WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Stormborn is a science fiction adventure series about Kierra (Joanna Reardon), a teen girl who’s taken from her troubled home life and thrown into a galaxy at war. Orphaned when she was young, Kierra mysteriously remembers the language of the people who capture her. There is a bounty on her head, so perhaps there’s a destiny for her she’s not aware of herself. Will she reach it or will the Imperium get to her first?

Kierra goes from a clueless girl play fighting for fun to a place where her life is at stake. She’s easy to root for, as she takes her hero’s journey and uncovers more about the world around her. In constant danger, her life always seems to be on the line. And in true adventure fashion, she escapes it only by the skin of her teeth with the help of those she meets along the way. My favorite was Lianna (Elizabeth Staneart), a swordsmith who makes a deal with Kierra at the start of her journey. They play off each other well and it’s a classic case of seemingly lone wolves only pairing up because they have to. They share an especially sweet and profound moment in the fourth episode, “To Be a Knight,” that I’d consider one of the best non-combat scenes in the entire show.

The series itself is wildly entertaining; a solid independent production, complete with a rich storyline, epic fight scenes and a swelling musical score. But that’s not the only thing the creatives at Brightsword Productions have to offer. In addition to their original web series, their YouTube channel includes two behind the scenes series as well. The first takes you behind the scenes of filming – showing rehearsals, setting up shots and the great work of director Jon Brewer. The second focuses on the details that helped create the world of the show through costumes and prop design. Just this week they released a very interesting episode showing how the weapons were made and the materials they used.

If you’re a fan of adventure movies and shows, sci-fi or fantasy you need to check out Stormborn and join the adventure. The crew at Brightsword Productions invented a vast new world and weaved a beautiful story within it. It’s like “Star Trek” meets “The 100” and it is definitely worth the watch.
