Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy) and Kat Edison (Aisha Dee) notice Brooke Langley (Alexandra Turshen) standing in the lobby, and Sutton tells the security guard that Brooke is with her.  She introduces Brooke to Kat, and Brooke asks them how long they’ve been working at Scarlet. Oliver Grayson (Stephen Conrad Moore) greets Brooke and hands Sutton a dog to take care of.

As Jane Sloan (Katie Stevens) lies in bed, Ben Chau (Luca James Lee) texts to confirm their lunch date. After they sit down, Ben admits that he’s not used to going on dates. Jane tells him about her journey to becoming a writer, and they bond over their nerdiness as kids. Ben asks how the writing is going, and Jane tells him about her job situation. He is confident that she’ll figure things out, and Jane is taken aback when Ben says grace once their food arrives.

Kat calls Adena El Amin (Nikohl Boosheri), checks their joint calendar for the evening, and sees that Adena has party plans with a Leila (Katerina Tannenbaum). Adena explains that Leila is an old friend of hers that she ran into recently. She admits that she’s tired of that scene, clarifying that she means the New York art lesbian scene. Kat tells her that she’s never heard of it, but Adena tells her she’s not going to the party.

Kat asks Sutton if she should be worried about Adena’s hesitancy to go to the party. Sutton tells her she should ask Adena about it, but Kat admits that communication is hard. Sutton reminds her that it’s part of being in a relationship, and asks Kat what it takes to be Brooke. Kat answers that it’s hard work and hustle, but Sutton believes there’s more to it. Sutton answers her own question when she mentions Brooke’s connections, and Kat is confident that she’ll be able to find her own connections to move up.

As Brooke and Oliver conclude their meeting, Oliver tells Sutton he wants to email potential dresses to Brooke’s apartment. Sutton suggests they do the fitting at the office, and Oliver asks why she wants extra work. She claims that it’s good experience, and he tells her to go ahead. Jane tells Kat and Sutton that she enjoyed her date, but is hesitant about Ben’s religiousness. Sutton reminds her that she’s dated religious guys before, and Kat suggests that she has unresolved issues. Jane denies it, claiming her only issue is paying for things until she finds a new job.

Sutton overhears Brooke talking on the phone about moving, and asks her about it. Brooke admits that she’s moving away from an ex-boyfriend, and tells her the story. Sutton tells her that she’s recently single as well, and Brooke suggests they go out on the town together sometime, which Sutton eagerly agrees to. Jane buys a biscotti at a coffee shop in order to keep her table and Ryan Decker (Dan Jeannotte) approaches her.

Jane comments that it’s been six weeks since they’ve last seen each other, but Ryan points out that it’s less with her television appearance. He tells her that he thought she did great, and she tells him to step into his office. Sitting down, Ryan asks how she’s been and Jane tells him she’s unemployed and in sweat pants. She asks him if he’s dressed for an interview, and he tells her he had a movie premiere the night before. He tells her that his new job is going to parties and writing about them for a gossip magazine and that he’s working on a novel in the daytime.

Jane asks if she can work for the magazine, but Ryan tells her that she is not a gossip writer. She asks what he has that she doesn’t, and he tells her he’s charming and can work a room. Jane takes offense and accuses him of being scared of her out reporting him. Ryan insists that isn’t a thing, but promises to refer her to his editor if she goes with him to his party assignment that night. Kat comes home and suggests to Adena that they go to Leila’s party. Adena is hesitant, but Kat tells her that she wants to meet the people in her life. Adena agrees, commenting that Kat makes good points.

Sutton gives Jane a dress for the party, and Sutton is surprised that Jane is going out with Ryan. Jane insists it’s not a date, and that she has another date with Ben tomorrow. She admits that she’s still bothered by Ben’s religiousness, and tells Sutton that Ryan is getting them into an exclusive party. Sutton asks if he can get her and Brooke inside the party, and Jane sends a text to Ryan.

Jane, Ryan, Sutton, and Brooke enter the party and Sutton buys drinks for Brooke on Scarlet’s credit card. They take a selfie together and Brooke introduces Hugo to Sutton. Ryan takes Jane to meet Noah, who gives him scoop on an athlete sitting nearby. Jane asks Ryan if he takes a lot of dates there, and Ryan asks if she’s jealous. She tells him that she’s been dating Ben, insisting to Ryan he is not made-up. Jane suggests that they do their job, and approaches the athlete’s table. She returns, reporting that the athlete is meeting with a Nike brand rep. Ryan explains that the athlete has a deal with Adidas and changing endorsement deals is a huge story.

Arriving at the lesbian bar, Kat asks Adena how many people she knows there, and Adena estimates about half. As Kat orders drinks, Marie (Catherine Beauchemin) greets Adena by kissing her on the lips. Adena introduces Kat as her girlfriend, and Marie pulls Adena away. Leila comes over and introduces herself, and Kat admits that it’s her first time there. They notice several women excited to see Adena, and Leila comments that she’s too jealous for that. Kat asks if the women are just friends and Leila hesitates before telling her they are.

