Antania – The God Complex

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) We are highly original as we created a sound called “black” or “doom” bass. It’s a hybrid of black metal band bass music. We don’t use stringed instruments at all. Not that we don’t love guitars, it’s just not what Antania is about. We create blackened music by wrapping distortion around sub and saw bass.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Kali is highly into female fronted music. She loves Butcher Babies, Otep, Infected Rain and Jinger. Dr Luna listens to Lustmord, Deicide early Chemical Brothers, Prodigy and 80’s death metal in general. Antania is a merging of these sounds.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song ” The God Complex.” With Charles Manson at the center of the song, what made you decide to include the Manson girls chanting a mantra?

A) Neither one of us is that interested in Charles Manson, yet it was a goal to capture that era. We wanted the influence of that time.

Q) How did you, the band, come to team up with Matt Zane for the single?

A) Dr Luna used to get tattoos from their recently passed bass player DV Karloff. Matt is in a band called Society 1 and after meeting DV we would go to their shows. As soon as I heard he did Static X videos, we knew we would be working with in the future. Antania will be works with him in the future as well.

Q) The song “The God Complex” is unreleased and the only way to hear it is on YouTube. How did this concept come about? is it to entice listeners to tune in specifically to your page and leave them wanting more music for 2024?

A) We actually believed that we would attract a record label from releasing the video as “unreleased.” It’s worked, we attracted three record labels from its release and will be announcing who we chose to sign with soon. We have to create a fifty-minute release for the label by December 2023. Our next release will feature new material and some remastered versions of songs on “Lividity.”

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics? How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) Antania/Dr Luna writes, produces and masters all the music. Dr Luna starts with a bass line, then transforms that bass line into song. Lyrics come next. Both Kali and Dr Luna are involved in creating lyrics which most often are true crime stories mixed with the occult.

Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?

A) A full release with a brand-new label is coming. We were offered three records deals but one from a European label really stood out. It’s a combination of digital and physical CD’s and LP’s. Announcement soon!

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) We love playing Whisky a Go-Go. Dr Luna has a great relationship with them, so we often get great shows there. Yet sound wise, I love “Black Circle” in Indianapolis. They have the most compatible sound system for our style of music.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) We have collaborated with ERK from Hocico and Razakel already. It was such an honor to work with them both. Yet we would love to collaborate with a metal band and or an electronic act. The band Salem would be a great collaboration and so would the black metal band Possessed.

Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Kali constantly keeps Dr Luna updated with what is currently going on with the metal world. On tour she brought up the new Butcher Babies, Otep and Static X. Dr Luna tends to stay with the vintage black occult inspired bands like Deicide, Venom and Slayer.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) Instagram has been instrumental and helped us build fans and to let people know what they are up to. A band that is odd in genre is more than likely going to succeed because of the modern set up of music.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Thank you for being a fan to such an odd style music. We are definitely for those looking for something completely original. We are pretty new as we just came out in 2023 yet we have built a base pretty quick.
