Supernatural – Mamma Mia
By: Stacy Miller
The teaser of the episode Mamma Mia showed Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Toni (Elizabeth Blackmore) had set aside the torture for pillow talk and glasses of wine. It seems weird that Sam would decide to go to bed with the woman who was just slicing and dicing and drenching him with cold water. It turns out that this is just part of Toni’s mental torture. Sam is hallucinating the entire scenario and in reality is still bound to the chair. The kisses turn again to cuts with Toni demanding the names and locations of the other hunters and passcodes to the Men of Letters computers. She also wants to know about his dalliance with the demon Ruby. Why? Ruby’s dead so what possible use could that information be?
Meanwhile, Dean (Jensen Ackles) is talking on the phone with Castiel (Misha Collins) who is giving information on his search for Sam in Missouri. Dean admits to his angel bud how concerned he is about treating his mother as to not overwhelm her. “Don’t make things needlessly complicated as you human tend to do,” says Castiel somewhat annoyed. Have you met him Castiel? Both Sam and Dean usually make most things unnecessarily complicated. Dean hangs up with Castiel and Mary (Samantha Smith) enters the room. She heard some of Dean’s conversation and assures her son that she’s fine and can handle herself. However, Mary admits that she is afraid of facing Sam since it was her actions in making that deal with the Yellow Eye Demon that set all of this in motion.
The following morning, Mary tells Dean about the dream she had about John and calls him a good father. Then, Castiel calls Dean with Sam’s location. Dean still insists that Mary stay behind, but she wouldn’t hear it. “Good talk,” Mary says as they head to the car. I loved seeing the car scene between Mary and Dean. The car talks have become a stable of “Supernatural.” It’s the one place where Sam and Dean have their candid conversations. Dean tells Mary how Sam had gotten out of the family business for a while and had gone to Stanford. But Dean adds that it was he and Sam against evil. “The only thing we had in this world, the only thing, aside from this car, was each other.”
While Dean and Mary are dealing with saving Sam, Rowena (Ruth Connell) is having dinner with a man several centuries her junior until she is interrupted by Crowley (Mark Sheppard). Darn it Fergus! Couldn’t you have given your mum one evening to enjoy herself? When was the last time she had a date, before the Salem Witch Trials? Crowley doesn’t care, romance isn’t as important as finding and stopping Lucifer and he needs Rowena’s help with both. A mommy witch’s work is never done!
After a show, Rocker Vince Vincente (Rick Springfield) is visited by a long lost love who apologizes for overdosing on pills. She tells them that they can be together. “But you’re a ghost,” Vince says. “No, I’m an angel.” The woman tells Vincente that she can take away all his pain and give him peace and the only thing he needs to do is invite her in. And with that, Vince Vincente says yes and Lucifer has a new vessel.
Mary tells Dean that since this Toni seems to know all about he and Sam she’ll be expecting him. But with Mary, it’ll be the element of surprise and give them a better chance at rescuing Sam.
Crowley is frustrated that it’s taking Rowena so long to locate Lucifer. “What’s the bloody hold up? He’s the one and only Satan in the phone book.” “It’s witchcraft, not Google Maps,” Rowena retorts. Crowley threatens to tell his mother’s new boyfriend all about her unless she helps him put Lucifer back in his cage. Rowena reminds that they can’t do that as long as the devil is inhabiting a vessel. Crowley assures that Lucifer won’t be when they are finished with him.
Dean and Mary meet up with Castiel, who can’t go inside because of the angel warding. Dean wants his mother to stay with the angel. “Dean, you can keep me from driving but not from hunting,” Mary says.
As Lucifer, Vince Vincente doesn’t have time for rehearsal because he has plans. He pays Crowley a visit and asserts he’s going to reclaim Hell. But Crowley has other ideas. Rowena enters reciting a paralyzing spell to hold Lucifer in place. Then, Crowley throws sulfuric acid in Lucifer’s face and it seriously damages his vessel.
Dean is captured by Toni, but tries to make light of the situation as only Dean can do. “I just came by for tea and a beating.” Toni questions Dean about Benny, the vampire he freed from Purgatory, and then puts on brass knuckles to beat some answers out of him.
While Sam and Dean are going through hell, Lucifer’s Vince Vincente vessel’s face is peeling off. Crowley tells Rowena to send the devil back to his cage. But Rowena’s spell is not working. Lucifer repairs his vessel. Now, there’s really going to be Hell to pay! Crowley leaves his mother to deal with Lucifer’s wrath.
“I thought you were dead. What happened?” Sam asks Dean. “I’ll tell you later. But first thing’s first, who’s Angry Spice?” Dean asks. Sam explains that Toni is from the British office of the Men of Letters. Toni returns and berates Sam and Dean for living at the Men of Letters headquarters among a library of knowledge, but not taking the time to read a single book. She then talks about the body parts most susceptible to pain, taunting that you can die from pain. “Get away from my boys,” Mary says, gun drawn. “Mom?” Sam is shocked to see her alive. What follows as an intense fight between Toni and Mary until Toni uses a Chinese mind controlling spell. Dean knocks Toni unconscious, which renders the spell useless. Suddenly, a man named Mick (Adam Fergus) enters with Castiel. He apologizes to The Winchesters for Toni’s actions and tells them they she’ll face consequences when they return to London. Mick explains that he destroyed the wards that allowed Castiel to enter. This should prove that he means them no harm as Castiel could obviously tear him apart without breaking a sweat. “I don’t sweat under any circumstances,” Castiel says. He urges them to think about joining his side. “What have you got to lose, except your worst nightmares.”
Back at the Men of Letters bunker, Mary has ordered takeout (because she doesn’t cook) and also gives Dean some pie. She then talks about Mick’s offer. “We should call the internet and find out as much as we can about these people,” Mary says. Close Mary, but not quite right.
Lucifer tells Rowena that he could snap her neck and keep it snapped permanently, but has decided to keep a powerful witch like herself prisoner. “What’s the old saying? Friends close, enemies closer.”
Sam brings Mary a cup of tea and John’s journal, which should help her fill in the blanks. “Having you here fills in the biggest blank,” Sam says misty-eyed. Then, he and Mary hug.
Meanwhile, Mick tells Toni if the Winchesters become a problem, they’ll be taken care of and he’s already sent for “him.” The episode ends with a man whose face isn’t shown packing a bag. Who is he and what trouble does he hold for Sam, Dean and Mary?
