The Good Doctor – Quarantine

Dr. Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) wakes up next to Dr. Audrey Lim (Christina Chang), and they agree that Dr. Marcus Andrews (Hill Harper) and bourbon is responsible for their hookup. Lim denies having regrets, but she and Melendez agree that it can’t happen again. Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) walks into the hospital, taking in the Christmas decorations and a patient dressed in a Santa outfit, Pete (Rell Battle), before asking about the buzzing noise coming from a flickering light.

Tyler Durness (Dan Byrd) wheels in a patient and Lim declares that they need more staff in the ER. He tells Lim that Dr. Morgan Reznick (Fiona Gubelmann) is still in town and Lim questions how he knows that. Another EMT (Juliana Wimbles) brings in a second patient, Marianne (Veronika Hadrava), and Lim comments on the strangeness of both patients coming from the airport. Marianne reveals that she came from Malaysia, and Shaun diagnoses her as having a pulmonary embolism.

Lim, Shaun and the ER staff work to revive the two patients, and Shaun analyzes a rash on Marianne’s neck as the man flatlines. Lim declares the man’s time of death and Shaun asks if Marianne has had contact with the man. Marianne tells him they were on the same flight and Shaun explains to Lim that both patients most likely have the same infection.

Marianne is put in quarantine and Shaun and Lim attend to her dressed in bio-hazard suits. She admits that she started feeling sick on the plane, and that the man was sitting six to seven rows away from her. Shaun concludes that the virus was transported through the air and that everyone on the plane and in the emergency room has been exposed.

Melendez, Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas), and Dr. Alex Park (Will Yun Lee) talk to Chris Santos (Alex Weed) about his bone marrow transplant. Claire asks if he has any other symptoms and Chris tells her he’s been achy and tired on his neck and arms. Melendez realizes that he’s having a heart attack and that they need to move up the transplant to that day. Lim calls Andrews about the virus and he agrees to contact the CDC.

Morgan sarcastically thanks Tyler for getting her called in on her day off and talks to Pete about his stomach pains. She assesses that he ate too many candy canes and asks Tyler how he knew she was still in town. He assesses that she wasn’t planning to visit family over the holidays and Morgan examines a scar on Pete’s abdomen. Shaun pulls Tyler aside and points out to Lim that he has been infected as well, but they get notification that Marianne is crashing before they can address it further.

Alex calls Chris’ father to tell him they’re moving up the transplant and then greets his son, Kellan Park (Ricky He). After some awkward conversation, Kellan asks how long he’ll have to stay at the hospital. Alex assures him that they’ll have three days together once he finishes his day’s shift. Sadly, the ER team fail to revive Marianne and Tyler watches with concern.

Lim tells the team that they’re on soft quarantine for the moment and Shaun asks if he can have lunch. She tells him that the patients come first and Morgan tends to another patient, Viola (Camille Guaty), with an injury. Lim tells her that she has to run a test for her nerves, but is interrupted by the sound of Kellan arguing with a security guard (Andrea Ware). Kellan identifies himself as Alex’s son and Lim promises to tell Alex where he is but that he has to stay in the waiting room.

Melendez tells Chris that their treatment has prevented his heart attack and asks Alex where is Chris’ father. Alex goes to follow-up, and Chris comments that his father has found a new way to let him down. Shaun goes to run an x-ray on Pete, but is distracted by the buzzing of the flickering light. He asks the security guard if she hears it and Bob Cravens (William McDonald) asks to speak to a nurse. Shaun asks if he hears the buzzing and declares that the light needs to be fixed.

Tyler asks Morgan where they’re going for their date. Morgan points out that he hasn’t asked her out yet, but Tyler questions if she’ll deny a man trapped in isolation. Tyler admits he’ll be nervous and calls her smart and beautiful before telling her that he wants to impress her. She agrees to the date, but determines that he has a fever. Lim reports that a full quarantine has been approved and announces the news to the waiting room about the virus. The people freak out as they’re locked in and Cravens collapses as he tries to escape.

The hospital is shut down and Andrews gives a televised press conference. Melendez shuts off the TV and Claire is concerned that Shaun, Lim and Morgan are in there. Melendez reminds her they need to focus on Chris and Alex tells him that there’s no sign of the donor. Alex gets a call telling him that Kellan is stuck in quarantine and runs to check on him.

Shaun diagnoses Pete and tells Lim that he needs to be somewhere important, but Lim says that he doesn’t need to be anywhere else. Lim asks for a non-surgical way to help Pete, but Shaun’s textbook memories are interrupted by the buzzing light. Shaun reports that he doesn’t have any ideas, but Nurse Deena Petringa (Karin Konoval) makes a suggestion and Lim agrees it could work. Kellan insists he’s fine through the glass and Alex asks why he’s down there. Kellan blames him for being there and insists he’s fine before walking away.

