Interviews
Emily Perry – So Bad
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My music is a blend of pop and dance. I started as a dancer, so I always like to integrate a dope beat into my music. I think music is all about passion and my goal is to make people feel something. I want them to be able to vibe out and relate lyrically when listening to my music.
As an artist, I would describe myself as current, relatable and fun and most of all, I want my music to grow with me.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I think all the producers and writers I work with are definitely a big influence. They bring the lyrics, the words and the song to life and help me create and tell the story that I want to tell.
New, upcoming artists constantly inspire me. That’s what I am and to know that it’s possible for “a nobody” to become “a somebody” is so empowering.
Artists that make a difference/make a statement are for sure an influence. Music is such a powerful thing. Some people rely on it to get through their day and their ups and downs. Your music can make someone feel something that they really need to feel in a certain situation. It can make them feel better. It can make them feel understood. It can make them feel loved. And that’s a pretty beautiful thing.
I think my top 3 influences – musically and performance wise – would be Camila Cabello, Anne Marie and Normani.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Jingle Jingle.”
A) “Jingle Jingle” is my very first Christmas release! It dropped in December and I’m so grateful for the response it has been getting!
“Jingle Jingle” was one of my favorite group projects! The idea was the brainchild of my co-writer Cindy Valentine. While we were in Denver for my Pride Week performances, we teamed up with local producer Jeff Warnock to lay everything down in his studio.
Although we were all in love with the track, we felt it needed a little something extra to really create a fun holiday anthem with an underlying pop/dance flavor. We brought in one of our favorite producers, Niko The Kid, who spiced up the track to deliver what is now “Jingle Jingle.”
Q) The song was featured in the recent Hallmark film Homegrown Christmas. How does that make you feel?
A) It felt incredible! Getting a track placed in film/TV is a nod from your industry peers, it shows that your song has a universal appeal and certainly helps to spread your music to new audiences.
Plus, it was so much fun watching the film on TV for the first time and hearing my song!
Q) You also have the track “So Bad” out. What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I instantly fell in love with the track when I heard it. It really fit my musical style and I was just so excited to lay it down and perform it! I’m so thankful for the reception “So Bad” has been getting! I just performed it as part of my set on a five-week high school tour down the East Coast of North America, which was incredible! It also has over 260,000 streams on Spotify!
Not only do I think people can relate to the storyline, but I personally love the energy in the track itself. It literally makes me want to get up and hardcore dance it out, in the rain, in the middle of the street.
I have some visuals and a music video for “So Bad” dropping very soon so watch for that!
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Generally, I like to create to tracks. I think having a melodic base there is a great help, especially when working in groups which is my favorite way to work on a record.
You can’t always do it alone. There’s so many possible ideas that could bring something special to the song that you may not think of but somebody else in the group might. However, when writing by myself, I love to start with the lyrics. I have song journals full of ideas that I write down daily. I can’t wait to explore more of them in the new year.
Q) What can fans expect from a live Emily Perry performance?
A) You can expect a whole lot of fun! Most of the time I have my dancers with me and there’s always a little something for everyone to vibe out to.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) I already have some singles lined up for the new year and I’m sure an album isn’t too far in the future.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) Chicago – I love the people and their energy!
Maryland – Super hype!
Texas – Performing in Texas, at various high schools for a week was craaaazy fun!
Australia – Australia will always have a special place in my heart.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) There are so many great artists, writers and producers that I would love to work with! Too many to name, but if I had to throw out some names it would be Justin Tranter, M-Phazes and Julia Michaels.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Billie Eilish – So young yet so individual, plus her visuals are FIREEE!
Anne Marie – She has a really cool sound and such a dope stage presence that I really admire! Julia Michaels – One of my absolute favorite writers!
Jessie Reyez – One of the coolest sounding voices I’ve ever heard!
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I love that my music is able to connect me with people all over the world. And I love that I’m able to interact with all my supporters through social media.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you so much to all of you! I wouldn’t be the artist I am if it wasn’t for your support. You are one of the reasons I make music and I can’t wait to create and share more music with you all soon.
I have a lot more music and various projects ready to release in 2019 so stay keen for that! You can keep up with everything I’m doing on my social media (@TheEmilyPerry) and on my website (www.TheEmilyPerry.com).
