Splitting Up Together – Annie, Are You Okay?

This week’s episode of Splitting Up Together picked up right where last week left off – with a pregnant Lisa Apple (Monica Barbaro) in the hospital. Of course, this moment comes right after Lena (Jenna Fischer) and Martin (Oliver Hudson) have decided to stay together through anything and everything, even if that now means someone else having Martin’s baby. Surprisingly, Lena is supportive and tells Martin to go be with Lisa, even though he’s not too eager to. However, when he goes to talk to Lisa she’s in pain from the baby being breech and is about to undergo a C-section. She’s essentially all by herself because her parents are on a cruise and she hasn’t been able to reach them – and also, Martin is the dad.

Given the current situation Lisa is eager to not let Martin be a part of it all, but he wants to be only if she says it’s okay. As Lisa is taken into the room Lena waits in support and starts thinking back to the days when she found out she was pregnant and how she raised her kids. The wait was long and, eventually, she drifted off in sleep only to be woken up by Camille (Lindsay Price). Camille is worried about Lena being so supportive, but Lena reassures her that she and Martin will be fine. The same can’t be said about Lisa’s support system of rambunctious friends who seem to care more about their lifestyle than her.

Martin and Lisa have a baby girl who Lisa names Annie. Before leaving Martin tells Lisa that even if she doesn’t want Martin to be a part of Annie’s life that one day Annie might want him around. After going back home, Lena continues to be supportive and tells Martin that they should do a meal train for Lisa. But Martin tells her that he’s not planning on doing anything because that is not what Lisa wants. However, Lena begs to differ because she knows that Lisa just needs time and that if in the future Annie ever asks if her father tried to be in her life that answer has to be “yes.”

Mae (Olivia Keville) is onto her parents’ secret relationship and is grossed out by the idea of it. But she thinks that Lena should be the one to tell Milo (Sander Thomas) about it. To try and distract Lena from Martin, we see Mae and Mason (Van Crosby) try to set her up on a date with their friend’s single dad. It becomes obvious to Lena that the kids know about her and Martin and are trying to get her to admit it. Meanwhile, Martin calls the hospital and finds out that Lisa and Annie will be going home the next day and that Lisa is still not ready to have Martin be involved. Confused over what to do, Martin meets with Henry (Geoff Pierson) to get advice over the entire situation. Henry tells him that whatever his decision is he needs to make one he can live with. But Martin is hesitant to force Lisa but also doesn’t know if he should just sit around and do nothing.

Maya (Diane Farr) and Frank (Travis Schuldt) are busy sorting through Frank’s son’s hand-me-downs for the baby. And while doing so Gene (Marc Evan Jackson) shows up at her doorstep with his trophy in hand. It seems he is now interested in Maya because she’s been ignoring him and been busy with Frank. But Maya does not plan on leaving Frank because he takes care of her and gives her attention, unlike Gene.

Lena continues to insist that they check in on Lisa but Martin says they should respect Lisa’s decision. That isn’t enough to convince Lena because she remembers how tough it was when she had their kids, and how much help is needed afterward. Martin says that Lisa deserves to do this on her own if she wants and that Lena needs to focus on him and her right now, especially considering how complicated things have gotten. Without telling Martin, we see Lena show up at Lisa’s house to help her out and she happily accepts. She helps her with nursing the baby by giving her advice and giving her food to make sure she eats as well. Lisa wonders why Lena is so helpful and Lena reminds her that she used to be her and knows what it’s like. Mid-conversation Lisa falls asleep and Lena puts Annie into her crib. Lisa wakes up before Lena leaves and asks if she will see her tomorrow.

Milo catches Martin and Lena kissing when Lena comes home later and the kids officially find out that their parents are back together. On an ironic note, Mason says that families should be honest with each other. Lena and Martin exchange awkward looks considering all the secrets between them.
