Roman (Luke Mitchell) calls someone and tells them that he’s home, commenting that everything has led to this. Tasha Zapata (Audrey Esparza) wakes up in Edgar Reade’s (Rob Brown) bed, and accuses Reade of trying to sneak out. He tells her that he was planning to get breakfast, and gets a text that Patterson (Ashley Johnson) has figured out part of Roman’s video message clue. Zapata knows that he can’t talk to her about it anymore, and he wishes he could finish the case with everyone. She claims it’s for the best, and tells him she’ll see him later to sign the exit paperwork before they kiss.

Patterson tells the team that Roman is reciting a passage from The Count Of Monte Cristo in the video and Rich Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) tells him that he added words to the passage, and Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) identifies them as what three words. Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) repeatedly asks what the three words are, and Patterson explains that the words added are what, three, and words. Patterson suggests that the words are pointing to a method of mapping the world using 3×3 grids of words. Jane asks what three words make up the location Roman is pointing them towards, and Patterson tells Weller that what three words is not the answer.

Roman calls Hank Crawford (David Morse), and tells him that he knows that he blames him for the failed UN attack. Crawford tells him he blames him for the FBI’s investigation as well, but Roman tells him he brought that on himself. Crawford calls him out for betraying him, but Roman hangs up on him. Kira Evans (Gloria Reuben) tracks Roman’s location, and advises Crawford to turn himself in. However, Crawford is determined to silence Roman. Blake Crawford (Tori Anderson) asks about the news reporting the warrant out for Crawford’s arrest, but Crawford tells her he has a flight to catch. He explains that he has connections to help him escape, and rejects Blake’s request to stay and figure things out.

Rich tells Patterson that Crawford has borrowed a car that’s headed to the airport. Patterson alerts the others, and everyone gets into position. Weller and Reade drive in front of the car, but Jane gets a headache. They find Blake in the car, and Reade declares it a bait and switch. Weller asks where Jane is as she collapses on the ground. She regains consciousness as Weller arrives, and lies that her earpiece malfunctioned. Rich shows them that numbers imbedded in Jane’s tattoo’s lead to sections of a super-rare edition of The Count Of Monte Cristo. Patterson pulls Jane aside and asks what really happened, and she tells her about her collapse. Jane refuses to go to a doctor, believing she knows what the cause is.

Zapata signs her exit papers, and Reade tells her the papers don’t erase the good she’s done. He asks her what’s next, and she tells him that she has to deal with the CIA next. Zapata breaks up with him, telling him that it’s a bad time for them as Reade argues. She apologizes, and breaks down as she leaves. Reade tells the team that Blake’s lawyer has arrived, but Weller tells him that he doesn’t want her seeing the evidence they have against Crawford. He suggests telling Blake who Roman really is, but Jane argues it won’t work. Reade suggests they use Roman’s love for her, and Jane promises Blake that they will arrest and prosecute Crawford.

Kira tells them that Blake has no knowledge of Crawford’s dealings and that she won’t help them. Jane explains that they’re offering Tom a deal, but Blake insists he has nothing to do with this. Weller tells her they have proof, and that Crawford uses people. He tells her that she can still save Tom, and Blake tells them that she also wants assurance that she’ll have a chance to clear Crawford’s name. Kira argues with Blake, but she insists she’s protecting her family. Jane agrees to the terms, and Blake tells him that Crawford flew out of the country on a friend’s plane.

The team questions why Crawford would want to fly to Cape Town, South Africa, and Rich shows them that he recovered the rare edition of the book. He and Patterson figure that the puzzle points to South Africa, and Jane realizes that Roman is there as well. Kira calls Crawford and tells him the FBI knows about his flight, and advises him to turn himself in. Crawford insists on taking care of Roman first, and Roman enters and shoots a tranquilizer dart at him.

The team arrives in South Africa, and Reade introduces Jane to their liaison, Nelson Coatzee (Derek Roberts). Coatzee welcomes them, and Jane flashes back to Young Remi (Nicolette Debellis) and Young Roman (Lachlan O’Day) running through the land. In the car, Weller checks on Jane and she tells him about her collapse. She speculates that she’s pregnant, and he tells her it’s a good time to start a family after this is over. Rich complains that the team left him and Patterson back in New York, and Patterson gives them the location of the grid.

They pull up in front of an abandoned house, and Jane realizes that it’s her and Roman’s childhood home. Jane has flash backs as they walk inside, and notices an arrow engraved into the wall. They go upstairs, and Jane recognizes her bedroom. She has a flashback of younger Roman hiding things under a floorboard, and opens it to reveal a piece of paper stuffed in a gun. Jane sees it’s a family portrait, and realizes that Roman wants to take her to the beginning before they reach the end. Weller notices an engraving on the gun that Jane realizes is the name of a location.

