Blindspot – The One Where Jane Visits an Old Friend

In the days following Madeline Burke’s (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) failed attempt to crash Air Force One, Madeline goes into hiding. Annabel (Natalie Jacobs) retrieves her recovered drive, but Madeline has Dominic Masters (Chaske Spencer) kill her when she finds out that Tasha Zapata (Audrey Esparza) was able to recover some of the data. The next day, Madeline has Dominic blackmail Weitz.

In the present, Zapata and Edgar Reade (Rob Brown) search Madeline’s office. Reade insists that there’s nothing left to find, but Zapata tells him he doesn’t know Madeline and begins breaking the floor tiles. Reade assures her that her efforts aren’t for nothing as they’re already starting to break down Madeline’s company. Zapata breaks the tile and finds a safe below.

Rich Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) interrupts Patterson (Ashley Johnson) to tell her that the jacket the mysterious hooded figure is wearing is sold by a restaurant chain. Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) checks on Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander), who admits she’s not ready to return to work yet as she’s paralyzed by Remi’s memories. He tells her she can’t hide from the memories and gives her a name of a therapist.

Zapata opens the safe to reveal nothing inside and tells Reade to get down as the office is shot at from a distance. They make their way out of the office and Zapata declares the bullets were intended for them. Jane talks to the therapist (Robert Emmet Lunney) about her issues, and he tells her that her and Remi’s emotions are conflicting. She asks what she should do, and he gives her a name of a cognitive specialist (Celina Dean).

Zapata shows the team the images of Madeline’s destroyed office and Patterson tracks the bullet to a building across the street. She shows security footage of a man climbing into the elevator with a case, identifying him as a member of the cartel working with Madeline. Rich points out that Boston Arliss Crab (Josh Dean) was also a part of stopping Madeline, and recommends they bring him in for protection. Patterson argues he just wants to see Boston, but Zapata agrees with Rich.

Jane tries to explain her situation to the specialist, but she is unable to follow the story. Patterson tells the team the cartel assassinated John Siracusa (Glen Raphael), and Zapata reports that another executive was also killed by the cartel, leading to the conclusion that Madeline is also a target. Patterson suggests that the cartel knew Zapata and Reade went to Madeline’s office because they were being followed and tells Rich to search the traffic cameras. Dominic tells Madeline about the murder of the executives, and suggests they move locations. Madeline refuses, suggesting the murders are a good thing.

Rich finds footage of a car following Zapata and Reade to the office but sees that it disappears in a tunnel. Boston arrives, unhappy to be back at the FBI, and shows them that another camera picks up the car on the other side. Rich tells Boston he should be glad they saved his life, but Boston tells him he was scoping art galleries when he was dragged away. Patterson tells them to stop arguing and finds that the car is parked in front of a hotel. Rich and Boston continue arguing, and Patterson points out that Rich is insulting Boston after he just arrived at his request.

Weller comes home and Jane tells him her experiences with the therapists didn’t go well. She tells him she needs someone who has experience with a case like her, but Weller tells her there’s no case like hers. Jane suggests there’s one person and meets with Dr. Robert Borden (Ukweli Roach) in prison, asking for his help.

Borden is in disbelief that she’s coming to him for therapy, but Jane tells him she has nowhere else to go. He tells her this is a bad idea, reminding her that his job was to keep her in the FBI. Jane tells him that he’s the only one who knows both Jane and Remi, telling him he’s her only option. Borden walks away from the table, but Jane tells him that neither of them are leaving until they talk. She pleads with him to listen, telling him he can leave after he hears what she has to say.

Casey Marco (Jeremy Shamos) is surprised to see Madeline but lets her and Dominic inside. Patterson thanks Boston for his help, and Boston is pleased to see that his paintings are selling. She tells Weller that the cartel assassin is maintaining his innocence in interrogation, and Weller declares they need to find concrete evidence.

Jane tells Borden about her situation, commenting that it feels like Remi’s thoughts are holding her hostage. He doesn’t answer, and Jane declares that this was a mistake. As she walks away, Borden comments that she talks about Remi like she’s a different person. Jane insists she is, but Borden tells her she did the things Remi did. He tells her to sit down so he can tell her the truth about Jane and Remi.

Weller tells the team that Jane went to see Borden for therapy. The team is surprised but say it’s okay if it helps Jane. Rich informs the team that three more executives have been murdered after they took the supposed assassin into custody.

Casey assures Madeline that the FBI hasn’t contacted him, but Madeline instructs him not to cut a deal when they do. Patterson shows the team that the data Zapata recovered from Madeline leads to a project called Helios with a list of the company’s executives. Zapata assumes that all of them were killed, and Weller deduces that Madeline must be behind the murders.

Weller questions if anyone on the list is still alive, and Patterson tells him the only one is Casey. Madeline thanks Casey for meeting with her, telling him she likes to do business face to face. Dominic strangles Casey and Madeline remarks that she saw too much fear in his eyes. Dominic asks what’s next, and Madeline declares that they’ll vanish.

