DC’s Stargirl – Summer School: Chapter Twelve

We open with Buddy the Dugan-Whitmore’s dog. It seems like he’s been left unattended for too long because he’s eating everything in sight and tearing stuff apart. Pat (Luke Wilson), Barbara (Amy Smart), Courtney (Brec Bassinger) and Charles McNider (Alex Collins) walk in and are surprised at the damage we flashback to four hours earlier.

Beth (Anjelika Washington) and Jennie (Ysa Penarejo) are surveying the high school cafeteria. Jennie comments on what a mess it is and Beth has to explain about the JSA vs ISA battle that happened a week ago. It makes Jennie realize she’s been pretty out of the loop. And the action hasn’t stopped. Beth gets a call from Dr. McNider and excitedly tells Jennie that Courtney’s back and she’s’ not alone. And she gets a pleasant surprise in the form of the staff zooming up to her. She notes that the staff is finally feeling better.

When they get home Pat gives Dr. McNider a change of clothes and tries to apologize to him for not knowing he was alive all this time. But Dr. McNider doesn’t let him get the apology out because it’s not necessary. He makes it clear that he knows there was no way of knowing where was, so there was nothing to be angry about.

Courtney and Barbara are hugging and Cindy (Meg DeLacy) is watching uncomfortably, probably due to the visions of her own mother she’s seen recently. After the “I love you’s” Courtney warns Cindy not to try anything and reminds her that this whole mess with Eclipso is her fault. Very, very reluctantly Cindy admits that bringing Eclipso back from the island might’ve been a mistake. Courtney says that’s an understatement. Then, Jennie and Beth arrive at the Whitmore-Dugan house and get to witness and then participate in a mostly tearful reunion.  Beth’s happy that Courtney’s okay, but not so thrilled that Cindy’s there because of Cindy’s role in Eclipso being in town. Courtney explains the current cease-fire.

Onto more pressing concerns, Dr. McNider tells Pat that they have Eclipso at a disadvantage. He doesn’t have a diamond or a host at the moment so he can be destroyed by people who wield light. Pat admits he’s not sure that the kids are ready yet, but Dr. McNider says he knows for sure that Beth is. Speaking of that, it’s time for the two Dr. Mid-Nite’s to meet.

In addition to being glad to have Courtney back, Beth is thrilled to finally meet the man behind the voice. Dr. McNider is also happy to meet Beth. And Beth offers to give the goggles back, but with Eclipso still on the loose Dr. McNider tells her she should hold onto them. Besides, he was his own pair in his incognito glasses. He adds that he thinks they can combine their goggles to find Eclipso and that Beth can call him Chuck.

Barbara watches fondly as the Dr. Mid-Nites bond and Courtney wants to talk to her. At first Barbara assumes she’s still upset about the secrets she and Pat kept from her, but Courtney says she’s over it. She tells Barbara that she doesn’t want there to be anything unsaid between them and tells her about the version of her she saw in the shadowland. The version that regretted ever having her.  Barbara tries to reassure her that she doesn’t feel that way. But it must’ve been so hard to raise her alone, Courtney says. Barbara admits being a single mother wasn’t always easy, but she says she made her choices and loves Courtney. And she assures Courtney that she’s gotten to do many of the things she wanted to do, even if it wasn’t always in the way she originally thought she’d do it. Now that that’s settled, Barbara asks Pat where Mike (Trae Romano) is. He says she’s off chasing lightning.

It’s not the weather variety. He’s walking through town and sees a giant cheeseburger in the middle of the sidewalk. There have been reports that giant snacks dropping from the sky has been a theme today. He follows the trail until he finally bumps into Jakeem (Alkoya Brunson) and he ultimately realizes that Jakeem’s the new owner of the Thunderbolt. He asks him what gives with the flying fast food, but Jakeem explains he just wanted a snack and maybe wasn’t specific enough. He doesn’t even have the Thunderbolt on his person because he said he wanted Chinese food and it probably went to China. Mike says they have a lot to talk about.

