Sam (James Denton) and Cassie (Catherine Belle) are celebrating their first anniversary. They share breakfast together and express how fast time passes by when they are happily together. Cassie cannot wait any longer and decides to give Sam his gift, which is a framed original handwritten song called “Maybe I’m Amazed” that is also signed by Paul McCartney. Sam gets truly excited about it and thanks her. He gets thoughtful for a moment and says that he wants to wait until later to give her the anniversary gift.

Martha (Catherine Disher) pays a visit to Abi (Sarah Power) asking for a bouquet of flowers that best suit her personality. So, Abi says that since she is such an influencer and a jet setter, she believes that an orchid bouquet would be the best fit for her. Martha is so excited about it that she ends up saying that those flowers would be great for her new home, which happens to be the historic house of Roger Davenport. Abi doesn’t seem to be quite comfortable to hear this. Martha remembers that it is because of Roger that her and Donovan seem to be cursed. Abi is surprised to know that Martha has decided to buy that house, but the woman explains that it is one of the oldest in Middleton. She also says she intends it to turn it into the new Mayor’s Mansion. Abi doesn’t bother on hiding her discontent and refuses to sell her the bouquet.

In the meantime, Cassie welcomes Joy (Katherine Barrell) to the Grey House. Joy compliments Cassie on the house’s architecture. When she is asked by Cassie about the reason why she is in town she only says that there is a job there she is interested in and is planning on getting it. However, she won’t explain further since she doesn’t want to jinx it. Cassie invites her for breakfast. After she leaves, Joy brings a piece of paper out of her notebook that has some details about Cassie and Abigail’s life, as though she were investigating them.

Later that day Martha meets with Cassie and Sam at the Grey House and shows them a music box that contains three hidden compartments for three different gems. One of the gems is an emerald. Cassie possesses a heart-shaped ruby that fits into one of the compartments, but there still one gem missing that Martha has planned on finding.

Abi shows up at Donovan’s (Marc Bendavid) office with Chinese food. She suggests he open the fortune cookies first, but is shocked by the message they get: “Your heart will break but you just keep living day after day after terrible day.”

Stephanie (Kylee Evans) and her business partner Lisa (Courtney Deelen) discuss the price of bread has seemingly increased recently. Lisa suggests that they might switch vendors, but Stephanie doesn’t seem to agree with it. Lisa also starts to discuss the plans she has for the food truck. Judging by Stephanie’s face, they are not exactly aligned about the future of the business.

Joy walks around the Grey House taking pictures when she is caught by Cassie. Joy once again compliments her about the house and Cassie explains that besides she did a lot of work on it and that it has been in her family for years. She also informs her that The Merriwicks founded the town, so Joy tells her that it is clear her roots run deep. Cassie takes the chance to ask about hers but Joy only says that her mother died when she was seventeen years old and she’s been on her own ever since. Cassie confesses her that her parents also died in a car accident to which Joy replies that she didn’t mention how her mother died. Cassie apologizes for her mistake and Joy says that it wasn’t exactly a mistake. It seems they have a few things in common.

Marta meets with Mr. Vandercleef (Andy Yu) to close the deal on the Roger Davenport’s house, but is surprised when she is advised that the deal cannot be closed yet since she needs to go through a bidding war with another potential buyer. That buyer turns to be none other than Dottie Davenport (Paula Boudreau).

Stephanie pays a visit to Cassie and tells her about her current situation with Lisa. Cassie advises her to listen to her and give her a chance. She also says that maybe a change of perspective might be good for her. Sam seeks Adam’s (Scott Cavalheiro) opinion on the gift he got for Cassie, which is a bracelet. Adam agrees with how pretty the gift is but when Sam tells him what Cassie gave him, he recommends he get her something bigger.

Abi visits Cassie and tells her about the message of her “misfortune cookie.” Cassie tells her that “the road might be rocky, but the key is to find joy on the journey.” Also, she recommends not to blame it all on the curse. While they are talking Cassie is unpacking a batch of Victor Hugo novels that she ordered and is surprised to find one that doesn’t belong there. When she opens it, she finds a note from the library. It seems it was borrowed from there and that the book has been overdue for twenty years!

Stephanie returns to the food truck and tells Lisa that she realized that her opinions are as important as hers so she will now be taking her thoughts into account. Joy shows up at Abi’s flower shop. She looks at a picture of Abi on her phone and walks straight to a bouquet of flowers nearby. Abi approaches her and wonders her what she is looking for. Joy asks for chocolate. Abi gives her one and Joy rejects it explaining she doesn’t like the raspberry. She asks for a hazelnut cream chocolate instead.

Sam goes to the store where he bought the bracelet for Cassie and tells the saleswoman (Jhene Erwin) that he wants to return it. She suggests he add matching earrings, but he doesn’t seem quite convinced. Joy pays a visit to Martha and introduces herself as the woman that will renovate her new house, but the Mayor lets her know that it might not be possible since she is sure she has lost it. Joy “strangely” guesses that Martha is in the middle of a bidding war and suggests she write something that comes straight from her heart about why she deserves to have that house.

