Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist – Zoey’s Extraordinary Trip
By: Madison Ruby
We continue right where we left off with Zoey (Jane Levy) hanging out with her childhood friend from next door, Aiden (Felix Mallard). She realizes they have led to very different paths in life with Zoey going to college and immediately working and fitting into her adult life while Aiden traveled through Thailand and led life day by day. She then hears Aiden sing “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield and this inspires her to just live her life instead of playing by the rules.
Zoey tells Mo (Alex Newell) about this experience and says she wants to rebel out. She goes to hang out with Aiden again, who brings drugs into play. As we know, Zoey is a little bit more on the safe side and is quite nervous around the idea of it. Trying to play it cool and live her life as “rebellious” as possible, she decides to take the pill Aiden gives her.
Simon (John Clarence Stewart) is dealing with the return of Danny Michael Davis (Noah Weisberg) as the CEO of SPRQ Point, fresh off house arrest. The Chirp is having issues recognizing people of color and Simon, a person of color, has a hard time dealing with the awkwardness surrounding him and Danny’s conversation. Danny then gives Zoey a call, who will be starting her trip any second. She tells him she can’t come in today and will be “busy” for the next eight hours. He insists they talk and finds her location to come to her. Simon then gives her a call to talk about how he is feeling about his talk with Danny and The Chirp having this issue, but as the drugs are about to start kicking in she rushes him off the phone.
Zoey and Aiden are as high as it gets as Danny knocks on the door. Zoey tries to push him away, but as she is grabbing a corduroy pillow like it’s her first time and is clearly paranoid, he realizes the two of them are high. He says he no longer has to take urine tests and to pass over the drugs. The three of them stumble out on the street into a drug-induced adventure where Zoey hears the three of them do an upbeat rendition of Nicki Minaj’s “Starships.”
Meanwhile, Max (Skylar Astin) and Mo’s business is starting to go downhill as investors have pulled out and the article on Max in Wired has been dropped. Max is spending the day with his dad Alan, (Chip Zien), who is a dentist and wants Max to move home and work for him since his current work doesn’t seem to be holding up.
Another situation is also going downhill – Maggie (Mary Steenburgen) and Jenna’s (Jee Young Han) architectural project. Roger (Rob Stewart) seems to be taking the fact that Maggie did not want to go out with him way too personally. Suddenly, the garden she designed is way to “Disneyland” and not what he expected – even though he loved the blueprint. Jenna is angered by this and how he treated Maggie, so she dumps fertilizer in Roger’s car. Maggie is very annoyed with this situation, telling Jenna that her actions were childish. She ends her project with Roger and fires Jenna which creates a big argument between them with a lot of hurtful things thrown around by both of them.
Max and Mo present their business idea to Max’s dad. He doesn’t understand how they’re going to make money and be successful with this type of business idea. As he continues to question their plan, Zoey hear’s Max sing “Numb” by Linkin Park. The new “rebellious” Zoey tries to tell Max maybe if he cares less about what his dad thinks it will hurt less. Max says this is completely hypocritical of her because she cared about her relationship with her dad more than anything and he prefers the old Zoey physiology.
The next day Danny tells Zoey that the talk they had about how they give so much to the universe and still end up having bad experiences made him realize he wants to stop caring about SPRQ Point, meaning he is going to sell it. Zoey, of course, does not want him to do this as it will mean everyone will lose their jobs.
Simon meets up with Mo and the woman who did his interview, Tatiana (Alvina August), as they are both people of color and he wants their opinion on The Chirp situation. Simon doesn’t feel comfortable brushing off what happened as he has to do press for the watch since he is the company spokesperson. He explains that there are barely any people of color at SPRQ Point, none in leadership positions and lack of women as well. He decides to express his opinion in his speech, which could ultimately mean he’ll lose his job but it is what he feels is right. He tells everyone the coding error on the watch is being fixed, but that the real problem is the surrounding environment and lack of diversity. He hopes talking about this now will make a change in the business.
Even though Alan isn’t too sure the restaurant will be successful he decides he is going to give Max the money to invest into it. Max wants him to believe in the idea, but it seems Alan just has the money and wants to give it to him even if it doesn’t work out. Max knows they need the money, but he doesn’t feel right taking it if Alan does not really care about it. He tells Alan money and support aren’t the same thing. Max has always wanted his dad to have faith in him so it is really hard for him to hear that he doesn’t fully think it is a great idea. Max walks away from the deal and decides it is best to not take the money.
At the end of the episode the family is gathered around the dinner table as Maggie deals with her fallout with Jenna and Zoey realizes that Danny might sell the company. They both are very upset and want to talk about their issues. Jenna enters and lets everyone know she is leaving, with no comment from Maggie. Before she goes Maggie stops over to see her and apologize. They make up and Maggie tells Jenna she knows she is going to do great and creative things, but maybe she should be a little bit more ethical. The episode ends on a high note for those two and seemingly down for everyone else.