At the coffee shop, Ryan tells Jane that Nike’s non-comment means the story is true. He agrees to fulfill his promise and talk to his editor about hiring Jane. Ryan tells her he’s leaving to take a nap, and asks her to help report on another party that night. Jane tells him she’s seeing Ben, and he tells her to text him if she changes her mind. As Sutton complains about her hangover, she gets a text from Brooke asking her to go out that night, and she texts back confirmation. She tells Kat that she wants to be a department head like her, and that she’ll do whatever it takes to move up.

Adena thanks Kat for insisting they go to the party, and Kat unconvincingly tells her she enjoyed meeting her friends. When pressed, Kat makes a comment about how many of Adena’s exes were there and asks how many women she’s slept with. Adena insists the past doesn’t matter and asks if them being together now is enough. She tries to kiss Kat, and Kat reluctantly gives in to the distraction.

Sutton continues to insist that Jane is in a triangle with Ryan and Ben, and Kat agrees with Sutton. Jane continues to insist that she likes Ben and is willing to give him a chance despite the religion, but Sutton points out that she keeps bringing it up. Kat asks them how many people they’ve slept with, and they answer with their numbers. Kat asks if they’ve withheld the number from a partner when asked, and tells them how Adena responded. Sutton tells her that a college boyfriend told her that, and that it’s never good. Jane questions what constitutes as sex in a lesbian relationship, and Kat tells them that the number doesn’t matter as much as open communication.

Jane and Ben play Scrabble on their date, and she notices a cross tattoo on his arm. She comments on it, admitting that she’s confused on how someone so scientific could be so religious. Ben admits that working at a hospital can be rough, making faith important to him. Jane replies that she wants good healthcare rather than prayer, and Ben replies that his faith isn’t for his patients. She challenges the existence of God, and awkward silence ensues.

Kat expresses her insecurities about Adena after checking her Facebook page, comparing her jumping through serious relationships to musical chairs. Sutton doesn’t thinks it’s an issue, but Kat reminds her that Adena was dating someone else when they met. Jane returns from her date, insisting that she doesn’t want to talk about it and telling them she’s going to meet Ryan. Sutton tells her that she and Brooke are going to the party as well, and forces Kat to come with them and invite Adena.

The three arrive at the party with Adena, and Kat sees Adena embrace another woman. Brooke introduces Sutton to her friends, and Sutton offers to buy everyone drinks. Kat glares at Adena as she talks to the woman across the room, but Jane assures her it’s nothing. However, Kat goes over to talk to Adena and asks about the woman. Adena tells her that the woman is married to a man. Kat apologizes, and admits that Adena’s handling of the situation is making her jealous. Adena tells Kat that she’s been with more people than her and that she was withholding to be considerate. Kat tells her that she needs honesty and comments that this must have been how her ex felt. Adena freezes and Kat walks away.

Jane talks to the bartender, and he points out a news anchor making out with a girl in the corner. She looks up the anchor and finds that he’s married with a baby on the way. Sutton entertains Brooke and her friends with stories, and is surprised by the huge bill with a five hundred dollar charge she didn’t order. She asks to speak to Brooke in private, and Brooke reveals that the charge is for “party favors.” Sutton tells her that she can’t put that on the Scarlet card, but Brooke assures her she does this all the time with editors.

Sutton tells Jane and Kat that they need to talk, and tells them what happened. She insists that she can’t damage her budding friendship with Brooke, but Jane tells her that it’s not a friendship if this jeopardizes it. Kat tells her that the card is for work drinks and cab rides, but Sutton expresses jealousy that Kat became department head so quickly. Kat suggests that she pay for it herself, but Sutton doesn’t have the money.

Ryan hands Jane a drink, and she tells him what she’s discovered about the anchor. He is surprised and tells her that it’s a good story. Jane questions the ethics of posting the story with a baby involved, but Ryan argues that it’s part of the job. She tells him that she isn’t sure she wants the job, and asks if he’s happy doing this. He tells her that the novel is his passion, but Jane questions how much he’s working on it. Ryan asks why she’s out with him if she finds his life distasteful, and she realizes that he’s right before leaving.

Sutton tries to talk to Brooke, but Brooke interrupts her and invites her to an exclusive dinner party. Brooke’s friends tell her they’ll wait outside for her, and Sutton pays the bill. Jane tells Ben that she acted the way she did due to her prayers being unable to save her mom when she was sick. Ben consoles her and thanks her for telling him. He tells her she doesn’t need to pray to have faith, and she asks if he’s always been religious. Ben tells her that he regained his faith once he started working at the hospital. She admits that it’s hard for her and that she might have judged him unfairly. He tells her that he’s glad she called him back and kisses her. Jane asks about his stance on premarital sex, and he tells her that they’re good before they resume kissing.

Kat and Adena return home, and Adena asks Kat to talk to her. Kat tells her that she doesn’t want to hear her attempts to avoid the issue, and Adena admits that she’s been withholding the truth because she’s trying to protect herself. Adena tells her she’s scared because of the immigration situation, and Kat asks why she didn’t just say that. Adena tells her that she doesn’t want her to feel guilty, but that she’s staying there for her. Kat thanks her for confessing that, and Adena tells her she loves her. Kat tells her she loves her too and they embrace. The next morning, Jane begins an article about her relationship with religion, and Sutton gets a text from Brooke telling her she got her into the exclusive dinner.
