Q) Jamal from “On The Block” is such a multidimensional and layered character. We see this neurotic, loyal, and determined guy showcased. How did you approach playing him and what resonated with you about this role?

A) I approached him how I would anyone I was playing, openly. I think the fact that he is so neurotic and determined is what resonated with me. You don’t see kids like Jamal all the time, especially in the neighborhood that he lives in.

Q) When reading the scripts what really stood out about the writing for the series and specifically with the dynamic dialogue and storyline for Jamal?

A) Jamal stood out immediately. He has the most fun storyline and such spontaneous dialogue. I loved it from the start!

Q) Netflix is known for pushing boundaries and this series is no different. With shows like “One Day At a Time,” “Everything Sucks” and “On My Block,” we are seeing so many diverse and inclusive storylines. With the current political landscape, why is it even more important to share these stories?

A) Sometimes the best way to touch someone’s heart, change or expand a paradigm is by telling a story. I think it’s not only the fact that we are representing a marginalized demographic, but also the fact that we are doing it through the landscape of a coming of age story of teens that gives us a fresh perspective on life in these times for those who are underprivileged.

Q) What was the most challenging aspect of filming the series?

A) The heat. Burbank is hot!

Q) What are some of the underlying themes of the series?

A) Definitely the power of friendship, we explore loyalty, gang violence and miscommunication (or lack thereof), among so many others. It really is a show everyone can find a piece of themselves in.

Q) The show has this incredible ability to tug at your heart strings then tear them to pieces the next moment. That ending tied me up in knots! When you read what was going to happen what were your thoughts?

A) I was like “aye Jamal secured the bag!” I’m totally on his side, they should have never given up!

Q) “On My Block” has quickly built up a famous fan base with Gabrielle Union, Jamie Foxx, Eva Longoria, etc. What has it meant to you seeing this outpouring that has come from the season from all fans?

A) It’s crazy! Justice Smith, who I have looked up to for so long, sent me a DM. It feels great to know others appreciate the work you do.

Q) What I love about “On My Block” is the balance of love, light, and lessons that this group goes through. No matter what they are there supporting each other. What is it about this type of friendship that we don’t often see in series that is so significant and what do you think it is about them that has resonated with fans?

A) I think the shock of the show is that this isn’t a “different” type of friendship. This is what friendship is like for everyone. I think the fans resonate with the lens, and the culture, but the stories are universal. We’re all much more similar than we think.

Q) What’s next for you while we wait for news on season two?

A) I’m dropping an EP in August. It’s called Easy Days and it’s seven songs. It’s a sort of sonic retelling of my first heartbreak.

Q) What do you hope fans take away from watching and what can they do to help with season two?

A) I hope they know they are seen and heard and they can spread the word. Tell friends, post about it! Any sign of support is greatly appreciated. Also, they can follow me on Instagram and Twitter at @iambrettgray.