Shaun tries the procedure on Pete’s rectum and Lim urges him to keep pushing. After some screaming, Pete declares that he’s feeling better. Morgan updates Tyler on what they’re doing to help him and tells him that he will experience full respiratory failure if he doesn’t recover. Tyler starts coughing and Morgan suggests that she teach him archery for her their first date. Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara) picks up Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) for his appointment, explaining that Shaun is quarantined at the hospital. Glassman asks to go to the hospital, but Lea questions how he’ll be able to help. Glassman tells her he doesn’t like her sassy attitude and Lea tells him she’s crushed as she drives him to the appointment.

Viola’s husband, Clifton (Colin Lawrence), demands to see her as Alex and a security guard restrain him. Viola comes up to the glass and asks what he’s doing. Clifton blames himself for her being there. She urges him to take care of himself so he can be there for their son. They express their love for each other and Viola breaks down as Clifton leaves. Shaun hears Cravens’ phone ring and answers it. Claire asks why he’s answering the donor’s phone and Shaun tells her he’s in quarantine.

Shaun hands Cravens his phone and Andrews asks why the CDC hasn’t sent a team yet. A woman explains that the outbreak started in Malaysia and the team handing the virus is stuck on the east coast. Melendez observes Lim on security footage and asks what they know about the virus. Andrew tells him what they know and Melendez asks if he can go in and extract Cravens’ bone marrow. Andrews tells them he doesn’t have clearance. Melendez tells him that Chris will die without a transplant, but Andrews tells him nobody is going into or leaving quarantine.

Morgan asks Tyler if he wants to inform anyone of his condition and Tyler admits he thought about calling his mother. Lim checks on Tyler, and determines he needs nitric oxide. Chris is surprised that Cravens actually showed up and Melendez tells him they had to find an alternative donor. Claire notes that the donor isn’t a complete match and Chris says he can’t handle bone marrow rejection. Chris starts coughing and Melendez tells him he’s going to die if they don’t do the transplant soon. Chris admits that he’s just grateful his father showed up and that he’s okay if it’s the end. He requests a DNR form despite Melendez’s suggestion to hold on.

As Lim and Morgan discuss what to do for Tyler, Lim tells Morgan to put her mask back on. Morgan questions why and Lim says she’s been infected before putting herself in Tyler’s room without a suit. Tyler asks Lim if they’ve figured out a cure yet and Lim tells him they haven’t. He says that that at least he seems to be growing on Morgan. However, Tyler flatlines and Morgan watches as Lim tries to revive him.

Melendez tells Claire there has to be another way and Claire suggests they expand the quarantine with a section just for Chris so they can extract the marrow and perform the operation in the same place. He argues that Andrews won’t allow it, but has Claire wish him luck. Morgan makes suggestions on how to help Tyler, but realizes that it’s too late.

A man (Peter Ciuffa) gets Shaun’s attention and tells him that his blood sugar is high. He criticizes Shaun for the dosage he gave him and asks for a doctor who knows what he’s doing. Shaun goes to get him more insulin and Kellan defends Shaun as the man continues criticizing him. Pete throws up on the man and Shaun inspects him. He determines Pete needs surgery, telling him they’ll have to improvise without an operating room.

Shaun rolls a stretcher in front of Lim’s quarantine and discuss how to perform the surgery without the usual equipment. After the makeshift operating room is set up, Lim encourages Morgan to get started and refuses Shaun’s recommendation that she lie down. Lim sits down and Shaun, Morgan and Nurse Dalisay Villanueva (Elfina Luk) operate as Lim observes. Melendez goes to talk to Andrews, but stops when he sees that Lim has forced herself into quarantine on the monitors. Andrews tells him she’s infected and Melendez takes a call.

Lim gives instructions through the glass as Shaun and Morgan operate. Petringa calls for a doctor and Lim instructs Shaun to go help. Melendez sees that Chris is having another heart attack, and tries to revive him despite Claire’s reminder that Chris signed a DNR. Melendez tells him that they will get Cravens bone marrow despite the fact that Andrews hadn’t agreed to the plan yet.

Petringa tells Shaun that the man collapsed to the ground, and the crowd panics. Shaun determines that he’s in hypoglycemic shock, but is distracted by the buzzing light. Kellan starts couching and Alex is concerned from beyond the glass. An attendant (Deborah Finkel) tells Glassman that his test results are in, but Glassman asks to give the hard copy to Blaize himself promising he won’t open the file. Outside, Glassman opens the file and tells Lea that his cancer has come back.

Lim continues to instruct the surgery, but soon collapses on the ground. Shaun is overwhelmed by all of the noises and covers his ears before forcing himself to the ground. Melendez and Claire work to revive Chris. Lea sits with Glassman. Kellan blows into his inhaler as Alex has to be restrained and Lim remains unconscious as Shaun lies on the floor covering his ears.
