WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
Hospital Show is a show within a show. Viewers follow the cast and crew of serialized drama “Critical Condition” throughout their own personal dramas. Former med school student and current number two on the call sheet Charlie (Sara Canning) is the show’s moral center and at times the only sane one in the room. As one of the stars and the medical specialist on staff, the fact that she may be potentially leaving the show is the main driving force of the first season.
There are at least a handful of medical dramas on television at any given time, so it’s fun to see a comedy showcase what goes on behind the scenes. One of the jokes in the pilot revolves around the difficult pronunciation of a medical term, something I’m sure happens very often on sets today. And Charlie, as Dr. Grace on “Critical Condition,” brings a patient back to life solely with an emotional speech complete with bizarre metaphors. The series playfully pokes fun at the ever popular medical dramas, using the emergency room cliches that always seem to work in fictional hospitals. Another behind the scenes gag includes Will (played by writer-director Adam Greydon-Reid) brushing up on his suture skills for an upcoming surgery scene – it involves bananas, sewing needles and lots of blood.
Hospital Show thrives partially because of smart writing that expertly satirizes hospital dramas and larger than life creative types and because of the chemistry of the cast. They all play off each other perfectly and there always feels like a rich history behind the characters. The highlights are Charlie and Rich (Adrian Holmes) who have such a friendly and easy rapport it looks like they’ve been doing this all their lives, a testament to how well Canning and Holmes play off each other. Every time they refer to each other as Number One and Number Two, because of their orders on the call sheet, you can’t help but feel the love. Rich also calls on Charlie for her medical expertise, something I can’t give away.
If you’ve ever been a fan of a medical show, you like entertainment industry comedies or you’re just looking for a quick episode to make you smile, you’ll love Hospital Show. New episodes are released every Thursday, with half of the ten episode first season currently available for all binge watching needs.
