“Rise and shine nightwalker nation. If it were your aim to get my attention I’d say you were widely successful. I’m now singularly focused on your impending suffering,” Klaus (Joseph Morgan) announces as he presents the coin and orders the person who took his daughter’s mother to show their face. “Don’t look to me for help. You all lost your chance to trade loyalty for protection,” Marcel tells the vampire, who Klaus holds by the window to burn to a crisp. Greta (Nadine Lewington) appears “It’s me you’re looking for.  I think we should talk,” she says.

Klaus takes her back to the catacombs where he tortures her for information on Hayley’s location. Greta tells Klaus that they have a friend in common. “I don’t blame you for forgetting.  It was a long time ago. Spring, 1933.”

August Müller (Jamie Thomas King) is talking about art while Klaus mocks August’s talent. Elijah (Daniel Gillies) enters the café and reunites with the brother he hasn’t seen in thirteen years.

In the present, Greta asks Klaus whether he remembers August now.  She tells him that August was the touchstone for everything she believes in and the reason she took sweet Hayley.

Meanwhile, it looks like Elijah didn’t die when he opened the curtains.  Maybe it’s because he is an Original and they can only be killed by a White Oak stake. Anyway, he talks with Antoinette (Jaime Murray) about how liberating it is to have the daylight ring off. As they are kissing, Antoinette notices that they are being watched and wonder whether it’s Elijah’s family at work again.

Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) shows Freya (Riley Voelkel) how fit and limber she is and comments how much better she’ll be once she triggers her werewolf side. Freya asks her niece whether Hayely ever talked with Hope about how it feels to turn into a wolf for the first time; the crushing and breaking of bones is less than appealing to Freya. Not to mention the killing of a human part adds Hope. But Hope is determine to embrace all that she is, which includes both sides of her family tree.

Greta is telling Klaus how much of a threat his daughter is; Hope has a defect that can make hybrids.  Greta thinks that once they get rid of Hope’s wolf side, they’ll stop her from creating abominations.  Greta gives Klaus a choice: Hope’s werewolf side or her mother’s well-being?

Back in 1933, Elijah talks with Klaus about Mikael. Elijah’s father has no idea where Klaus is and also how Rebekah is safely in Mystic Falls with someone named Stefan.

In the present, Klaus admits to Marcel that August was responsible for killing many wolves. Klaus refuses to give into Greta’s demands.

At the Salvatore School, Hope is surprised to find Roman (Jedidiah Goodacre) in her room. She asks why Roman is so interested in her. He admits that her lineage fascinates him. Hope says that unless Roman tells her something about himself, she’ll go to Alaric and tell him about him breaking and entering into her room. Roman tells Hope how he once pissed a few dangerous people off and ended up desiccated in a cave where he played out the first sixteen non painful years of his life.

When Josh (Steven Krueger) brings nourishment to Greta, Marcel pulls him aside.  Josh is hoping that showing some kindness to Greta will convince her to release Hayley. But Marcel warns Josh against choosing the wrong side.

Antoinette tells Elijah that the person who sent the photographer who took their picture is connected to her past. Back in 1933, August is bragging about killing the wolves when Elijah grabs him by the throat and tells August that he is a rut that he (Elijah) will destroy. August tells his daughter Antoinette to come along. In the present, Elijah can’t believe that Antoinette was keeping the secret from him for seven years that they had met each other before. Antoinette admits that if she told Elijah the truth before, he would have left her.

Marcel tells Josh that the problem with his (Marcel) relationship with Klaus is that he thinks they are partners, but Klaus believes that Marcel is pledging allegiance to the king (Klaus). Marcel had called Freya and told her about Greta’s demands.  So, Hope has decided to bind that part of herself that would trigger her werewolf nature.  Since Hope is part of the reason her mother was taken, she’ll do what she has to get her back. Hope asks her Aunt Freya to get whatever she needs because she is doing this. After Freya leaves to get the supplies, Roman appears again and Hope asks him a favor.  She tells him that there is this thing that she has to do that might not end well. “I might die today and there are a few things I needed to get off my bucket list,” Hope says as she kisses Roman.  It is her first kiss.

In 1933, Klaus shows Elijah the wolves that August killed. Klaus accuses Elijah of standing idle while Mikael tortured and beaten him for his werewolf side. Elijah tells Klaus that he would never stand by and watch his brother suffer. “Next time you have word that Mikael is on my trail do us both a favor and let him come,” Klaus tells Elijah before storming out.

Freya performs the spell to bind Hope’s werewolf nature and tells her that she will have to be branded in order for it to work and she can’t pass out.   But Klaus arrives just in time to stop Freya from binding his daughter. He tells Hope that he will not let his past become her future. “This ends now,” Klaus says.

Antoinette admits that she knew who Elijah was the first time she saw him but she also fell in love with him. In 1933, Antoinette and Elijah talk. “I’m not my father’s daughter.  I don’t share his hatred. He can’t be reasoned with,” Antoinette says. Elijah tells Antoinette that her father is a monster and it’s only a matter of time before he turns that hatred on her. In the present, Antoinette tells Elijah that she abandoned her father’s code because it has brought her peace. She wants to spend her life with Elijah and says that she will be upstairs packing if he chooses to come with her.

Klaus tells Marcel that he will give Greta her greatest nightmare by making hybrids.  He has abducted people and has a pint of Hope’s blood.  He feeds the blood to a woman he took from the bayou and tells her after she goes out into the world tell everyone that Greta Sienna is responsible for her fate. Meanwhile, Greta breaks free of her bonds and starts fighting Josh telling him that she is much stronger than anyone ever imagined.

“Hey you didn’t die, that’s pretty cool. What happened?” Roman asks Hope when she returns to the Salvatore School.  Hope answers that she realized that she’s on her own as far as getting her mother back and all she had to do was lose a part of who she is; she has three, how hard could it be? Roman suggests that he knows some witches that could help.  All they need to do is break out of school.

Klaus apologizes to Marcel for his earlier words; like the best part of Marcel is when he is with Rebekah, the same holds true for Klaus as Elijah is his anchor. Klaus admits that he wasn’t entirely blameless for what happened to August a hundred years ago. Although August got what he deserved, Klaus tells Marcel that most of the people he killed that night were innocent. Some were guilty of the same hatred that afflicted August but most were just victims of that part of Klaus’ nature that he sought to repress. “In the end, I was the match that lit the fuse,” Klaus tells Marcel. Greta had picked up the coin and begged for mercy for her daughter (Antoinette).  Klaus tells Marcel that his biggest mistake was that he had humiliated them and in doing so empowered them with the most strongest form of hate. “I gifted them shame,” Klaus tells Marcel.  “Please, mercy for my son,” Greta begged Klaus.  We see that her son is Roman!

“Hey it’s me.  Just letting you know that everything is cool here.  I’m getting in the car and Hope Mikaelson is coming with me.  I love you mom,” Roman says as he leaves a message on Greta’s cell phone. Hope arrives and Roman says “Let’s do this.” So it looks like Roman’s interest in Hope Mikaelson is to get revenge for what her father Klaus did to his family and people almost a century ago. Will the Mikaelsons find out Roman’s connection to Greta and save Hope before it’s too late?  Or will Greta and her family have the ultimate revenge against Klaus?
