If you were confused by the season premiere of “You’re the Worst” then don’t worry as you weren’t the only one. I checked multiple times to make sure I was watching the right show. The first half of the episode centers around the love story of Jake (Morgan Krantz) and Gemma (Caitlin McGee). These two that bond over a rare art film called The Intransigence of Love after meeting in a video store. Jake finds this movie for her to win her over from her lame boyfriend. After a while of confusion and 90s nostalgia, we finally find out that this was a story that Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash) make up to be their love story. They are telling this story to a wedding planner.

In their version of the story, Jake wins over Gemma for a while, but after they sleep together, she goes back to her boyfriend and leaves Jake. Gretchen and Jimmy then take on the roles in the story. They find each other again years later at a New Year’s Eve party in 2000 and kiss when the ball drops, but then Jimmy’s girlfriend appears. He leaves with her and Gretchen doesn’t chase after him. Her ex-boyfriend from years ago turns to her and tells her to run after him because they are so clearly soulmates. She does not follow Jimmy though and her ex-boyfriend turns out to be gay.

In the future, Gretchen is at a press conference for her first movie, which takes place in Paris. A reporter from the back calls out and asks where she got her first camera from. It turns out that it was from the reporter…who steps out of the light and is none other than Jimmy. She then runs to him and they kiss passionately. Later, they go to watch the movie. As they are leaving, the person they previously stole the movie from finds them. Jimmy’s old friend named Ziggy (Brennan Murray) then jumps into the future to save them.

Back in the 90s, it I revealed Ziggy never existed. Outside of the story, in reality, Gretchen comments on how much she loves a good twist ending. The wedding planners are confused, but still tell them their rates. As their walking out, Gretchen asks if they’re going to go with that wedding planner and Jimmy replies no.
