The Weeks – Inside the Covers

Q) How would you best describe your sound?

A) Rock first and foremost, with hints of soul and blues. I just like to say it’s something you can dance to.

Q) What made you all did you decide to record your new covers album Inside the Covers?

A) We never really do covers, but fans have been asking for us to cover different songs for years. We figured during this pandemic, doing these livestream shows, that it might be fun and made sense to do a show of covers to give the fans some of the songs they’ve always wanted.

Q) How did you choose the songs that would go on the album?

A) These are just a lot of songs that we as a band have always enjoyed, not to play necessarily, but just to listen to. It gave us a chance to experiment a little and get out of our normal schtick.

Q) Are you able to tease some cover songs tossed around that didn’t get featured this time?

A) We had a few songs that we cut because we just felt that they weren’t on par with some of the others. The good thing is that when you’re covering songs, especially ones you like, regardless of if you ever play it live or not, it’s still fun just to sing a song you love.

Q) Which song was your favorite to record and why?

A) One of my favorites was probably “List of Demands” by Saul Williams. Mostly because of the powerful message and because the cadence of the song is so intense and driving. There’s barely a second to take a breath and lyrically it’s just a wonderful song.

Q) What do you hope fans take away from the album?

A) I just hope it makes people happy. We enjoyed the hell out of making it and we wanted to give everyone something different from us, especially during a year when everything has seemed very much the same day in and day out for us all.

Q) If you had to pick which one is more difficult, would it be performing your original music or covering a song from another artist?

A) It’s really hard to compare the two. Covers can prove very difficult just because it’s someone else’s material. It’s something that came from their heart, so, of course, you really want to do it justice.

Q) In 2020 you took to doing livestream shows for your fans. What were the benefits and drawbacks of performing livestream shows?

A) It’s now been over a year since we’ve played a live show, so the benefits of a livestream are playing a show when the alternative is playing nothing at all. Putting on a show with no audience in our basement will never feel the same as the real thing, but it’s been a nice outlet when there aren’t other options.

Q) With concerts currently on hold, what do you miss most about performing live?

A) The silence is pretty deafening when you finish a song to no applause. But aside from that, I really miss interacting with fans on a nightly basis and traveling with the band.

Q) What artists and albums are you currently listening to?

A) We listen to a little bit of everything. Recently we’ve been listening to things like Mall Rat, Smino, Spill Tab and Diggable Planets. I’ve always been a huge fan of The Hold Steady and my brother and I have actually watched several of their livestreams during this time and really enjoyed it.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of your music?

A) We will be back as soon as we can be. Thanks for supporting us during this weird year. We will rage together again and make up for the year we all missed.