Abi shows up at Middleton’s library to return a book she has kept for two months and finds Donovan there looking for a book as well. He mentions that the message of the fortune cookie left him thinking, so he started to do some research and found that Great Expectations was the right book for him. Strangely as it seems, that is the book that Abi has attempted to return. He opens it and finds a Davenport seal on it.

Sam and Cassie make some pasta together when suddenly Nick shows up and explains that he returned home since he needs to complete a project for his game design class and needed some peace and quiet. Cassie says that she assumes that not only the dorms but his new girlfriend was a distractor as well, so he ends up confessing that he is dating a girl named Stella and that he is truly happy.

Donovan and Abi visit Dottie as an attempt to find out the owner of the book they just found. Dottie tells them that the owner must be Roger Davenport since it was known that he found comfort in novels right after he was heartbroken by Abi’s ancestor Patience.

Joy walks around the house and finds a silver teapot with the name “Elizabeth Merriwick” on it. George (Peter MacNeill) shows up and explains that the tea pot was one of Elizabeth’s wedding gifts and also informs her that her picture is above the fireplace. Joy asks him what was the reason that brought him to Cassie and Sam’s life, but he answers that he is not sure if they picked him or if he picked them. However, he believes that it was fate that brought them together.

Stephanie asks Adam to buy a Montecristo from her own food truck in order to find out if her decision of changing the bread vendor was right. Sadly, she realizes it was not. Martha is reading the letter she wrote about the house outloud when Dottie arrives to her office and hears everything. She suggests she back off from the bid since she believes that the only thing that would convince Mr. Vandercleef is the number of zeros in the check.

Joy is still walking around the Grey House and suddenly a notebook drops from the shelf. She picks it up and opens it. She is surprised to find out that it is actually a diary. She walks away with the notebook and meets with Abi who asks her about her interview with Martha. They exchange a brief chat when Abi goes to the kitchen where she meets with Cassie. She tells her that her new guest is playing with both of them, but Cassie says Joy will “tell them when she is ready.”

Martha meets with Joy at Roger’s mansion to find some inspiration to complete her letter. They embark on a ride around the house in the search of it. Stephanie is worried to see that there are no clients at her food truck, but Lisa says to wait for at least a week to see the real results of their recent business decisions. Stephanie tells her that in Middleton, unlike some other places, work troubles travel fast, so they don’t need to wait that long to know.

Sam enters the kitchen where he finds Nick who is staring with concern at his laptop. Sam realizes that he’s looking at a jewelry website and the guy confesses that he wants to buy something nice for his girlfriend Stella for their three-month anniversary. Sam tells him that giving her something expensive doesn’t exactly makes it special. So, he asks him how he and Stella met and what made them feel something. It seems like listening to his son’s answer gives him a new idea for his anniversary gift for Cassie.

Abi and Donovan pay a visit to Roger’s mansion in order to gather more information about the curse. They go in search of the library and Abi confesses that she feels kind of lost, but Donovan says that “at least they are lost together.” They finally find the room where the library had been placed as well as some footprints that lead exactly to the spot where Great Expectations had been taken from. They place it back and a door opens. It leads them to another room where they find Martha and Joy who made their way in through the pantry but didn’t know how to get out after the door closed. Martha’s phone alarm beeps and she knows that her time to complete the letter she was supposed to give to Mr. Vandercleef has run out. Right that moment Dottie and Mr. Vandercleef walk in and he expresses his surprise about the room since he hadn’t seen it before. He is even more surprised when he sees a Stradivarius violin and tells them that there are only six hundred of those around the world. Abi takes the chance and says that he should thank Martha for it since it was her who found the room. The man expresses that he would do more than that, so he congratulates her on being the new owner of the Roger Davenport’s house much to Dottie’s surprise. Joy says they should celebrate about her getting the house and Martha also congratulates her on her new job as Joy has been officially hired.

Lisa goes to Cassie’s store looking for a remedy for her headache. She shares a conversation with her where Cassie encourages her to continue with her blog as well as recommending the crėme brûlée oil for her headache.

Back at Martha’s new house Martha, Joy, Donovan and Abi are still exploring the library. Joy suggests they should keep the room as it is since it seems to be the soul of the house. Donovan asks Martha if she would sell him the desk since he believes it would look good in his office. He opens one of the drawers and finds an old letter written by Roger. A part of it says: “If true love completely breaks the heart the curse is sealed and chant apart” and while the others seem to be confused about it, Martha realizes something.

Sam takes Cassie to a lake house to celebrate their anniversary and suddenly they find themselves going through the same scenery they were in when they first met. Stephanie shares some time with Adam at the bistro. He leaves and then Lisa walks in. Stephanie thanks her for the blog she wrote about her. Lisa tells her that despite having enjoyed the food truck adventure she feels her blog needs her. Therefore, she will no longer be her partner. Martha takes Donovan and Abi to her office and shows them the music box she has kept in her hidden safe. They let the music play as Martha recites Roger’s words. The music box opens and they find the Middleton’s heart with a crack on it! Abi says that the curse will stay.

In the meantime, Joy, who has been recording her conversations with Cassie and Abi, is listening to the one where Cassie tells her about the Grey House while reading the diary she found. Cassie and Sam are still enjoying their anniversary when the man says that he has one more surprise for her. He takes her outside and brings a couple of paper lanterns to honor their “paper anniversary.” He lets them go into the sky.
