Q) Tell us a little bit more your new single “Eat&Drink&Smoke&Shop&Fuck (Kill Rock Stars).”

A) That song was the second single from my upcoming album, New Money, for Kill Rock Stars. We released the first single “Rich and Beautiful in August, then “Eat&Drink&Smoke&Shop&Fuck” in September and we just released the 3rd single from the record in October, called “Here’s To Us.” It’s been really fun to have the label release songs and videos ahead of the full album release in January.

Q) How did you come up with the concept for the video?

A) I always think it’s hilarious to juxtapose high fashion Gucci looks and Tiffany jewelry with gay punk street imagery. I wanted the video to feel like a janky sex livestream or snuff film or something. The entire vibe of that song is debauchery and feeling trapped in the house while the world goes away around me, so there are a lot of flashes of cake and cigarettes and booze and, well…outfits.

Q) This song marks your return to the dancefloor. What makes now the right time for you to put yourself back out there?

A) Yeah, this whole record is meant to be a welcome back to the dancefloor for all of us, after so long of being apart. When I was writing these songs it was the middle of the first wave of lockdowns and I couldn’t even picture what that might look like in the new world. I leaned into that, and this album is the result.

Q) Since you are a part of social media, what kind of fan feedback about “Eat&Drink&Smoke&Shop&Fuck (Kill Rock Stars)” that you have received has stood out to you?

A) Well, I think it is hard to release a song with the word “fuck” in the title these days, with the algorithms and other things working against anything they have labeled adult. Often queer content gets labeled as adult when it’s not, but this round it really probably was. It’s just interesting to have been shadowbanned on different platforms, have the song and video clips removed repeatedly, when really all I’m doing is dancing around with some masks on. Like…it’s not that deep. I think the feedback from people has been great, though. Everybody wants to eat and drink and smoke and shop and fuck right now, ya know?

Q) Which song on your upcoming LP New Money was your favorite to record and why?

A) I think the album closer, “Here’s to Us,” stands out because it was such a different tone than the others. It was the last one we recorded in the studio, and we spent a bunch of time doing vocals. Gino Mari kept telling me to sing it softer and softer and, ultimately, he was right.

Q) What was your process for deciding the order for how the songs would appear on the LP?

A) We moved things around a bunch. The only things I knew for sure was that track one was the opener and track nine was the closer. Everything in between felt movable, so we really did. I think in the end we just landed on this song order because of flow. I know people mostly listen to singles on these streaming platforms, but I hope people will give the vinyl a spin and also hear the songs together. It’s a party, for sure.

Q) The LP includes tributes to Liz Phair and Elliott Smith. What do these artists mean to you and why was it important for you to honor them?

A) Yeah, both of those artists mean a great deal to me and are each huge inspirations for my own songs. When I signed with Kill Rock Stars in 2020, it was a no-brainer that we would pay tribute to Elliott.

Q) What songs on New Money challenged you the most creatively?

A) Honestly, this record came easily this round. The only challenge was the pandemic, not being able to leave our houses, and just, like…fear is not totally conducive to creativity in my world. That being said, the lockdowns also provided the opportunity for me to really focus. I’m grateful for that part and only that part. The rest of the pandemic has been horrible, but this record and the process of making it, has not.

Q) Are there any plans to head out on tour or host some livestream events to promote the new LP?

A) Yeah! SXSW just announced the first round of showcasing artists for the 2022 festival in March and I’m one of them. We’ll be playing there and will be announcing a bunch more shows after the new year rolls around. Not playing live in 2021, though. All live things come after the record is out.

Q) What do you hope listeners take away from this new LP?

A) I hope it makes people shake it. I mostly want to inspire people to take their pants off.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of the music you make?

A) Thank you for being here! It has never meant more to me than it does right now.
