Q) As an indie artist, how would you describe your sound?
A) Very guitar-driven. Energetic. Youthful. Vulnerable.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) We’re really influenced by bands like The Stone Roses, Talulah Gosh, Bratmobile and Sleater-Kinney.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “You & Me.” What do you think fans connect to about the song? How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) “You & Me” was inspired by seeing two of my friends loving, looking out for each other and existing in a world that refuses to acknowledge their existence. Their friendship reminded me of my own personal female friendships and I wanted to express my strong desire to protect them from any harm in the song.
Q) Your record Online 24/7 is out now. My favorite tracks are “O, My Love” and “Lap Dog.” Is there one of these three songs that holds a special place in your heart for a certain reason?
A) “O, My Love” really holds a special place in my heart. It was quite a difficult song for me to write and sing because the topic deals with issues like gender-based violence and how it can physically and psychologically affect someone.
Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) We’d usually go back and forth between each other. Either Edo would come up with the music first and then I’d complete it with the vocals and lyrics or vice versa. It really depends on who has what first.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) We’re very much hands on with the production of our music since day one. We’ve only started working with a producer for Honey, Baby in 2020 and another one for our debut album Spunky! in 2022, and even during these two cases, we were still very hands on.
Q) We’ll see you play three shows at SXSW in March and then go on your Clocking In the End of the World Tour. What can fans expect from a live Grrrl Gang performance?
A) Expect to have lots of fun!!
Q) What songs off this record are you looking forward to performing live?
A) We’re most looking forward to performing “Lapdog” live for US audiences, especially since we’re going to perform it as a four-piece band for the first time.
Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to your new EP as a whole?
A) We hope our listeners can really see how much we’ve grown and how much we care from this new release.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) We don’t really have specific locations, but we’ve always enjoyed (and preferred) performing in small, intimate venues because it’s a lot easier to interact with the audience.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) We’ve never really had anyone in mind because the band is crowded enough already 🤣 but if we could, I’d like to have Madonna sing a verse or two.
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listening to Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” a lot lately! It’s such a hauntingly beautiful song.
Q) What advice would you give to other artists starting out independently in the music industry?
A) Stick to what you believe in. Have as much fun as you can. Don’t listen to anyone’s opinions or take them too seriously. Believe in your art.
