Young and Hungry – Young And Mexico Part 1
By: Sammi Turano
The show opens with Sofia (Aimee Carrero) binging on junk food. Gabi (Emily Osment) walks in talking about how great life is and her amazing afternoon with Josh.
Sofia is in a bad mood and says she didn’t work because it was a holiday for her. Gabi wishes her a Cinco de Mayo, but Sofia says that’s not the holiday as it isn’t even Mayo. Gabi is confused until Sofia says it is her birthday.
Gabi completely forgot it was her friend/roommate’s birthday. She covers by saying her weekend plans are surprising Sofia with a trip to Mexico. Sofia is in a better mood and Gabi keeps up the charade, saying that she was tricking Sofia by pretending she forgot her birthday.
Elliot (Rex Lee) and Yolanda (Kym Whitley) are in Josh’s (Jonathan Sadowski) house while he has a three-million-dollar painting delivered. The painting is for him and Gabi to admire while he recovers from Lasik eye surgery.
Gabi comes in to tell Josh her plans for the weekend. He guesses that she is taking care of him and she plays along until he catches on that she is lying. She tells him her plans are with Sofia and he wonders who will take care of him over the weekend.
Yolanda and Elliot overhear and quickly sneak out of the room. Gabi offers to change her plans, but he tells her she doesn’t have to, which upsets Yolanda and Elliott, who are listening at the door.
Gabi asks if she can leave now and we get to the next scene with them in Mexico. Sofia is upset that Gabi has been on the phone with Josh the entire time. Gabi says it is because Josh forgot she was going away that weekend.
They go to check in and Gabi tries to convince the hotel representative (Maria Canals-Barrera) that she confirmed yesterday and had made reservations three months ago. Marisol, the checkout girl, says she was begging and crying but Gabi shushes her. While Marisol goes to finish checking her in (with Gabi begging her not to cut up her credit card if it is declined) Gabi goes to call Josh, who is at home with Yolanda and Elliot. He tells her they are happy to take care of them, but it is obvious they are unhappy.
Josh says he is nervous about the surgery, so Gabi tells him to look in Yolanda’s purse where he finds pills. Gabi reminds him she has to take care of Sofia this weekend since she would be a bitch if the roles were reversed. Sofia overhears and calls Gabi a bitch, figuring out that Gabi forgot her birthday. Gabi covers and tells her that she was just saying how she would react if Sofia forgot her birthday. Sofia figures out the truth and tries to grill Marisol about when the reservation was made. Gabi tells her not to say anything, but Sofia realizes the truth anyway. She is upset and says that Gabi is so wrapped up in Josh and she is left with nobody.
The next day, Gabi wakes up on the couch in the lobby. Marisol is there to get her off of it and reminds her of what happened last night. She also gives her a bunch of ideas on how to make things right with Sofia, but it will cost her nine hundred dollars. Gabi says she can’t afford that, so Marisol says she will help her set up a day at the beach for twenty-two dollars. Marisol calls for JuanCarlo (Jose Moreno Brooks) for help. Gabi takes one look at him and decides to fix him up with Sofia.
At the house, Elliot is helping Josh recover from his surgery. Josh says he will ring a bell if he needs anything. Elliot goes downstairs where Yolanda has food for them…that Gabi made for Josh as a get well gift.
Elliott decides to open the painting, which is what he calls a “she nude” while Yolanda opens an expensive bottle of vodka. Elliot trips and spills pasta on the painting and tries to figure out how he can blame Gabi for it.
At the hotel, Gabi is waiting for Sofia so they can begin their day. Sofia is ready to go home, but Gabi fills her in on her plans for her, which includes her being serenaded with “Happy Birthday.” Sofia is not moved until she sees JuanCarlo. He sings to her and she is immediately smitten—although she says she is hopes they are not related.
JuanCarlo says he has to go back to work but will make a date with her later. However, Gabi offers to do his job, so they can hang out. Sofia and JuanCarlo enjoy drinks and good conversation. He sings to her again and she is even more smitten. They share a kiss.
Yolanda and Elliot try to fix the painting—with spray vodka—when Elliott puts his hand through it. Josh comes downstairs with his vision coming back. They quickly put a towel on it to hide the hole, but he insists on seeing the painting. Elliot puts his face through the hole, but Josh doesn’t realize it. He thinks it is incredible and thinks it is the real deal since it feels like the eyes are following him.
Back in Mexico, Marisol gives Gabi a free drink for fixing her friendship with Sofia. She heard Sofia thanking God very loudly. Sofia and JuanCarlo come back into the lobby. He gives her some gifts and she cannot wait to come home and FaceTime him. Gabi thanks him for saving the day. She sold everything at his stand and gives him the money, along with the one puppet that was left behind. He tells her he can now FaceTime her for a month, but Gabi tells him she will want more time. She comes up with a devious plan, which comes into play in the car on their way back to the states.
Sofia is sad over leaving JuanCarlo behind…but little does she know her man is in the car—hiding in the trunk.
To be continued….
The episode ends with Elliot fixing the painting and Josh running downstairs, saying his vision is back. He falls into the painting but says he will call the insurance company to fix it. Realizing he was supposed to get it insured, Elliot runs out of the room screaming.
Josh asks Yolanda to get him the vodka he had been saving, but she drank it. She runs out screaming and he goes to eat the pasta from Gabi.
