VÉRITÉ – New Limbs: Volume 1
By: Jennifer Vintzileos
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Driving, dynamic alternative pop music.
Q) Who are your greatest musical influences?
A) I grew up listening to The Cranberries, The Breeders, Fiona Apple and No Doubt. Strong female voices have influenced mine.
Q) Tell us the story behind the song “Younger Women.”
A) I lost a relationship with someone I loved. “Younger Women” is the moment of anger you feel when it’s perfectly blended with the grief. It was written and produced in quarantine when I was alone, processing all of my feelings.
Q) You also recently released a video for “Younger Women.” What was the inspiration behind the video?
A) The lyric video is a literal interpretation of lost love and grief. A wedding dress in a cemetery felt appropriate. Plus, I didn’t have “wardrobe” because of COVID so I wore my mother’s wedding dress.
Q) Which song on New Limbs: Volume 1 is most personal to you?
A) “I’ll Take the Blame” is very close to my heart and hard for me to listen to. It’s too close.
Q) You wrote New Limbs: Volume 1 during the pandemic. Did this affect the overall message that you wished to convey through the album?
A) I think quarantine and isolation forced me to process some things and there was no escaping myself. I think that inner dialogue is obvious throughout.
Q) What do you hope fans will take away from New Limbs: Volume 1?
A) I want to show people more angles of myself without worrying about fitting into a box. I don’t fit a genre or a group or a tone. I want to show people it’s okay to experiment and become more of yourself as you grow as a person and/or an artist.
Q) As New Limbs: Volume 1 is being released on October 9th, will there be a virtual listening party with the release of the new album?
A) I believe so. We’re working on a live streamed performance and a separate, interactive listening party. I’m trying to find ways to bring people into my world even though we’re all distanced and apart.
Q) How did being able to write a new album during the pandemic help you?
A) I showed myself I am very capable of doing things myself that I previously believed I needed other people for. I think that injection of confidence in my own capabilities has been life changing for me.
Q) You have done a lot of independent production on your music. What are the benefits of being able to produce on music you create?
A) Autonomy and freedom. You don’t need to rely as heavily on someone else to interpret your vision if you are handing them a well written map with built structures and paths. It makes collaboration so much easier.
Q) As an independent singer-songwriter, what are some of the biggest challenges that women face in the entertainment industry?
A) I think women apologize too much, don’t ask for enough credit, money and opportunity and fall into the roles that we are trained to play. I’m trying to actively restructure my mind to be less apologetic about taking up my own space.
Q) Tell us one of your favorite live performance moments.
A) I played a show and forgot the lyrics to one of my songs. A girl in the front row was singing every lyric, so I passed her the mic and she declined and got really nervous and I yelled “fuck it” and the audience sang the verse for me. I love moments on stage where I get to be very human. It’s humbling.
Q) What do you miss most about performing live?
A) Bringing something beautiful to others in a shared space.
Q) Who would you love to collaborate with in the future?
A) James Blake, please.
Q) What would you like to say to fans & supporters of your music?
A) I owe you my career and you give me a purpose.
