The Girlfriend Experience
By: Dana Jacoviello
The Girlfriend Experience, by writer/director Mark J. Kunerth, is a common story we see in the everyday life of a sad, depressed, lonely and yearning young man in need of companionship. When we go through breakups there are times when we want that person back and make several attempts to do so. They often fail though, as it did in this story. So, what else would you do? How about call up a service that sets one up with an experience of a lifetime…or so he thought.
Graham Patrick Martin plays Max who is in desperate need of…Well, sex. So, he decides the best course of action would be to hire someone to fulfill his needs. However, he also wants that fantasy that we can all easily fall into when swimming in uncharted waters of paying for it to happen. So, of course, when Paige (Erin Foster) shows up she is this sexy, beautiful and tall blonde. This fits right with our reality of how fantasies go. That is until our fantasy is destroyed by the reality of what a true relationship experience is like when spending an evening at home. Let’s just say Max is left speechless, and not in a good way, when Paige comes out of the bathroom ready to begin their sinful night together. Unfortunately for Max, the adventure actually turns into sweatpants, whip cream and endless chatter. They might as well have added burping and farting to the mix! This was not at all what Max expected, but isn’t it reality?
The simplicity and sarcasm of The Girlfriend Experience was beyond satisfying. The movie left me laughing out loud because it is exactly as it says…be careful what you wish for. Paige gave Max just what he asked for…a true girlfriend experience. That is something that many can relate to. Ironically, it is not like what we see in the movies and this short film features the pleasures of hardcore truth. Max hilariously has not much to say throughout this entire extravaganza. He just has this look of disgust on his face of, “Where is the cuddling and romantic sex?” that makes this even more comical. This was played beautifully by both actors. It wasn’t fancy by any means. It was; however, just like watching a disastrous reality show that you can sit back, eat a snack, have a drink and wax our upper lips while laughing along. This is everything I want to see is sarcastic comedy and what you should want as well.
I highly recommend grabbing your partner or spouse and checking this film out. It could possibly even maybe shed some much-needed light or questions about our own relationships. Maybe spice them up a bit if you watch The Girlfriend Experience and can relate too much to it. Though it is funny, the movie also shows that you should be careful what you wish for.
