Kelsey (Hilary Duff) watches an interview with former presidential speechwriter Jake Devereux (Jason Ralph) while doing her makeup. Jake talks about being a speechwriter for Obama, saying he now wants to write a memoir instead of going back to DC.

Lauren (Molly Bernard) barges in, saying she applied to celebrity dating app Yara on Kelsey’s behalf and Kelsey got accepted. Kelsey is not as excited, just wanting to finish getting ready, but Josh (Nico Tortorella) and his one night stand Ana (Ana Isabelle) interrupt her as well.

Lauren decides it’s time to set some ground rules for Josh and his revolving door of lady friends. From now on, he has to walk them in and out so they’re not loose in the apartment, and they’re not allowed to drink any of the cold brew. Josh tells Lauren he’s trying to be the guy who’s into hookups and casual sex instead of falling in love all the time. Josh still thinks Liza (Sutton Foster) might be the one, and Lauren says if they’re truly meant to be, nothing will be able to keep them apart.

Kelsey tells Charles (Peter Hermann) about her plans to go after Jake Devereux, but Zane (Charles Michael Davis) wants to snatch him up for Empirical instead. Charles tells them they need to work together instead of competing.

During their meeting, Jake tells Kelsey and Zane about how the president used to beat him at basketball all the time. Kelsey jokes that it couldn’t have damaged his reputation too much considering he still managed to date movie stars after that, but Jake doesn’t want to put that in the memoir. Zane tells him that, regardless, his book is going to be a bestseller if he picks the right publisher. He and Kelsey get a little competitive, giving Jake a lot to think about.

Kelsey and Zane both tell each other they did a good job at the meeting, getting a little flirtatious before going their separate ways. That night, Kelsey opens her Yara app and sees Jake’s profile. She also matches with Zane, and he sends her a message asking her to get a drink. When she says she’s drinking in her room, he asks for her room number.

The two lay in bed together, eating french fries. Jake texts both of them, saying he wants to meet somewhere for breakfast and discuss moving forward. They tell him to pick the place, keeping their texts a secret from each other and assuming they’ve won.

The next morning, they find out Jake has decided he wants to work with both of them, and although they’re hesitant, they agree. Jake also mentions to Kelsey he saw her on Yara, and Kelsey says he saw him too.

Diana (Miriam Shor) tells Liza that People wants to do a feature on Marriage Vacation and Charles and Pauline (Jennifer Westfeldt) getting back together, even wanting to pay for a vow renewal in Hawaii. Charles says that won’t be happening, but it won’t change anything in regards to the book tour. Diana is worried this will spell bad news in terms of promotion for the film, but Charles refuses to live his life according to the novel.

Pauline is frantic and upset about Charles wanting a divorce, but Diana encourages her to postpone the truth until after she makes the bestseller list. Diana tells her it’s just a matter of changing verb tenses when talking to the press, ordering her to practice. Pauline talks about how Charles leaves her sticky note poems in the book she’s reading and how they make love outside their cabin every summer, sobbing when she realizes she’ll never have that again.

Liza finds Charles in the office, telling him how sorry she is to hear about Pauline. She promises she’s here for them whenever he needs help, and Charles says they should get together after the book tour since they have a lot to talk about.

Pauline does a reading at a temple. Afterwards, dozens of ladies line up to ask her questions. She stumbles when asked what it was like to get back together with her husband, but Liza and Diana motion for her to smile and say what they rehearsed. During a one-on-one Skype interview, she breaks down crying when lying about how good her sex life is.

Charles asks Diana how Pauline is doing on the book tour, and Diana admits she’s unhinged and still pretending they’re together. Charles apologizes for making Diana’s job harder, and Diana suggests he go to the event in her place. He wouldn’t be supporting her lie—he would just be supporting her.

Pauline is stressed before her next Q&A, but Liza gives her reassurance. Much to Liza’s annoyance, the moderator picks someone in the audience who asks how things are working out between her and Charles. Pauline sees Charles walk in and decides to tell the truth: her marriage was over before she left, and nothing was going to fix it. The book is a fantasy of how she wanted everything to work out, but she knows her own happy ending is still out there.

Charles thanks Pauline for being honest even though it was hard. Pauline shoots back that if she were being truly honest, she would have told everyone it was Charles’ ambition that ruined their marriage and he never knew how unhappy she was because he didn’t want to. Charles apologizes, saying sometimes he’s blind to what’s right in front of him. He looks pointedly at Liza, which immediately tells a furious Pauline that something is going on between them.

When Liza runs after Charles, he asks her who she really is. Liza says that, if he’s asking that, he probably already knows. She says she only lied to get a job, but Charles feels betrayed, saying she’s not the kind of person he wants in his life. From now on, they’re just going to have a professional relationship. Liza thinks it would be better if she just left, but Charles snaps that he thought she did all of this in order to get a job.
