John Ross Bowie) invites his bandmates over to reunite and play some music. Dylan (Kyla Kenedy) thinks they’re amazing, and they lie to her and say they wrote some of the popular hits they’re playing like “Satisfaction.” They try and play some of their original songs, but Dylan hates them, so they continue the facade with other 80s tunes.

 

Dylan lures them into the school under the guise of having a proper practice space, but she surprises them having the whole school show up to listen to them. Everyone is too young to know the songs are not theirs, so they get away with a great concert. One of Dylan’s classmates, however, introduces them to her dad (Peter Giles)–a record executive. The man immediately knows they’re frauds but covers for them by saying the only reason his company isn’t interested is because they just signed a similar act.

 

Jimmy’s band and the music executive all continue putting on a great concert of covers. The good time quickly escalates into a fight when one of the backup singers wants to sing lead for a song. During their argument, they discuss whose sound is right for them, and the kids start looking up John Mellencamp on their phones.

 

The kids are rightfully angry, and the dads apologize, saying they just wanted to feel glory for a moment. The music executive says that living dangerously, getting caught, and then living to tell the tale is what rock ‘n roll is all about. Jimmy admits he’d do it all over again, and Dylan goes to find the track team so he can perform to a new clueless audience.
