We are back at the 99 precinct. We immediately see Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) walking into Jake (Andy Samberg) and Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) having just invented a new way to high five and still be six feet apart because COVID exists in this NY universe. After asking Rosa what is the number one problem with it she makes a list: mass death, economic collapse and the way the disease has exposed the systemic injustice at the core of American life. Then, she drops a bomb – she just turned in her resignation and quit the force, causing Jake to high five Terry´s (Terry Crews) face, crashing into Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) and setting a printer on fire.

The gang is now hanging out at Shaw´s. Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) is informing us that Amy (Melissa Fumero) was on maternity leave longer than expected because of the pandemic. Terry says Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) retired the very first second he could, but is still there on Facetime. Boyle being Boyle is trying to be more aware of race issues and Rosa has become a PI to help victims of police brutality. She makes it to the bar and tells Jake that one of her clients was assaulted by two officers in the 74. He knows the Captain there and thinks she can help him.

Back at the 99 Amy is stressed because Captain Holt asked her how her lunch was, making small talk, which he never does – especially not with friends. As he says, small talk is for strangers and con men. So, she asks Terry for his sex book, which is definitely Scully´s. Jake and Rosa meet with her client Aisha Fulton (Shawntay Dalon) and confirms that she was only arrested because some officers like to do that at the end of their shift so they can work later and get extra overtime. They go to Captain Lamazar (Rebecca Wisocky) who apparently she reviewed the case and wants to help, but there is no proof. Rosa guesses the body cam footage got mysteriously corrupted. The Captain seems to genuinely want to help and even gives them the name and address of a rookie; however, they never get to her because instead they get Frank O´Sullivan (John C. McGinley) head of The Patrolmen´s Union.

Amy is trying to connect with Holt and he agrees just so she can go back to work. Rosa thinks O´Sullivan saw the body cam footage because of some details he said were not on the police report and no one else is jumping to help cops at the moment. Boyle gives Terry $10,000 as a way to apologize for everything he had to go through, but it was a mistake as he meant $100.

Rosa asks Scully for help to break into O´Sullivan´s office, but when she´s inside he comes back and is almost caught. Jake shows up and distracts him so she can get out with the footage. They take it to Captain Lamazar, but she deletes it and turns out to be just as bad as the two officers that assaulted Aisha! So, sadly, nothing can be done. At least the charges were dropped.

A favorite moment from this season´s premiere happens when Captain Holt opens up to Amy and tells her that he only tried the small talk because not everything´s okay with him as he and Kevin are separated. It´s been a tough year to be a black man and a police Captain and a human. No one else knows yet as Amy is the only one that noticed something was off the very first day she was back. Jake and Rosa also have a heart to heart. He´s starting to understand where she´s coming from and apologizes. She reminds him that they´re still family even thought their choices are not the same.
