Web Series Wednesday – SK & J

WHAT? SK & J
BY: Jenn Liu & Susan-Kate Heaney
WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
From the brilliant minds of Jenn Liu and Susan-Kate Heaney comes a comedy about their personal experience working side by side as they try and make it in the entertainment industry. Their opposing personalities lead them to butting heads over basically everything and they do it in the most hilarious way possible. Both actresses also split the directing and editing duties.
After they performed a horrible so-called experimental theater piece at NYU, where Susan-Kate gave birth to what I can only assume was a McDouble, the two aspiring thespians decided to join forces to start writing their own material. The short, six-episode series tells the story of their journey throughout pitching and workshopping their script, complete with an all too accurate table read and an old-fashioned standoff over comma usage.
As someone who’s both studied acting and has attempted to write something with a friend, not only did this series hit super close to home but it was so realistic I couldn’t stop laughing. Only someone who went to art school would use the phrase, “I’m trained in the Alexander Technique.”
Anyone who loves a good “opposites attract” story or buddy comedy will enjoy SK & J. The way they clash with each other over the smallest things is only something that would happen with people who love each other, but secretly want to kill each other on a daily basis. Between Susan-Kate’s oddball behavior and Jenn’s inability to be wrong about anything, there’s never a dull moment.
One of the real shining episodes of the series is one simply entitled “Comma,” which shows both women sitting in front of their computer screen debating whether or not a comma is beneficial or a hindrance to a line. Their inner thoughts are expressed via voice-over during the disagreement and if anyone who watches it tries to deny having the exact same thoughts, I wouldn’t believe them, especially once a certain phrase plants a song in one of their heads.
The episodes are short, but concise and I was amazed at how easily they could tell an entire story in a matter of minutes. The series is unique, and I can genuinely say I haven’t seen anything quite like this before. I’m secretly a J, posing as an SK, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