The team examines Casey’s house, and Reade shows them a piece of paper with a phone number and the word “fuchsia” on it. Zapata identifies it as a pager, linking it to Madeline’s pilot JB Kelley (Mark Deklin). She explains that you have to page JB with the correct code and color, and they decide to use it to track Madeline.

Borden questions if Jane really believes she and Remi are two separate people, telling her the division between them is being used to deflect blame. Jane insists she came out of the bag with a clean slate, but Borden tells her it’s time to accept the truth. He tells her that it’s a narrative he fed to her, telling her their plan wouldn’t have worked otherwise. Jane throws her chair across the room, declaring she’s not Remi.

Borden tells her he recognizes the look on her face from when they met in Afghanistan. Jane flashes back to the memories as Borden tells her she’s the same person as she was then. He tells her he lost his wife because Remi came into town, and Jane apologizes for bringing her enemies into his life and ruining his life. She begs him to say something, and he asks if it’s better for her to talk about herself as one person.

Patterson briefs the team on JB, telling them that she can’t trace the pager. She asks Boston for help, but he admits he can’t. Zapata suggests they page JB and trace the number he calls back on, but Reade argues against it. Weller agrees with Zapata, and Boston gets notification that another of his paintings sold.

Patterson sees Rich on his phone, and she sees that he’s the one buying the paintings. Rich tells her he can explain, but she points out that Boston will be devastated when he finds out his sales aren’t real. Rich insists he’s trying to help Boston, arguing it’s the least he can do after everything. However, Patterson believes Rich will find an opportunity to rub it in Boston’s face.

Jane asks how she can ever become good, and Borden tells her not to view things in the prism of good and bad. He points out that both Remi and Jane sought to correct their view of injustice. Jane admits that she’s done so much she needs to atone for, and the thought paralyzes her. Borden reminds her of a story she told him about not being able to save everyone and advises her to focus on what she can save.

JB calls Zapata and she answers the phone after Patterson starts the trace. Zapata tells him that she and Madeline had a falling out, but they can still be friends. JB tells her that she won’t be able to find him despite the trace, and Zapata tells her he’s in danger. JB reminds her the cartel already tried to kill her, but Zapata reminds him that he was also at the cartel meeting.

JB insists Madeline will protect him, but Zapata asks what happens when he outlives his usefulness. She asks him to come in and help them, and he agrees on the condition they pay him ten million dollars. Reade insists the FBI can’t pay that, but Weller argues that the intel could be worth it. JB tells Zapata that he knows how Madeline is getting out of the country and Zapata agrees to the deal.

JB gives Weller his online account number, telling him he’ll talk once he gets the money. Weller replies they need the intel before they can authorize the transfer, but JB tells them they have an hour before Madeline leaves. Reade asks Zapata if they can trust him, and she replies he’s the best chance they have.

Rich begs Boston to stay, and Boston accuses Rich of being jealous he’s become successful away from him. Rich denies it, but Boston tells him that he’d be nothing without him. Rich takes offense, and Reade asks them to make a fake transfer into JB’s account. Rich points out that it’ll take the both of them, and Boston reluctantly agrees.

Borden argues that a lot of Jane’s issues are common, as a lot of people deal with family drama and PTSD and those can be treated. Jane remarks that it seems impossible, but Borden tells her she has the strength to overcome it. He tells her that her strength has been consistent throughout and advises her to think about how much her team needs her.

JB confirms the transfer and tells them that Madeline is leaving on his plane in fifty minutes. The team sets up a sting operation on the plane as Madeline assures Dominic that they can count on JB. An hour later, Zapata insists Madeline should have been there by now and JB assures her she’ll be there. Boston declares JB is lying and runs a test to confirm it. Zapata tells JB Madeline has arrived and can tell by his surprise that he’s lying. A flashback reveals JB calling Zapata with Madeline standing over him and complimenting his work.

Reade tells the team he’s grounded all aircraft, but Weller points out a couple of planes are still in the air. Patterson identifies them as emergency planes and determine that JB is flying Madeline out on one of them. They identify the plane based on JB’s flight history and determine the location. Jane arrives at the FBI declaring that she’s back, but Weller tells her that they’re going to take down Madeline right now.

Madeline waits on the roof of a hospital and Dominic tells her the FBI has arrived. She tells her people to take care of them. The FBI goes up the stairs, but Dominic shoots at them. Weller tells Jane and Zapata to find another way to the roof, and they dodge Dominic’s shots as they run down a hallway. Jane activates the MRI machine, which magnetically pulls Madeline’s men’s guns away as Jane fights them off and Zapata goes to the roof.

Zapata takes out the man standing next to Madeline, and the plane flies over them. Zapata chases Madeline cornering her in front of a locked door and telling her she’s under arrest. Boston declares he’s free again and Rich chases after him. Rich tells him he’s proud of him, and Boston comments that he didn’t realize Rich has so much empty wall space. Zapata brings Madeline down and Weller asks Jane where she is. Jane tells him she’ll meet him in the lobby, but Dominic tranquilizes her and drags her out of the hospital.
