Q) 12 Stones is often described as “hard rock,” but how would you describe the band’s sound?
A) I would describe the band’s sound as emotionally aggressive. We put all of our energy into these songs from the day they are written and we try to find something positive to say in our songs
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) As far as musical influences, I can only speak for myself. My personal influences start way back with country music (early 90’s). Garth Brooks’ “The River” was the first song I remember connecting to on a deeper level. Then, my friend introduced me to grunge and metal and I never looked back. Silverchair is the band that really kickstarted my path to being in a band.
Q) “Golden Child” is your first new songs in six years. What brought you all back together to put out new music?
A) We started making music again after I had a health scare. We were all working “normal” jobs. I was working as a kitchen manager (60+ hours a week) and I didn’t want to waste away working for someone else. My guitar player Jon [Rodriguez] talked me into doing an acoustic tour and that’s all it took to get me ready to start making music again.
Q) Talk about the story behind creating “Golden Child.”
A) “Golden Child” is a song about how even the deepest of relationships can fade if not nurtured. Relationships of all kinds take effort from both sides.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think people relate to this song because it’s raw. I feel like most of our songs tell a relatable story.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
The video is performance based with no real story line, so it doesn’t really have a direct tie in per se.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) My songwriting process is usually very relaxed. Unfortunately, I write my “best” work when I’m in the darkest places mentally. Depression and anxiety tend to keep me in a place where I feel the need to share my struggles in hopes of helping even one person see through the darkness.
Q) With “Golden Child” out now, is this a prelude to a full album or EP?
A) I have enough material for two albums probably, so I hope to have a record out by the end of the year.
Q) The band is out on tour this Spring. What can fans expect from a live 12 Stones performance?
A) 12 Stones live is what it’s all about. We always try to deliver a high energy show every time we take the stage. We are very passionate about these songs and we would love to see you all at the shows.
Q) What 12 Stones songs do you still love performing live for fans?
A) I, honestly, still love playing most of the songs we play live. Each show is different and the crowd singing along makes me happy.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) As far as favorite places to play…..anywhere. We are grateful for EVERY opportunity to play our music and we treat every show of equal importance.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I love a good collab. I’d LOVE to do something with Mark Tremonti. He’s a beast at everything he does.
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A )I’m currently listening to a ton of Karnivool. They are next level when it comes to song arrangements and melody creation.
Q) Paul, I have to ask, as a Grammy winner for “Bring Me to Life” with Evanescence, where do you keep your award?
A) My Grammy is proudly displayed in my home studio.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I would like to say a sincere thank you to anyone that’s ever given us a listen. We know that we are only around as long as you allow us to be. As we continue to play shows and release music, we hope that you’ll continue on this journey with us. Please continue to support LIVE music. Showing up is the best way to support the bands you love. See you all on the road.
