Top 3 Moments – 3/10 – 3/15
By: Malasha Parker
Each week I’ll be picking the best drama, comedy, and sci-fi/fantasy moments from the shows of the prior week. They may sometimes be equipped with some of your favorite ships or tear-jerking moments, so keep reading if you are still not over what happened on your favorite TV show this week!
Drama: New Amsterdam, “King of Swords” – “I guess time will tell.”
This week’s episode put me in all my “Sharpwin” feels! Out of all the great moments in this episode, one scene especially stood out. After a day of listening to the clairvoyant, Marlene (Denise Burse), discuss how Max (Ryan Eggold) may be on the verge of losing Helen (Freema Agyeman) it seems Marlene has a moment where she isn’t sure she was right about everything she revealed to them. Now that the show has officially addressed the amazing chemistry between Max and Helen, it makes Marlene’s comment give us so much to think about. Is she right about everything she said being wrong? Will some of it happen, but in a different way? The look that Max casts Helen’s way is enough to tell us that he is still worried about their future together. Marlene gave both of them her premonitions at different times in slightly different ways. So, their worried looks after she says, “I guess time will tell,” is extremely telling. Max takes advantage of his friendship with Helen and struggles to take her advice when it comes to her being his doctor. Helen hearing that she has a “vibe” with Max throughout the episode doesn’t make her more confident in where she stands in how she feels about their relationship by the time this particular moment comes around. I am so ready to see the conversation between these two in the next episode. Eggold’s and Agyeman’s performances continue to shine throughout every episode, so the future scenes between the two are sure to be nail-biting. How will they move forward from here?
Comedy: Brooklyn Nine-Nine, “Gintars” – Jake helps a tad too much.
Nikolaj’s (Antonio Raul Corbo) birth father Gintars (Ike Barinholtz) seeks out Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) to get his son back. After helping Boyle try to cope with the developing relationship between Gintars and Nikolaj, Jake (Andy Samberg) attempts to get rid of Gintars by getting him arrested so that he would be deported. Boyle pointing out how Jake should have never gotten too involved in the first place was a great moment. Although Boyle asked for help Jake needed to be held accountable for what he did, even if it was out of the goodness of his heart. I understand he was just trying to help, but making the decision to get Gintars deported without even consulting Boyle first was not his place. The moment also brought in some funny banter about where butts should and should not be. I enjoyed watching these two throughout the episode and I’m glad Boyle had a chance to say what he had to say about Jake’s intervening.
Sci-fi/Fantasy: American Gods, “House on the Rock” – The gathering of the gods.
American Gods has returned with all of its glorious visual effects. I absolutely love this show – not only because of its writing, but because of how beautiful it is to watch. The first episode of Season 2 did not hold back on its special effects either. The scene where the gods convene to discuss how the new gods are taking over was one of the most alluring moments of television I’ve seen in a while. I was in awe of how the gods lit up in this scene. Even when you get confused on what may be happening on this show, you can always depend on the special effects to reel you back in. The set design also added to how well this scene looked and played out. The specific movements by the actors – like when Bilquis (Yetide Badaki) turns around and her features begin to come to life – is an excellent example of how the actors also helped the special effects be even more mesmerizing.
