WHAT? Scrap of Success

BY: Rosie Holden and Daniel Graham

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Scrap of Success is a brand-new web series following aspiring actors Ruth “Raz” Piles (Rosie Holden) and Berwyn “Daz” Pugh (Daniel Graham) as they try to make it big in the world of musical theater. The show, and their journey, is told from the perspective of the couple’s newest venture into YouTube; the first episode of the series is also Raz and Daz’s first crack at filming a vlog for their channel. Each episode details an aspect of the entertainment industry from the always nerve-wracking networking to the importance of health and skin care.

Piles and Graham play off of each other beautifully and their easy chemistry really carries the show. Just like actual YouTube vloggers, it’s the personality they bring to their characters and their relationship that keeps you coming back for more. The constant interaction with their “audience” makes it even easier to connect with them. They could be interested in any future career and I’d find Raz and Daz’s journey to success entertaining – they’re that engaging. But their big Broadway dreams provide the perfect goal for these two dramatic stars who long for the glory of fame.

The episodes are short and sweet, making watching the entire series’ first season an inevitability for me. They’re filled with funny jokes that actors and creators will especially appreciate, like Daz’s ridiculous stage name: Darren Bartholomew Killingforth. There are even jokes that millenials in general can relate to like Raz accidentally liking a post on Facebook then deactivating her account over it. If you’re a dreamer, you will certainly love this one.

Scrap of Success is just downright a good time. It’s a fun little series that puts a creative spin on the usual show about the actors’ trope. The finale of the first season ends in a way that leaves you wanting more and got a genuine gasp out of me. It was something I didn’t see coming at all and I welcomed the unexpected tension — that I imagine will be touched on in the next season. Luckily, the second season of the series is set to premiere this coming Monday, August 5th, so it’s the perfect time to catch up.
