Cavo – Come Undone

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) We have never held ourselves to a certain standard of what we should sound like. The intention is to let any idea breathe and have a chance. There’s never a point where one of us say “that doesn’t sound like us.” From “Champagne” to songs like “Stay” and “Take Me Home” there’s a clear gap. We really just try to put out the best music that we can with all of our different influences.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) I used to ride around w/ my mom dropping my brothers at baseball practices, and really wherever and we used to listen to old country like George Jones, George Strait, The Judds and I really fell in love with the simplicity of four chords, a great melody and a great story. As I got older, I was really into the grunge era where dynamics were huge. I think the moment for me was when I first heard Pearl Jam. I was so intrigued by his voice and how intense he was. I knew that’s what I wanted to do with my life. I really admire bands like Blue October who constantly put out honest music. Justin’s lyrics are so real, he never holds anything back. I find inspiration the most in my family, my wife and kids. They are always pushing me to be a better man, father, husband and, in turn, musician.

Q) What is it about the Duran Duran single “Come Undone” that makes it a favorite Cavo cover song?

A) Honestly, when we first started playing it in practice years ago, it just felt good! We talked about the song a few times, but it wasn’t until we played it that we knew WE loved it. I think that’s really important for the fans hearing you do a cover of someone else’s song. You have to love the song to expect other people to react to it.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) It was such a big song for Duran Duran and I think it was a bit different sounding for the band. It has a dark edge to it that leans towards rock music. It just seemed natural to add the big guitars and the fans reacted to that. The bottom line is that a great song is great on guitar, piano or any instrument.

Q) How did you come to feature Shannon Nicole on the track?

A) Shannon was working with our manager at the time. Scott from Modern Day Zero and I came in to write with them around the same time we were going to record Come Undone. I’m pretty sure it was Scott’s idea, but after hearing how talented she was, it was obvious. She really brought everything we were looking for to the song. There’s this sense of rawness in her performance that really blew us away.

Q) Talk about working with J.T. Ibanez on the video.

A) We have been working with J.T. for a while now and we have always been amazed at what he captures from us. Honestly, a lot of the times filming is a bit underwhelming, we always feel like we can do better, but we have such faith and trust in J.T. that when he tells us he has what he needs we believe him. The end product always comes out amazing, he’s just such a super talented guy!

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) There is never a way set in stone. Sometimes we’ll have a small acoustic idea and bring it to practice or a demo worked up with production, but my favorite way to write is to get into a room with my band and just start jamming. That’s how everything started years ago, and it still feels great. I love feeding off the music and seeing what emotion and melody the music brings out of me. Everyone in this band  is great at what they do, but there’s just something about us 4 being in a room together that makes us  all better.

Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) We are the band that is always there! We love being there from the first idea to final mix. We’ve also been really blessed to work with producers who respect that. We all have ideas, but at the end of the day we trust the producer we are working with. We think it’s really important to have a role to play and once the songs are written we are ok w/ leaning on the producer to create his vision.

Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?

A) We are actually working on things right now for 2021 and 2022. Don’t want to give away too much, but there will be new Cavo music so stay tuned for more information!!
