WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
Bounce Houses and Baseball Cards is a dramedy web series about two contrasting brothers, Roscoe (Stephen Bond) and Frank (Connor Wilkins), who are forced to face things together after the loss of their father. Frank is the responsible younger brother, working as a bank teller and begging his older brother to get it together and finally grow up. Roscoe is currently working as a clown and even that is too difficult of a task for him. Yet he’s still convinced he can start his own business, if only he had a bounce house to rent out.
The news of their father’s death hits them both very differently. While Frank seems genuinely upset, Roscoe hides any potential pain behind humor and ill-timed jokes. The success of the series is truly in their relationship. Watching Frank’s constant annoyance when it comes to Roscoe’s inability to take anything seriously, including their father’s passing, really made me feel like I was watching two real-life brothers. They’re both dealing with grief in their own way and slowly but surely you see why Roscoe is the way he is, especially in regards to their father.
Baseball cards are a big element of the series, a Bobby Bonilla rookie card as well as an old Bonilla highlight a memory Roscoe holds dear. Their father also left his older son a baseball card, a Rickey Henderson rookie card, with a note attached. As a fan of the sport myself, it was the mention of baseball cards in the title that originally intrigued me, so it was great to see the hobby of card collecting discussed throughout the series.
Bounce Houses and Baseball Cards is a short five-episode series and each episode is only about five minutes long, but definitely worth checking out. The simplicity of the series really helps it shine. There are no over the top bells and whistles, just two actors playing off each other with a natural chemistry between them guiding the story in a great direction. And also baseball.
