Emily Hackett – My Version Of A Love Song

Q) What inspired your track “My Version of a Love Song?”

A) I always liked the idea of a love song, but it never felt genuine when I tried to write one, so I never really tried. It was basically my first attempt at doing so, so it’s a little awkward but it’s mine.

Q) What was special about the song to you that made you decide it was going to be the title for the EP?

A) The fact that it was imperfect, but it was honest. That ultimately encapsulated every song on the record.

Q) When you think of other love songs what do you think makes this your, or as you say, “My Version of a Love Song?”

A) I’m explaining myself, maybe overexplaining myself, because my actions don’t always express what I’m actually feeling. Like maybe I can’t find the right words of affirmation, so my good-intended emotion comes out in some level of frustration. The point is, it’s still coming from a loving place.

Q) One of the best things you mentioned in a press release is you noticed a pattern in some of your favorite songs you’ve written when creating “My Version of a Love Song.” What can you tell us about this pattern?

A) It’s like a coming to terms with my shortcomings. Instead of trying to hide it, I just say it and hope that the honesty is understood – that the listener can have some empathy.

Q) “My Version of a Love Song” ties into an EP that really endeavors through different emotions, even contradictions like “Handle” and “How The Hell?” What was the emotional journey like of venting through the music on the album? –

A) Just that–an emotional journey. Marriage shows you a lot about yourself and it’s not always something you want to see, but you can’t hate yourself for it. You just take note and try to grow. Writing these songs was a wild ride but having them during 2020 was such a beautiful reminder.

Q) You pour your heart and soul into your lyrics, why is that so essential to the songwriting process for you?

A) For my own sanity. Mental health is just about trying to understand why you are feeling the way you are. It’s an open journal without all the boring details.

Q) What was the most difficult part of creating this EP?

A) Not recording all the songs at one time. I think that made it a unique experience and left us with production that felt different on each song, but it was definitely a challenge working virtually between Nashville and LA and making sure timelines stayed together. I’m proud of my team.

Q) What’s your favorite song on this album?

A) Right now, it’s “Handle” because that was a bit of a Pandora’s box of a song for me, in the best way. Though, when live music finally comes back, I have a feeling I’m really gonna fall in love with playing “Can’t Help Myself” with the full band. If it feels that good listening to it, I can’t wait to play it.

Q) What did YOU take away from creating the EP?

A) I make the best music when I’m being most myself.

Q) What do you hope that listeners take away from the EP?

A) Your feelings are valid. Speak your truths.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song?

A) Harry freaking Styles

Q) What would you like to say to fans and supporters of you and your music?

A) From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I write it for me, but I sing it for you.
