WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
“Anthology” is a dramedy series that follows six 20-somethings as they try to navigate life in New York City. Throughout the course of one summer each character goes through a life-altering event as they find themselves. The show’s first season was released in 2013, so this really was years in the making and I love that the creators were dedicated to continuing their story. Described as “a BIPOC-fueled series with a diverse cast and crew,” I couldn’t wait to check this one out.
Ashley R. (Ashley Denise Robinson), Reid (Brian Edelman), Devina (Ashley Denise), Will (William Louis Smith), Ricki (Ricki Lynée) and John (Jonathan Duran) make up the cast of struggling millennials trying to make their place in this world. From on and off again romance to burgeoning careers to dodging responsibilities and fighting self-doubt, “Anthology” depicts amazing journeys for each of its characters. A classic millennial drama that for once puts people of color at the forefront and doesn’t shy away from the serious issues they’re facing. It’s refreshing, all too rare and just one of the many reasons the ladies of Nuanse Entertainment are so successful.
The stellar ensemble cast plays off each other brilliantly with the added challenge of having no actual script to work from. To bring the most authentic narrative to light, the story is based on an outline with the performers improvising the dialogue. Improv in general is difficult, but long-form improv on this scale is certainly not for the faint of heart. The actors are able to capture pure moments of authenticity without being held to the confines of a traditional script. The cast never seems to be searching for the right words to say and instead they go with what’s natural, creating a story so rooted in truth you’ll feel like you know these characters personally. The laughing and arguments, everything feels so real. I felt like I saw a part of myself in each one of these characters. As a 20-something myself, I think it’d be impossible not to relate to them and I can’t wait to see more of their stories unfold.
New episodes come out every Friday, with four currently available to watch now. If you’re a fan of a solid drama series or you’re also trying to form your own path in life, I highly recommend giving this series a watch. You’ll laugh and you’ll cry, but you won’t regret coming along for the ride.