Courtney goes to the church to find Yolanda (Yvette Monreal), who still doesn’t want to talk to her. Yolanda tries to leave but Courtney blurts out that she’s not the only JSA member who has killed someone. Unfortunately, that doesn’t provide the solace she hopes it will. When Yolanda took on the Wildcat mantle she read all about Ted Grant and he killed someone too. Now, she says the suit just belongs to two killers. Meanwhile, Cindy is lurking in the shadows watching the conflict.

Knowing they’re going to need all hands on deck, Pat goes to the hospital to try and convince Rick’s uncle to drop the charges. Unfortunately, Matt Harris doesn’t have better angels to appeal to. Not that Pat doesn’t try to convince him that Rick’s a good kid and didn’t mean to hurt him. But he gets a note from Matt (who can’t speak out loud) to show for it, which makes Pat angry. He angrily reminds Matt that his sister (Ashley Winfrey) and her husband trusted him. They asked him to take care of Rick when they couldn’t, but all he’s done is hurt him. However, Pat says people like Matt have no problem taking advantage of people more vulnerable than them, be that a child or a waitress. He locks the door and says that in the army and growing up he knew exactly how to deal with the Matts of the world and then he shuts the blinds and we cut away.

Yolanda’s in her room and is shocked to turn around and see Cindy there. She says she heard her talking to Courtney and she thinks it for the best that she’s not getting involved. Cindy says they’ve got enough on their hands without adding a weak link to the mix. Yolanda’s skeptical that Courtney would work with her after everything she’s done. But Cindy explains that for the moment they’re united in their hatred for Eclipso. And she says that before Yolanda wasn’t so weak she almost admired her but not anymore. And adding injury to all the insults she’s hurled at her Cindy tells Yolanda that she’s the one that shared the sexts at the assembly. Yolanda’s livid, but any bloodshed is avoided when Yolanda’s mother asks what’s with all the commotion. And then Cindy ducks out the window.

Mike and Jakeem go back to Jakeem’s house and talk. Mike explains how he briefly had and lost the pen and tries to say it’s a lot of responsibility. But he’s not totally convinced that he should have it anymore. Jakeem is relieved because he’s not just enjoying the wishes and admits to Mike that the Thunderbolt is the first friend he’s had in a long time. The talk is interrupted by Jakeem’s sister who says it’s Jakeem’s turn to do the dishes. Unfortunately, this can’t wait and Jakeem requests Mike’s assistance.

We’ll probably never get the gorey details, but Pat convinced Matt to drop the charges. This means that Rick is released and Pat’s there to give him a ride. Rick asks Pat why Matt changed his mind, but Pat pleads ignorance. Meanwhile, Jennie has been sleeping through a lot of the commotion. Using the ring took a lot out of her. But despite not being awake, she’s not exactly getting rest. She’s having some pretty bad dreams where she sees Bruce (Milo Stein).

Yolanda storms into the basement to talk to Courtney. She confirms she’s working with Cindy but it’s only to defeat Eclipso. Yolanda hates that for obvious reasons but asks for her suit back. She decides to help them defeat Eclipso and protect them from Cindy, but then she’s done being Wildcat. After that conversation Courtney confronts Cindy and figures out that she riled Yolanda up on purpose. Cindy doesn’t deny it and says that sometimes you’ve got to get your hands dirty.

Rick is working on rebuilding his father’s hourglass. Jennie continues to have nightmares. Jakeem and Mike are doing the dishes. Cindy makes a mysterious phone call where she tells someone “they” need to come back to Blue Valley. Beth and Dr. McNider decided they’ll work faster with the JSA mainframe so they head to the American Dream. But before they get to the computer they’re stopped by Bruce. Beth warns him that they’ve got back-up, but the Bruce version of Eclipso says that’s good. He’ll need everyone to bring out the darkness in Courtney.

We cut away to Jennie’s nightmare. The entire team is dead in the streets and there’s destruction everywhere. Bruce’s voice says that he’ll be a God soon.  The camera pans up and we see Courtney but she’s possessed by Eclipso. Jennie wakes up and is terrified.