Crawford wakes up to find himself tied to a chair, and Roman asks if he knows where he is. Roman tells him that this is the orphanage he and Jane were taken to, points a gun at Crawford and declares he’s going to kill the man who built it. Roman reveals that he’s not Tom, but Roman. He tells him that he came back after his family fell apart and discovered who was responsible for the orphanage, realizing that it was a trial for his big plan. Roman explains that he nearly abandoned his plans due to his love for Blake, but that Crawford’s love is transactional. Roman offers him a quick death in exchange for an explanation, asking if he knew the true nature of the orphanage. Crawford reveals that he knew everything.

Rich struggles with finding the location of the orphanage, and Patterson suggests that it might be in the US government’s records. She finds the location in a document, and Roman thanks Crawford for his honesty. Roman tells him that living here was a nightmare, and Crawford apologizes. Roman asks why he didn’t fix the orphanage, and Crawford explains that he had a mission. Crawford suggests that they aren’t that different, and suggests that they could build great things together. He calls Roman a son, but Roman orders him not to call him that and details his torture in the orphanage.

Roman sees the FBI pull up, and remarks that he didn’t think they’d be there so soon. Crawford tells Roman that he needs his help to escape the FBI. He insists that he’s dead either way, and Roman asks why he wants to help. Crawford explains that fate brought them together twice and that he knows his love for Blake is real. He suggests that Roman and Blake work together to make his vision a reality. Rich sees that Crawford has turned his phone on and works to track it. Patterson tells the team that Crawford is in the building and Coatzee is working with him. Coatzee shoots Weller, and Weller shoots him as he goes down.

Reade reports that Weller is down, and Jane runs to check on him. Weller tells her to stop Roman and Crawford, as this might be their only chance. She finds Crawford waiting in the room, and tells him he’s under arrest. Crawford refuses to drop the gun, but Jane tells him it’s over before asking where Roman is. He claims to not know who he is, and she reveals that he’s Tom, AKA her brother. Crawford is surprised, and Jane demands to know where Roman is. He tells her that Roman brought them here because they’re connected, and Jane shoots him as he lifts his gun. He reveals that the gun was empty due to one last transaction, declaring that he made something great. She sees Roman get into his car and shoots at him as he drives away.

Roman calls Blake and asks her to meet once she reveals that she’s in South Africa. Patterson tells Rich that Weller is stable, and Rich sees that Blake is in South Africa. They track the phone to give Jane the coordinates. Blake meets Roman on the top of a hill, and embraces him. She asks if Crawford is with him, and he informs her of his death. Roman is shocked when Blake addresses him as Roman, and she shoots him, telling him she knows everything. He asks her who told her, and she tells him she learned the truth from a trustworthy source. Roman asks if her love for him was real, but she tells him she can’t love someone she didn’t really know. She says goodbye and drives away.

Roman makes the phone call from the beginning as he bleeds out, telling the person on the other end that it’s time for them to hold up their end of the bargain. He tells him that the money is there, but has them promise that they’ll keep moving forward. Jane arrives and sees Roman’s condition. She asks who did this, and Roman apologizes. Jane apologizes as well, and Roman declares that he never escaped the orphanage. He gives her a flash drive, and admits that he’s scared of dying. She assures him that he has her, and that she loves him. Jane stays with him as he dies.

Back at headquarters, Jane asks Weller if he’s really okay. He assures her he is, and consoles her about Roman’s death. As they kiss, Patterson interrupts their moment to tell them there’s something they need to see. She asks Jane if she knows the password for the flash drive, telling her they have one shot to open it. Jane realizes that the arrow engraved at the house is a tree that points to the password to help her unlock the drive. They find Roman’s tattoo database, including ones they haven’t solved, and Patterson suggests that they can use it to solve all of the cases.

On a plane, Blake thanks Zapata for telling her the truth, and Zapata declares that they’re going to take the power back and change the world. As the team celebrates, Jane collapses. At the hospital, Weller gets a call from Patterson telling him to come to the lab. Patterson, Reade, and Rich tell Weller that Roman’s drive also shows evidence of research on zip poisoning. Reade tells Weller that Roman was trying to find a cure, and Patterson suggests that there are other drives around the world they can use to find all of his research and save Jane.

Jane wakes up in the hospital, and is alarmed by her FBI badge and the ring on her finger. She makes a call, identifying herself as Remi and believing that she’s still undercover with the FBI as she has no memory of the last few years. The doctor (Leah Curney) tells her that her husband has had a complication from his gunshot wound. She agrees to see him, and finds Patterson, Reade, and Rich standing at Weller’s bedside. Jane is confused about the situation, and flashes back to her telling Shepherd (Michelle Hurd) that she intends to destroy the team from the inside. Reade promises they’ll get through it together, but Jane smirks.
